Lawson likely out vs. Radford, Williams says

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Ty Lawson isn't expected to play in North Carolina's NCAA tournament opener.

"There's a huge, huge probability he will not play," coach Roy Williams said here Wednesday afternoon.

Lawson missed the ACC tournament with what is being described as a jammed or sprained big right toe. He said he went through about half of practice Wednesday morning, but it seems Williams either did not see what he wanted or does not think it's worth rushing Lawson back for Radford, because the odds of the ACC Player of the Year competing Thursday are unofficially slim-to-none.

If Lawson is out, Bobby Frasor will start in his place.

The Tar Heels are 1-1 without Lawson this season, 27-3 with him.

"If I don't play Thursday, I'm sure I'll be ready by Saturday," Lawson said. "When it comes down to it, I'm going to play."

Lawson likely out vs. Radford, Williams says

A lot of people are trying to make this into a huge deal because thats what the media does, its their job. I'm not saying that this is not a little troubling, especially with all of the other injuries that Carolina has and with the very high expectations going into the tournament. But look, Lawson will sit in tomorrow's game, the other guys will get a good chance to get tournament experience, and Carolina will still win the game by more than 20. Even if Lawson dresses but is unable to play against the Butler/LSU winner, the Tarheels have Bobby Frasor who is an experienced point guard that started as a freshmen for the entire season. The entire team with the exception of Danny Green played outstanding against FSU (who is 10x better than LSU and Butler) and with only a couple made layups from Green (that he missed along with all other shots), Carolina would have put that FSU team away. The good news is this, Hansbrough showed why he's the big man on campus, Ed Davis showed why he's going to average a double double for the rest of his career, Ellington is shooting lights out at the right time, Deon Thompson was nursing a sprained ankle in the acc tournament and only played 21 minutes, but that is healthy now, and Tyler Zeller had his most productive game (4 pts and 2 rebs in 4 minutes) since returning late this season. This team is the only favorite out of the bunch that has final four experience and a hall of fame coach. Lawson WILL play when we need him in games 3-4-5-6, and the Tarheels will be cutting down the nets in Detroit

Carolina is ranked in the 200s when it comes to points allowed, but they're ranked in the top 5 in points scored and possessions per game.  What you did is took one stat and looked at it out of context.  More important than points allowed per game would be defensive efficiency, the Tar Heels rank second in that category.

I agree with most everything else you pooloo2 but your reasoning behind saying Carolina has a poor defense is unfounded.

First it's Tar Heels... two words.

Second the reason you want Lawson back for the Radford game isn't because you're worried about winning or losing in the opening round.  It's because Lawson will not have played at a tempo even resembling game speed for nearly two weeks if and when the Heels play on Saturday.  It's all about conditioning.

I think it is smart for them to not play Lawson regardless of if he says he's ready. You never want to underestimate an oponent, but I think it can be safely said that North Carolina should have no problem with Radford without him. It is crucial that Lawson be available later on in the tournament so that UNC can get inside penetration. Much better to play it safe now so they have him later.

There is absolutely no question that UNC doesn't need Ty during the opening weekend

What? I hope you meant opening game, because they will most certainly need him on saturday whether they play Butler or LSU. Either of those teams could beat UNC WITH Lawson. Simply because UNC's defense can't stop any team from putting up points....

UNC will NEED Lawson on saturday...thats what there's no question about!

Does it really matter? The Tarhels are ready to roll thru the first round.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...hold on now...Let's make one thing very clear. RADFORD is a good basketball team. They have a very high octane offense and UNC has a very mediocre defense(ranked in the 200s in points allowed per game). Radford's weakness all season has been turnovers and UNC has a knack for creating turnovers. But Ty LAwson was a big part of UNC creating TO's, so with him out, Radford has at least a chance to keep the turnovers low and if Radford can keep the turnovers under 10 they have a legitimate shot at being the firs 16 ever to win a game, because UNC's defense will not be able to hold them down for the whole game or probably even large portions of it.

Go ahead, think I'm crazy, but if you watch the game and the turnovers are low for Radford, it WILL be a close game. Within 15 points. And if Radford is within 15 with 7 minutes or so to go, they have a chance to knock down some threes while UNC thinks they have it won and pull the shocking upset.

96-0? Has the tourney been 96 years or am I missing something?

Gotta love that coming from a fellow Jayhawk fan.  I've got to say though, that Lawson does have mad skills.  But, I agree that he is overrated.  But what would the ACC if it wasn't overrated.  Granted you can understand this because nearly every sports announcer/writer is an ACC grad, but still!!  Look at "Psycho T" I hate that stupid bloody nose and people think he's god!!  So he was "unstoppable" last year.  Until he played against a team that had REAL big men.  Man, even a skinny freshman named Cole Aldrich ate him for lunch.  I really hope that UNC stays in the tourny long enough to play Oklahoma.  I would put Griffin at 35 pts/22 boards and I would guess "Psycho T" to end up with 12 pts/7 reb.  If UNC played in the Big 12, they would still be a great team, but I guarantee you that "Psycho T" would only be in the middle of the big man group.
