Alabama gets permission to speak with VCU's Grant

Posted on: March 23, 2009 8:59 pm

Anthony Grant might finally be on the move.

The VCU coach who was on the verge of replacing Billy Donovan at Florida two years ago has been granted permission to speak with Alabama about its opening, the Ricmond Times-Dispatch reported Monday. A source told CBSSports.com that Grant is expected to meet with Alabama soon, which could serve as a precursor to his exit from VCU after three seasons and two NCAA tournament appearances.

Alabama is searching for a replacement for Mark Gottfried.

He was forced to resign in January.

Alabama gets permission to speak with VCU's Grant

WHOOOOOAAAAA there Xerc! Let's not go coping and attitude and getting all personal.

If you check the message boards, I believe you will see I have created threads and responded as well, every bit as "active" as you have been.

Don't know where you live, but you might want to check the Bama BBall boards on al.com as well:

Don't recall seeing your name on there.

As to the other, you might want to read my post again. Dyslexic? My comment about Shula and Gottfried was meant that those from OTHER schools kept talking about what good coaches they were and how we shouldn't be making a change.

To the money angle, it took about 11000 empty seats to get MM to make a move. My position has been to spend the money, the right hire will pay for itself with "lifeblood" breathed into the program and 15,316 screaming fans in the seats.

My comment on LSU. I was at the LSU game in Tuscaloosa - and all the other ones this year as well.

Were you there?

I didn't see anything impressive about LSU. Yes they made the dance - and were quite impressive when they got there.

But LSU as a program has been the most underachieving program in the SEC. Two of the best players in the history of the game - Maravich and Shaq - I saw both of them at Coleman. How many SEC championships and NC's have they won.

I'm just saying, AG or Anderson could come in here, regain and hopefully surpass what C.M. and Wimp did.

That's my standards. What's yours???

Roll Tide.

Alabama gets permission to speak with VCU's Grant

I can understand the posts that wonder why Grant would come to Alabama, or that he should wait for the Florida job.

Same folks who thought Gottfried and Shula were doing a great job for Bama.

Why Bama?

$

15000 seat arena - 10000 season tickets sold with a coach everyone was ready to see leave.

A decent nucleus of returning talent with a great soph to be in Green.

A wide open western division. LSU? get real.

A football program that wants to support the BB team. Hey, they're on ESPN everyday during the season - Bballers watch that stuff too.

Why not Gators?-

He'll compete head on with KY (w/Donovan?) & UT (even though they may be fading)

How does he compete with Donovan's legacy and gator expectations? Win 3 championships?

Unlike football, there is no recruiting advantage in florida. Donovan recruits everywhere.

Roll Tide!

This is great. I've been waiting for Gottfried's exit for so long, and now to possibly get this guy would be a steal for us. I like Mike Anderson but I think Grant is the guy. He can recruit, he knows the x's and o's of basketball and he is young. Please don't screw this up Mal Moore.

Surely there's a better job out there for Grant than Alabama.  No offense to the Tide fans and SEC homers,  but the only thing that would be more appealing about Alabama is the money.  Granted, VCU is hardly the mecca of basketball, but they're winning more than Alabama right now.  You kind of have to feel sorry for the guy...if Donovan doesn't waffle two years ago, he gets the reins to a team fresh off a second consecutive nation championship, now he's a candidate for Alabama?

It is time for Grant to step up to the next level, but is Alabama really where you would want to make that step?

...and to the ECU fans...why on earth would he leave VCU for confines of Minges Coliseum?  I know coaching VCU isn't exactly like driving a Ferrari now, but going from VCU to ECU would be like trading in a Corvette for a Yugo.

Alabama gets permission to speak with VCU's Grant

I'm not sure what he would gain by going to Alabama, besides being in a much bigger conference that looks pretty wide open at the moment.

A much bigger conference would mean a much bigger salary and, in your own words, the conference is "pretty wide open" at this moment.  And your questioning why he would consider going to Alabama because "that's all" the job has going for it?

That's sort of like saying you don't understand why your friend is interesting in a paricular girl.  Other than she's really good-looking, has a killer body, a good personalilty and isn't going out with anyone right now, you can't figure out what he sees in her.
