Am I missing something with Wisconsin?

Posted on: March 14, 2009 2:24 pm

Nearly everybody in the business of projecting brackets has Wisconsin as a "lock".

Why is that?

Here's Wisconsin's body of work ...

Overall record: 17-12
RPI: 44
Record vs. top 50: 4-10
Record vs. top 100: 9-11
Losses outside top 100: 1

Now look at this body of work ...

Overall record: 26-7
RPI: 41
Record vs. top 50: 2-2
Record vs. top 100: 9-5
Losses outside top 100: 2

Now let me ask: Which body of work looks better?

The mystery team, right?

That mystery team is Creighton , a school that is either one of the last teams in or on the wrong side of the bubble of most bracket projections. Which is fine, I guess. That's not my point. My point is that it's difficult to understand why Wisconsin is a "lock" to make the NCAA tournament while Creighton is on the bubble when it appears the Bluejays actually have a better profile.

Am I missing something with Wisconsin?

And Wisconsin? Overrated? Please. We just had back-to-back 30+ win seasons.

and then they tottally vindicated that regular season "success" with a strong showing in the NCAA's right?

Beating the girl scouts of The Big Ten and the non-con pushovers 30 times doesn't mean your high ranking is warranted.  Until a team backs it up in March it makes you overrated.  And Bo Ryan has never backed it up at the D-1 level.

Neither team should be in but Creighton should not even have a chance.  If you only played 4 top 50 RPI teams all year why should you be going to the NCAA tournament with a 26-7 record?  When you only played 4 teams in the RPI top 50 and split those games and have 7 total losses then give me a break.  Do you really think Creighton makes it to the Big Dance if they played in the Big East this season?  7 losses is not very good when you have not played good teams.  I really don't care about top 100 RPI record because a team could beat a ton of those and still not be one of the best 65 teams in the country.  Even take a ranked team like Butler and I bet they don't make the NCAA tournament if they were in the Big East.  I believe they would be fighting it out with Georgetown, Notre Dame, Providence, and Cinncinati for those 8-11 spots in the Big East and believe they would go 2-2 against those 4 teams if they played them all.  Yet Butler is a top 25 team, REALLY!!!  The mid majors can win games in the NCAA tournament but that proves nothing because so could a team like Georgetown or Notre Dame.  Any team can get hot at the right time and win some games if they have some good shooting nights and that has been proven in the BCS tournaments were most of the better teams did not make it very far.  Mid majors get too much benefit of the doubt in my opinion.  You want to rate them fairly just pretend they played in the Big East and tell me were they finish.  Don't give me 1 game examples either because beating one team does not mean your better than them, look at Georgetown who beat Memphis, Connecticut, Villanova, Syracuse, and Maryland who are all going to the NCAA Tournament and most as high seeds.  So spare me the my team beat this team crap and talk about the whole body of work, 2-2 against RPI top 50 tells me you did not play enough tough competition to deserve a bid.

Wisconsin is ranked #31 by Sagarin, finished 1 game out of second place in the Big Ten and, according to Sagarin, played the 11th toughest  schedule in the country.  Creighton's record against Sagarin's Top 50?  0-0.

Am I missing something with Wisconsin?

Like someone said earlier I think its all about the Name and tradition.  God I hope its not about $ and the TV numbers.  I would find it interesting to see the numbers from last year Last 4 out vs Kentucky. They had to make it on name alone their record certianly didn't stack up. If anyone has those numbers and could post here that would be great. I would love to see.

Memphis should be a lock for a #1 seed and most likely in the South. Just because Memphis makes it look easy to dominate the CUSA does not mean they have a terrible conference. Okay, I'll give you the fact that CUSA is not the best, nor are they the worst. But Tulsa is actually a pretty good team. I'd put them up against any #2 conference winner out there.

Honestly CUSA is getting better each year and the fact remains that Memphis is bringing them along. Even Calipari stated he was sad to see Tulsa not get into the field, because they have a great program and a good team. This Memphis team is better than last year's team that lost in OT to take the number 2 slot overall. I'd be willing to bet they have a good chance this year of taking it all.

You cannot deny those 135 wins in 4 years. The most in history. Nor can you deny 4 straight years as CUSA champions. Nor can you deny the # 2 slot last year. Nor can you deny 3 straight elite 8's. What more must Memphis do to earn your respect? Ask North Carolina who they want to play least.

They answer to that was given in an interview this morning on CBS...Memphis. I rest my case.

Am I missing something with Wisconsin?

Uhh, Wisconsin AND Michigan State got through to the Sweet 16 last year, you idiot. Get your facts straight.

And Wisconsin? Overrated? Please. We just had back-to-back 30+ win seasons.

You really have no idea what you're talking about.

You're missing two wins, SOS, and a sweep of both Michigan and Penn State. They are not a lock. They're a 10-11 seed.

Wisconsin success, however modest it may be, does always seems to draw critics out of the woodwork (see Roy Williams 2 seed departure and subsequent comments regarding WI/Bennett's final four appearance) . You could make the same arguement regarding a dozen schools. But since UW is above the Mason-Dixon line, your question will ring sweetly to the ears of your belle choir (save Alabama).

Careful who you grind, karma could send the NCAA to Memphis.
