There's a big gap between Donovan and Ford

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- With Billy Donovan out of the picture , Kentucky must now turn elsewhere.

Tom Izzo?

That would be excellent.

John Calipari?

That would be tremendous.

But I'm less sure about Travis Ford, and I like Travis Ford. He was great at Oklahoma State this season; that school is lucky to have him. But the reality is that Ford has coached nine Division I seasons at three different schools and been to just two NCAA tournaments, which doesn't suggest he's guaranteed to succeed anywhere, much less somewhere like Kentucky. He might . Or he could miss the NCAA tournament three straight years like he did at UMass. It's hard to tell, and that's my point.

Mitch Barnhart should be less interested in gambling on a UK graduate -- which some are reporting is possible -- than securing a guaranteed home run like Izzo or Calipari or Jay Wright or any number of guys. Some day, Ford might be in that class. But he's not there now, and that should make Barnhart hesitant, because if he completes another questionable hire that goes bad then the next UK press conference might not be to announce a new coach in two years, but a new athletic director with a better track record of success.

I think Horn should be the next coach.#1 he is a Lexington native #2 he is yound and can flat out coach. #3 he took a western ky team to the sweet 16 and by the way with a lot of the same players western ky about got back there again! He flat out coached Billy G in the 2 games with South Carolina this year.Just take off Western as part of the name and you still have Kentucky blue blood.Wake up Mitch you have an outstanding young energized Lexington Kid that can flat out coach mingle with media and Kentucky fans that would adore him!!!!Even I could make this smart hire

Forget the homerun, how about a grand slam? The most intriguing suggestion is Pitino leaving Louisville and going back to Kentucky... The people who resented him going to Louisville would get over it quickly.  Louisville would hate him... but what if they win the title this year how could they give him grief.  Probably the best coach in the country.  Louisville was pathetic until he took over and they were instantly contenders.

Laugh and say impossible if you want but it is interesting that Pitino has not even been suggested in the Lexington papers.  They listed the top 16 possibilities and he was not one.  They have not started setting up interviews or contacting schools for permission to talk to anyone.  Don't be surprised if they make a pitch to Pitino... but not until Louisville is done playing.  Which might be a while.

Calipari or anyone that is a name wont take that job. Noone wants to be in Ricky Pitino's shawdow. UK should just take a chance on Ford. He is a Kentucky guy and can get it done. He can recruit and can do what Billy G couldnt do... kiss the boosters asses

There's a big gap between Donovan and Ford

Donovan is not going to UK; Anthony Grant is heading to Alabama & he was waiting to see what Billy D was going to do on the Florida position; he is staying so Grant is going to Alabama.. It is Travis Ford by default, because no one else wants the job, UnecK is not the kingdom it once was.

Donovan would be a great choice and I agree that Ford has yet to prove himself.  But with little interest from Donovan, I believe that Jay Wright is the guy we need to go after!

There's a big gap between Donovan and Ford

You're right on with this post.  Calipari has a huge contract (over $2.3 million guranteed with incentives), his teams have a style of play that makes it easy to recruit elite talent to Memphis, dominate CUSA and get a high seed in the Tournament every year.  If he stays at Memphis for several more years, he has the opportunity to win a national championship and build a progrma that will be solid for a long time (the same thing Denny Crum did at Louisville, Boeheim at Syracuse etc).  He's got the number one recruiting class coming in next year and has a real chance to win a national championship in the next 2-3 years.  Kentucky looks tempting because of the "tradition" but in reality, theres only downside.  It'll be several years before UK is in contention for a National Championship, and even if you win it, its just expected.  If you don't win one, you're immediately on the hot seat again. As you point out, Cal rules Memphis and the city loves him.

And just to address all this CUSA bashing out there, i think i speak for all Tigers fans when i say we'd love to move to a better conference.  We wanetd to go to the Big East, but they took South Florida and Depaul instead, so it was obviously about television contracts, not the quality of the basketball.  I'm sure the long term plan is for Memphis to get to a better conference, and the more successful the basketball program, the better chance we have.  Memphis will do whatever it needs to to keep Coach Cal.  You can expect an extension and raise announcement in the next couple of weeks.

I'm not criticizing OK State because I do like the team.  But exactly what has Ford accomplished that makes him worthy of the UK job?  I didn't like the Gilispie hire, either.  Travis Ford has just ONE tournament win.  Just one...and that makes him qualified to coach UK?  I'd like to see Ford stay in one place for more than a minute and maybe establish himself somewhere for a while.  Show that he can win consistently and even make it beyond the first round.   I'm not hating on Ford.  I like the guy and I know he can coach but he's NOT ready for UK and neither was Gilispie.

There's a big gap between Donovan and Ford

Travis Ford has all of ONE ncaa tournament win...just one.  And by the way, Ford's team is back home watching the tournament on TV.

May I remind you that just two seasons after Duke won the championship in '92, they had a LOSING season.  So, I guess that makes Mike Krzyzewski a bad coach too?
