Your new No. 1: Pitt (and it's not debatable)

Pittsburgh, you may now proceed to the top of the national rankings.

That's the end result of a wild Saturday on which No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 3 North Carolina both lost (to unranked Texas and unranked Maryland), clearing the way for the Panthers -- who beat top-ranked Connecticut last Monday -- to rise to the top of the Top 25 (and one) late Sunday night, then the AP and Coaches polls on Monday. It's the only logical move, so much so that I imagine Pitt will get all 72 first-place votes in the AP poll and all 31 in the Coaches poll. Anything short of that will be proof that somebody with a vote isn't paying attention, and if such a person presents himself (or herself), that person will be Poll Attacked on Monday afternoon.

Here's all you need to know:

  • Pitt is 25-2 overall.
  • Nobody has more wins or fewer losses.
  • Pitt has compiled this record against a schedule rated 12th nationally.
  • Pitt has six wins against the top 25 of CBSSports.com's RPI rankings.
  • Nobody else has more than four.
  • Both of Pitt's losses came on the road.
  • The losses were to the schools ranked seventh (Louisville) and 12th (Villanova) in the latest AP poll.

So to summarize, the Panthers have more good wins (i.e., wins against the top 25 of CBSSports.com's RPI rankings) than anybody, just as few losses as the other elite teams, and no bad losses (like Oklahoma's loss to Arkansas, North Carolina's loss to Boston College, Connecticut's loss to Georgetown, etc.).

Best I can tell, that makes Jamie Dixon's team the easy No. 1.

Any other opinion is a faulty opinion.

doesnt it really matter at this point in the season. aslong as you win your conference, or stay in the top5-6 your almost secured a no1 -2 seed so being ranked no1 overall in the poll is nice but not worth the hoopla. Since the start of 09 the no1 team has been upsetted and been a musical chair game between the bigeast and acc. so yeah let pitt be ranked no1 they still have to go thru what ever left of their bigeast schedule and fend of OU team and possible a unc team which like i said earlier the no1 spot has been a big big bulleyes this year. not really worth the trouble

Let's see.  Pitt beat the previous #1 and was ranked #4.  The 2nd and 3rd ranked teams lost.  Great deductive research Mr. Parrish Pitt should be #1 next week.  I think everyone knew that and thanks for giving Pitt it's recognition it deserves.  I hope they show their strength in the tourney which they haven't the past 8 years.  I was actually very impressed with Oklahoma playing as well as they did without Blake Griffin most of the game.  The tourney is going to be a crapshoot this year.  No clear cut favorites.  Pitt and Oklahoma depend on 1 player too much so that refs or injuries would change the outcome.  UConn lost a key player to injury.  UNC is the most talented but perhaps not the best team.  I think at least 16 teams have a chance this year.  Let's hope Pitt plays the same in the tourney as they do during the regular season.

Pitt is it!  The only thing that can beat Pitt is a whistle.  I have seen every game and that is all thats standing in Pitt's way.

For the first time, I agree totally with you, they will get all first place votes, there were quite a few cup cake games mixed in, and I'm sure this latest win against Depaul was a tough one.........lol.

I give Pitt their due, but truly think they are a "elight eight" team at best, in the end.......

Gary,

I 100% agree with you.  There's no question that Pitt should be #1.  But that number means nothing.  Pitt needs to continue playing hard nosed basketball, if they get caught in the #1 mindset, they will be upset.

Gary,

You need to have a word with Doug Gottlieb on ESPN. It seemed like he was trying to make a case for Oklahoma to be number 1 even though they lost. LOL

what a douchebag

Jay Will keeps laughing at him...its classic
