UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

DETROIT -- Perhaps a rematch between Barack Obama and John McCain can serve as the undercard.

Or how about Ivan Drago-Apollo Creed II?

Because those are the only things I can think of that were as lopsided as the first game between North Carolina and Michigan State, that 98-63 debacle here at Ford Field that had Tom Izzo wondering whether he was dumb for scheduling the made-for-TV event. When the horn sounded, the Spartans were 4-2 with an 18-point loss to Maryland and 35-point loss to North Carolina, and though many spent that December night suggesting the Tar Heels would return to Ford Field during the first weekend in April, how many of you really thought Michigan State would be the school playing them for the national title?

Rest assured, I didn't.

Hell, as recently as Saturday at noon I didn't think Michigan State would be playing them for the national title. But here I am, late Saturday (early Sunday, technically), writing about Monday's title game between UNC and MSU, and I couldn't be more excited despite that December blowout, because I don't think this game will be anything like that game.

Why?

Because Goran Suton is playing.

(He was hurt last time.)

And because 70,000-plus will be cheering for the Spartans.

(Only 25,267 attended that December game.)

And because this Michigan State team is better than that Michigan State team.

(It just is.)

Similar to Billy Donovan's first national championship team, Izzo has his Spartans playing well at the right time, playing their best down this stretch, and sometimes that's the key to this stuff. Of course, North Carolina is playing well right now, too. Awfully well, in fact. So it's possible Michigan State might just be out-manned Monday night, and Tyler Hansbrough will get the send-off most have long expected.

Or maybe not. Honestly, who knows? But either way, what I do know is that this city will be jumping for the next 48 hours, covered in green from Canada to Greektown, and the build-up to Monday night should be splendid.

With any luck, the actual game will be, too.

With Izzo on one sideline, I'd say it's more likely than not.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

You must have slept thru the games yesterday.  The officials kept Mich St in the game until they finally had it won and tried hard to help Villa stay in it.  Carolina is good enough to win without the officials help as was the case yesterday.  Villanova pushed to get a rebound, grabbed our jersey, grabbed our arms, used their elboes to get position and they got away with it.  No we did not play our best game but when the officials are helping a team stay in it, is gard to pull away.  Mish St. is playing very well and i congratulate them, but you know and i know that they don't have the horses to keep up with us.  GO HEELS!

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Anyone remember that cbs article before the tournament about hometeam advantage in the tourney? It stated that throughout the tourneys history those teams playing close to home have a sizeable advantage and equally sizeable record in the tourneys history. I do believe this is another case of home court advantage for michigan state. They are playing well but THAT well, cmon. If they go on to beat UNC I say BS and there should be a seperate neutral court for the championship game. No, I don't know how that would work, but it still should happen. This tourney is a sham. By the way my team is the Oregon Ducks so I am not biased in my opinion.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

 SpacemanSpiff,

I really get tired of hearing MSU fans saying that people were taking them lightly.  That is just another excuse to try to inflate things.  MSU is not being taken lightly.  MSU is a #2 seed.  Please.

MSU just played better not because the other team did not respect MSU or took them lightly.  Give me a break.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Seriously? You want to talk about the ACC losing to the Big 10 after how many ACC/Big 10 Challenges?  Michigan State has lost to Carolina 3 times in the last 5 years, tomorrow is going to be number 4.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Go ahead and keep taking these Spartans lightly tar heel fans.  Make a call to Kansas, Louisville and UConn about this MSU team.  UNC is beatable, but I hope Hackboro and the other tar heel thugs think just like the tar heel redneck faithful, that this will be a cakewalk.  We'll see Tuesday morning.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Actually, President Obama won by more than 2 to 1 margin in states won.  It was over before I put my 2 year old to bed on election night.  It was a lopsided win for Obama.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

 Hoodwinked,

1. Tom Izzo is a great coach

Izzo has been to the title game 4 previous and won one time.  I believe Roy Williams has won once as well.  So I guess Izzo winning one title makes him better than Roy Williams as a coach.

2. They are playing the best basketball in the nation

Sure MSU is deep but I would have to contest that MSU is playing the best basketball in the nation.  I am not a fan of either team and I honestly  think UNC is playing just as good or better than MSU.  UNC has won by double digits in all games in the tournament.  Whether you think they played anyone or not is irrelevant.  They beat who they had to beat and was not close.   I think UNC has so many weapons that it will be hard to double team any one player on UNC.

You are a MSU fan so your comments are clearly biased and unobjective.  To show you I have no bias in my comments.  If MSU wins I have a chance to win $$$ in a pool so I am being realistic of what I have seen from both teams so far in the tournament.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

it will be a good game and alot closer than the first meeting dec 3 but i still think unc will pull it out.but the main factor will depend on what team is able to control the tempo of the game. msu with its controlled half-court  game vs unc fast break offense, it will be close but im putting my money on unc to win by 8-10pts.
