Floyd staying at USC; Memphis misses on Pearl

DETROIT -- Tim Floyd will remain at Southern California despite an offer from Arizona and heavy interest from Memphis, sources told CBSSports.com on Thursday.

An official announcement is expected soon.

It's unclear what's next for Arizona.

However, multiple sources told CBSSports.com that Memphis was interested in pursuing Bruce Pearl up until the moment the Tennessee coach agreed to an extension with UT on Thursday night. That's a moot point now, obviously. So Memphis will keep looking for John Calipari's replacement with three ideal candidates -- Mike Anderson (Missouri), Floyd (USC) and Pearl (UT) -- already off the board.

Tell me why this is crazy or if I'm ignorant as to why this is not possible......Pat Summit as the new U of M coach?

Interesting. I didn't hear Floyd or Arizona say he was even offered the job. He just said that he talked with them and has decided to remain at USC. To this point Floyd is the only candidate Arizona has even spoken with. To my knowledge no other school has indicated that Arizona has asked permission to speak to thier coach.

its nice to see a coach actually be loyal to his players and his school.  it seems as if today every coach is constantly leaving rather
than build a program themselves

I hope Arizona gets Few, but not sure if he'd want to walk into a program that may be facing penalties soon. Floyd has been a good recruiter, but U of A recruits just fine with its name. Few is a good COACH, which would be a positive for the Wildcats.

So Calipari got mentioned on the basketball map to the extent that they can offer an SEC coach twice as much money than he makes? Pearl would be great for Memphis - not as good of a recruiter as Calipari, but he would get the fans behind the program with the antics.

Not good news, but at least UT will have to pay him more thanks to Memphis.

I think Pearl would be interested in Memphis. Sure, a big pay raise helps but lets face it: Tennessee is not only a school where football is king, but women's basketball is as well. Who knows, given how Arizona's search has gone thus far, he may be a candidate there too.

I don't know if he's willing to entertain the idea of jumping ship but the coach for Memphis to go after should be Ken McDonald of Western Kentucky.  If not McDonald, then I would target Jeff Jones at American.  Both of these coaches have spend the last two to three years building from nothing and done a pretty good job of it.  It's time for them to take another step up.

Ummm...perhaps you're right about Jeff Jones, but Ken McDonald has only been the Head Coach of WKU for ONE season. After their Sweet 16 run last year, their head coach jumped. He's a good coach as evident by their play this year, but he's still a work-in-progress.

Memphis and Arizona are better off going after talented assistants on high major teams. It's a lot easier to lure a talented assistant than to steal another head coach (especially for Memphis) since most head coaches don't want to take a step down in conference.

Arizona is in a slightly better position because of their tradition and location. They are in a hot recruiting area and any good recruiting coach can bring them back quickly.

Why would Pearl be interested?

The thinking or hope is Pearl would like to be the top dog at the program and at Tennessee he will never be that. UT is football 1st

They named the court after Pat Summitt...

At Memphis he would be #1

Memphis has facilities better than most and plays in an NBA arena... the big negative is CUSA... which brings up the BCS has screwed up NCAA Basketball for schools like Memphis who got left out of the Big East expansion.

Wasn't long ago when Louisville and Memphis were almost equal... now Memphis is looked as 2nd class because of being stuck in a non-BCS conference.

sounds like AZ job and Memphis job aren't what they used to be.

BCS has made it really hard on Memphis.  Makes Memphis a lower tier school when it was on equal footing with many basketball schools before the BCS.

BCS is un-American...
