GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Ty Lawson isn't expected to play in North Carolina's NCAA tournament opener.

"There's a huge, huge probability he will not play," coach Roy Williams said here Wednesday afternoon.

Lawson missed the ACC tournament with what is being described as a jammed or sprained big right toe. He said he went through about half of practice Wednesday morning, but it seems Williams either did not see what he wanted or does not think it's worth rushing Lawson back for Radford, because the odds of the ACC Player of the Year competing Thursday are unofficially slim-to-none.

If Lawson is out, Bobby Frasor will start in his place.

The Tar Heels are 1-1 without Lawson this season, 27-3 with him.

"If I don't play Thursday, I'm sure I'll be ready by Saturday," Lawson said. "When it comes down to it, I'm going to play."

Doesn't matter if he comes back. UNC will lose because they have the most overrated coach in NCAA history. Look at how many #1 seeds have been wasted under this guys watch.

Definitely no need to play Lawson in Round 1, so it's a smart move by Williams.  If there's any doubt about the foot for Saturday's game, I would have him ready to come in case things aren't going well; otherwise, put him in for a short spell and see how he does.  And keep it short.  No need having him causing greater injury in a game where he probably won't be needed.

My guess, though, is he's in the starting line-up on Saturday because the foot will be doing fairly well.  Not 100%, but go enough to go.

the only problem with unc's pgs is that one doesn't play defense and one can't play offense

Which one doesn't play d? The one that was second in the acc in steals with 2 a game? Maybe you were talking about Drew.

You really think one of those 2 teams that love to run have a chance of making it all the way to play Carolina? You do realize they would have to meet in the Final Four right? Probably not. Thanks for adding your two cents. It was worth it.

Its all good! We don't need lawson for the first round because we're still going to win by 30 plus regardless.. However the second round is a different story. I personally think we drew the toughest 8-9 seed matchup between lsu-butler.. Both of those teams are still ranked in the top 25. I think we could still win against either of those teams without lawson but my confidence is through the roof if he is playin.. That team just doesn't look the same with bobby running the point! Either way it looks like its gonna be a great tournament. Can't wait!

Ty LAWSON

UNC could be in trouble if he has a nagging injury

Its tough to win a Championship when your best player isnt up to snuff health wise

Yes He is UNC's best player......not the other  guy

Rest assured Lou_Hunter, they will find a way to make everyone unhappy.  They'll show you four games at once and then settle on the one that interests you least.  Sorry, I just miss the way it used to be when early rounds were on ESPN and ESPN2.

With Lawson, UNC wins by 40, Without him they'll still win by 25. Radford doesn't stand a chance.
