Griffin still waiting to be cleared

Posted on: February 25, 2009 11:14 pm

Blake Griffin met with doctors again Wednesday and even shot a little, but the Oklahoma star still has not been cleared to return to contact drills or live action, OU coach Jeff Capel told CBSSports.com late Wednesday night.

"Right now we still have no clue (if he'll play Saturday against Texas Tech)," Capel said by phone. "It takes time, and we're not going to do anything to rush it. We want him to be OK before he plays again or before we even put him in a position to practice with us again."

Griffin suffered a concussion in the first half of Saturday's loss at Texas, then missed Monday's loss at Kansas that dropped the Sooners' record to 25-3 overall, 11-2 in the Big 12. The 6-foot-10 sophomore is the overwhelming favorite to be the National Player of the Year and top pick in June's NBA Draft, but for now he's still sidelined with lingering effects from a freak mishap.

"He's getting better," Capel said. "But it's a slow process, and we don't want to speed it up."

Griffin still waiting to be cleared

The guy easily takes 2 to 3 times as much punishment in the paint thany any other player in college basketball!! There has already been to players suspended this year for cheap shots on Blake. Everytime the guy catches the ball 2 sometimes 3 defenders collapse on him.
I read what you're typing but he's not the only one who draws 3 defenders or get's whacked a lot. May I present Hansbrough to your conversation? He's been whacked, triple teamed, and blooded for 4 years now. I'm not comparing the two, but nobody has taken as much punishment the last three years than Hans. That guys a tank and he's dent proof.

Yes, I saw the other minor bumps to his poor wittle head. I mean gimmie a mother freakin break. NONE OF THEM were that hard. NONE. I dont buy it.
No one's asking you to buy anything.

There's a lot of things that could cause a tough guy to go goofy.  Or just die.

Remember John Gunn?

Griffin still waiting to be cleared

This is just another testament to how worthless the regular season is in college basketball. OK knows that they need Griffin for the tourney, so they hold him out if there is any chance whatsoever that he might have anything even resembling a concussion, and hold him out as long as it takes. If this were football, Griffin wouldn't have even stayed out of the TX game, just put a breathe right strip across the bridge of his nose and headed back out.

If you looked at some earlier highlights, he took a forearm to the side of the head and a hand to the top of the head as someone missed blocking a shot, either of which could have caused a concussion.

Griffin still waiting to be cleared

When he got hit in the face, that just made his nose start bleeding, so they finally pulled him out.  If you looked at some earlier highlights, he took a forearm to the side of the head and a hand to the top of the head as someone missed blocking a shot, either of which could have caused a concussion.  The other thing about a concussion is that sometimes it takes several hours even to notice it's affects, so he easily could have gotten the concussion, not realized it, and then they only noticed it because they were tending to his bloody nose.

Give the medical staff a break, it's not like they are trying to sabotage Oklahoma's chances, and I think Griffin would be out on the floor unless he really had a serious or potentially serious issue.

Griffin still waiting to be cleared

Its clear neither of you had had the chance to watch the BEST player in the country play much this year. The guy easily takes 2 to 3 times as much punishment in the paint thany any other player in college basketball!! There has already been to players suspended this year for cheap shots on Blake. Everytime the guy catches the ball 2 sometimes 3 defenders collapse on him. When your averaging alomost 14 rebounds a game you dont think this guy takes some beating crashing boards? He averages over 35min a game a lot for any player almost unheard of for a guy his size, and your calling this guy weak? Its still unclear that the graze across the face from dexter Pitman is what actually caused the concussion, prior to that Blake took a hard hit on a offensive charge that started the game. On top of that a couple min. later Blake also took a shot to the chin that was unshown, i'm not saying it a flagrant shot those things just happen at this level of play. But to call the BEST player in College Basketball that is 6'10 250+, weak or uncapable of being physical is ludicrious!!!

Halo, gonna have to agree with you. He get's brushed across the face, quote 'get's a concussion', then sits on the bench looking like a zombie.

Good thing he's not a boxer or in MMA.Wink

AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT FINDS THIS RIDICULOUS?

Gimmie a break. He barely got touched. I dont even believe he ever had a concussion.
