The NCAA tournament won't feature Stephen Curry

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Remember those long jumpers against Georgetown?

The runners against Wisconsin?

That smile?

Man, those were good times Stephen Curry provided last March.

And if you planned for similar ones this March, well, your plans are now shot, because -- as hard as it might be to swallow -- Davidson will not be in the NCAA tournament thanks to Sunday's 59-52 loss to the College of Charleston in the Southern Conference tournament. The Wildcats are 26-7 and nowhere near the bubble thanks to a 69 RPI and 1-4 record against the top 100. Consequently, March Madness won't feature the All-American whom some have called the face of college basketball , and it really is too bad for everybody ... except for the folks who run the NIT.

And Charleston, of course.

The NCAA tournament won't feature Stephen Curry

It's true, there has been little talk of how important Jason Richards was to Davidson last season. But I think it's clear that now that Curry has to run the point, he's not nearly as effective of a player. He scores a lot, and gets a lot of assists, but he also makes a lot of poor decisions at the point and turns the ball over quite a bit. Davidson needs a floor general to allow Curry to slide to the wing where he is cold-blooded and deadly. He cannot be that same player this season because he has too much responsibility on offense. They wouldn't be as entertaining to watch anyhow. And, as a Hoyas fan, there's a little schadenfreude going on over here.

Let's give someone else a chance to shine, like Kenny Hasbrouck or Mendez-Valdez. There are a bunch of great players from small schools out there, and someone will write another excellent story this tournament. I, for one, was disappointed that VMI didn't get in, simply because their chaotic, insanely-paced brand of basketball is a nightmare for purists but so, so entertaining to watch

The NCAA tournament won't feature Stephen Curry

Aw geez...c'mon!  There are at least 3.500 other Division I men's basketball players.  Not having Curry in the tournament isn't the end of the world.  In fact, I think it's fair to say that if Davidson had managed to get in, you wouldn't see the same awesome Cinderella run you saw last year...because the team is not as good...which is why they're not in it!  See how that works, Gary?  One man doesn't make a team.  But, if the media really insists on ignoring the importance of the whole TEAM by seeking out a single player to be the tournament darling, I think it's just fine that someone else has the opportunity to be that person for a change.

Haha... I should've read on!  I see I'm not the only one who noticed this contradiction of logic.

He's so overrated. Take him away from Davidson and they have nothing.

So which is it?  Curry's overrated or Davidson's overrated?

Just by saying Davidson has nothing without him you are saying he's pretty damn good.  I think it's a shame we won't get to see him (or, very likely, my boy Jack McClinton) in the tourney, but they just don't have the resume to warrant an invite.

I am one of those folks that do not think like Billy Packer. I think that there are alot of good teams around. What did you guys think that the rest of the Southern Conference was going to do. Davidson just raised the bar a little for the rest of the Southern Conference. Davidson might not be as good as UNC or Duke. But when you look at the other bubble teams from the majors they look a little better. The truth is that the whole Southern Conference is better. Maybe the Southern Conference has not earned 5 or 6 teams like the big east, big ten, or the ACC. 2 teams might be fair.

Why doesn't Davidson pull a "St. Mary's" and go schedule to play someone else before Selection Sunday?  Maybe they could play Creighton?

The NCAA tournament won't feature Stephen Curry

How can a guy be overrated if you make the argument that if you take him away from his team, "they have nothing"?

Apparently you were in a coma during last year's NCAA tourney when Curry was making play after play after play.
