Memphis lands another McDonald's All-American

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- McDonald's All-American DeMarcus Cousins committed to Memphis on Sunday, less than 24 hours after visiting campus and watching the Tigers beat Tulane at FedExForum.

Scout.com ranks the 6-foot-11 center from Alabama as the sixth-best prospect in the Class of 2009. Considering Memphis already signed Xavier Henry (Scout.com's fourth-best prospect in the class), this development gives the Tigers a pair of McDonald's All-Americans in a five-player class that could now rank as the best in the nation.

And it might get even better.

The only top five prospect remaining on the board is point guard John Wall.

Industry sources have long considered Memphis among the leaders to land him, as well, despite the fact that Baylor has already hired one of Wall's AAU coaches. A roster featuring Wall, Henry and Cousins, plus the other newcomers (top 50 recruit Nolan Dennis and junior college stars Darnell Dodson and Will Coleman), plus veterans Doneal Mack, Wesley Witherspoon and Roburt Sallie would make Memphis a favorite to win the 2010 national title even if Tyreke Evans and Shawn Taggart leave after this season, as expected.

Cousins' commitment means 18 of Scout.com's top 20 are now off the board.

Here's an updated look at Scout.com's top 20 prospects with their college situation in parenthesis:

1. Derrick Favors (committed to Georgia Tech )

2. John Wall (uncommitted)

3. John Henson (committed to North Carolina )

4. Xavier Henry (committed to Memphis )

5. Renardo Sidney (committed to Southern California )

6. DeMarcus Cousins (committed to Memphis )

7. Lance Stephenson (uncommitted)

8. Kenny Boynton (committed to Florida )

9. Abdul Gaddy (committed to Washington )

10. Avery Bradley (committed to Texas )

11. Ryan Kelly (committed to Duke )

12.  Daniel Orton (committed to Kentucky )

13. Jordan Hamilton (committed to Texas )

14. Alex Oriakhi (committed to Connecticut )

15. Dominic Cheek (committed to Villanova )

16. Wally Judge (committed to Kansas State )

17. Dante Taylor (committed to Pittsburgh )

18. Dexter Strickland (committed to North Carolina )

Hruska - I didn't mean Memphis is undeserving of the tournament, but aren't you sick of the well their record is inflated by the C-USA argument?

Not sure, even, if you know what your saying.

Many teams have one and done players.  I agree with you we are guilty.  Recently, Memphis has had at least one a year.  But, wouldn't you leave if you were picked in top ten(or, #1 like Rose?)

Also, we would of loved to of left CUSA but were not asked.  Our FB program is making strides, but still struggles vs. strong programs(that's why we were excluded, I think.)

There is alot of mid-level ballers in CUSA, but to say top tier players coming to Memphis do themselves a disadvantage? (When did your program produce a #1 pick, or top 10?)  That's crazy, and your comment " Memphis to start earning their tourney bids?"  leaves me speechless.  Have you watched the tournament the last 5 years?

Personally, I haven't seen to many teams make the championship game that did not deserve to be there.

Memphis lands another McDonald's All-American

Memphis is like a side show. Recruit one and done players and keep the ball moving through their best current combo guard. The talent provides for some exciting tournament games, but do any of these fans feel a real connection with these players? The worst part is, these players go against mid level talent in the C-USA when they would be doing themselves a HUGE favor by going to a major 6 conference. Memphis needs to join the SEC already, I mean Marquette and Louisville got out of C-USA when they had the chance, now is the time for Memphis to start earning their tourney bids.

You are absolutely right.  Memphis wouldn't have gone 28-3 in the SEC.  They probably would've finished 27-4 because the SEC is sooooooo much better the CUSA.  Please!

Davisbacks, when you have a first class coach and facilities to practice and play in you don't have to go deep in anyone's pocket for top talent. Unlike other teams west of the Mississippi and east of the Great Plains south of the Missouri and north of the bayou.  Gee from another post , wonder if Memphis would be replacing that team in the SEC.Laughing

With what Memphis has returning and who all are coming in I just see one problem. Minutes in the game. There will not be enough.

Most teams would love to have Memphis's bench as starters. With all the competition for time these guys will be so improved over what they are now there is not telling how far they can go.

Can you say Pre-season #1?

And if John wall comes too, wow no one will want to play us. Well so much for being asked to join another conference again.  Who can blame them, they just don't want there rear ends kicked. Cool
