Nice homestand for Arizona, Pennell

Make that seven in a row for Arizona.

And is Russ Pennell going to be the Pac-10 Coach of the Year?

Mike Montgomery (California) and Lorenzo Romar (Washington) can certainly make a case, as could Herb Sendek (Arizona State). But as long as the Wildcats don't collapse down the stretch it's looking more and more like Pennell deserves the award, particularly following Saturday's 84-72 thrashing of UCLA.

It's incredible -- as I detailed in Thursday's column -- the way Pennell has been able to inherit a bad situation, take some early lumps and still position Arizona for a 25th consecutive NCAA tournament. The Wildcats have gone from 11-8 (2-5 in the Pac-10) to 18-8 (8-5 in the Pac-10) in a matter of roughly three weeks, and even if they lose every remaining road game (at Arizona State, Washington State and Washington) they'll still finish with a winning record in the Pac-10 as long as they don't take a home loss to California or Stanford.

Translation: This is going to work out OK.

That's my prediction.

And though it probably won't land Pennell the Arizona job on a fulltime basis -- athletic director Jim Livengood is aiming much higher, according to everything I've been told -- what it should do is let Wildcat fans enjoy this season that seemed destined to be a debacle before it even started. Then when it's all over and done, Pennell will get to listen to other schools that will almost certainly be interested in his services, because he'll possess the type of coaching credentials that can't be ignored, plus a Pac-10 Coach of the Year award to boot.

In no way is sweeping Cal and Stanford a given. Any one that thinks so would be a fool. It is however difficult to look past how well Zona has played at home this year and the way they have been playing of late. The rest of the season should be quite interesting.

Can't wait to see the basketball powerhouse that Arizona State will have next year when they lose Harden to the nba and Pendergraph to graduation.

Awwww, poor lil zona hater...who are you really?  A Zags fan, Jayhawk, Trojan, Bruin....one of the many 'weak' teams that we have dismissed this year.   And so what, last year we got in on the bubble...after playing ourselves convincingly in the previous 23 years.  Fact is Arizona is a basketball powerhouse and has remained strong even in off years!  Unlike many other top tier teams who have disappeared for a few years when they rebuild, the Cats have managed to compete year in, year out.  Yes, there were some early exits (just like Duke the last few years!) but there were final fours, elite eights, sweet sixteens, and a National Championship to boot!   Zona can play with anyone this year.  I agree with the earlier poster...return to your dark little hole.

i created a profile just to spout bile, you are correct...i dont often post on sites like this, i have a life...now that the kamikaze kid hurt my feelings and zona hater so clearly proved that ASU has a better basketball program than UA by researching every team in division 1's record i am going to crawl back into my hole, i will never post again, you sure proved me wrong by pointing out that UA backed in last year, but just remember that they backed into the NCAA tourny, not the NIT like ASU...see, this is what happens when you build a power program like UA has, you get the benefit of the doubt, and teams like ASU, who were pretty good last year and probably deserving, get overlooked because their program has been garbage historically, give it about a decade more of winning and then you will be on the same level as UA......i hope everyone enjoys watching the most overrated team in the country go to their 25th straight tournament while ASU goes to their.....oh wait......i forgot, the best basketball program in the state of Arizona has not been to back to back tournaments during UA's streak.... Cry   anyway, it is way past my bedtime, sweet dreams ladies

Be careful what you wish for johnny-baby. You and I both know it will be a great game, and I am sure bothe coaches will have their team prepared. There is no reason at all for UW fans to diss UA, unless it is just in the spirit of a rivalry.

Exactly what I was thinking Kamikaze. Should maybe look at the numbers of last years team a little more carefully.
