UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Posted on: April 5, 2009 1:20 am

DETROIT -- Perhaps a rematch between Barack Obama and John McCain can serve as the undercard.

Or how about Ivan Drago-Apollo Creed II?

Because those are the only things I can think of that were as lopsided as the first game between North Carolina and Michigan State, that 98-63 debacle here at Ford Field that had Tom Izzo wondering whether he was dumb for scheduling the made-for-TV event. When the horn sounded, the Spartans were 4-2 with an 18-point loss to Maryland and 35-point loss to North Carolina, and though many spent that December night suggesting the Tar Heels would return to Ford Field during the first weekend in April, how many of you really thought Michigan State would be the school playing them for the national title?

Rest assured, I didn't.

Hell, as recently as Saturday at noon I didn't think Michigan State would be playing them for the national title. But here I am, late Saturday (early Sunday, technically), writing about Monday's title game between UNC and MSU, and I couldn't be more excited despite that December blowout, because I don't think this game will be anything like that game.

Why?

Because Goran Suton is playing.

(He was hurt last time.)

And because 70,000-plus will be cheering for the Spartans.

(Only 25,267 attended that December game.)

And because this Michigan State team is better than that Michigan State team.

(It just is.)

Similar to Billy Donovan's first national championship team, Izzo has his Spartans playing well at the right time, playing their best down this stretch, and sometimes that's the key to this stuff. Of course, North Carolina is playing well right now, too. Awfully well, in fact. So it's possible Michigan State might just be out-manned Monday night, and Tyler Hansbrough will get the send-off most have long expected.

Or maybe not. Honestly, who knows? But either way, what I do know is that this city will be jumping for the next 48 hours, covered in green from Canada to Greektown, and the build-up to Monday night should be splendid.

With any luck, the actual game will be, too.

With Izzo on one sideline, I'd say it's more likely than not.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

You know, i've looked at the message boards before the Kansas game...before the Louisville game...and before the UCONN game...all the same comments about how MSU doesn't have a chance...and yet...they won each game by 5, 12, and 9 points respectively.  Give MSU a little credit...we've earned it.

If all of you guys are fans of college basketball just sit down and enjoy a great game.  Not one of you KNOWS what is going to happen tonight.  Let the boys play and we'll see what happens.  Carolina is a very strong team with pure atheletes and MSU is a very diciplined team with one of the best coaches ever.  It will be a game...

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Im expecting a real good game. Do I think UNC will win? Yes. Would I be stunned if MSU did? Not in the slightest. And I really wouldn't put much stock in the results of a December game.

I completely agree with the above statement.

I CANNOT BELIEVE some MSU fan hasnt already said..."Kansas beat us in the regular season too, shows how much that means in March"

Actually, MSU beat Kansas in the regular season too.

Here's hoping for a great game tonight and may the best team win.  GO STATE!

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

I have read through this entire thread and I am surprised that not many, if any, posts were made in reference to the Tarheels are on a mission.  They were favorites by many to win it all last season.  And got it ripped away coming out flat against Kansas.

This team is full of Juniors and Seniors, NBA caliber Juniors and Seniors.  This a veteran team on a mission.  A team on a mission to finish what they didn't finish last year.  367 days later they get their shot.  As the great Mr. T would say. "I PITY THE FOOL" to think that Carolina will be nervous and concerned about anyone or anything wearing GREEN on Monday Night.  The only Green they will be concerned with is Danny Green doing his thing as a leader on this team.

God knows I was happy to see Michigan St beat Louisville and U Conn. They beat two of my most hated teams but Carolina is just too strong.

Go Tarheels

Choke!? In case you havent noticed, Heels are running on all cylinders. However, only way they'll lose tonight is if they beat themselves.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

UNC will be cutting down the nets tonight...period. Suton will definitely make a difference, but I know Roy has prepared for that. Hell he was probably prepared for that back in December. Im sure all those Nova and UConn fans that sold their tickets to MSU faithful will make some difference and we'll see if Magic can coach those boys on how to keep Ty out the lane. Even if they are effective, too much firepower. It wont be a 35 point blow out this time...maybe just 12-14.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Whether or not the ACC won the "challenge" or Wisconsin beat Florida State in round 1 doesn't mean a damn thing. You have 2 excellent teams with excellent coaches playing against each other tonight, and THATS IT. Purude, FSU, Duke, Maryland, Minnesota, whoever doesnt factor into the equation. Im expecting a real good game. Do I think UNC will win? Yes. Would I be stunned if MSU did? Not in the slightest. And I really wouldn't put much stock in the results of a December game. I CANNOT BELIEVE some MSU fan hasnt already said..."Kansas beat us in the regular season too, shows how much that means in March", but consider that my gift to you.

Oh, and just a point of emphasis, Big10ers....please dont begin your argument about the stregth of the Big 10 with..."Penn State won the NIT". Kind of counter-intuitive.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Are you out of your friggin mind!? You must be a Michigan State fan. lol

North Carolina wins this game by at least 7 or 8 points and will overwhelm the Spartans. Every single player on the starting lineup for the Tarheels is good enough to play in the pro's... every last one of them! They play tremendous defense but get no credit for it and can blast three's with ease but get no credit for that either. Not to mention they drain there free throws. This is the most complete team that I've seen in years!

I'll give Mich State credit...they have beaten two very good teams in Louisville and Connecticut. But they won those games for one reason and one reason only....and that's because they dictated the tempo. That will not happen against the Tarheels. There's a reason why the coach of the Tarheels has all those titles and is considered one of the very best in the game today. He will not be out coached on Monday and there is no way in hell that Tyler Hansbro ends his career without a national title! It will not happen. If your a betting man I hope your not taking the Spartans to win outright...if you do your going to be sorry my friend.

THIS IS FOR ALL NC FANS THAT KEEP BRINGING UP THE GAME IN DEC. I DON'T CARE WHO PLAYED THEN OR DIDN'T PLAY. ONE THING THEY WEREN'T PLAYING FOR THEN WAS THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN FRONT OF 72,000 FANS ON NATIONAL TV BOTH TEAMS ARE PLAYING GOOD RIGHT NOW BUT WHEN THE GAMES STARTS CAROLINA CAN'T START OFF THE GAME 35 POINTS AHEAD U GOTTA EARN THAT VICTORY THIS TIME UNDER DIFFERENT TERMS THERES A TROPHY AND THE END OF THIS GAME AND IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT OUTCOME.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

With all due respect to the MSU team, coach, fans, bandwagon, and all the talk of the injury plagued Spartans back in December, how in the world can Spartan nation not appreciate this 2009 NCAA tournament Tar Heel team?!  This is a joke.  Not to mention that the Tar Heels a are not the same team they were when they wiped out the Spartans back in December.  Ed Davis is now a lottery pick player, Tyler Zeller is getting solid minutes and at 7 feet, he will present issues for the Spartan frontcourt.  I honestly don't need to write anything about the Tar Heel back court and its depth because the bottom line is this...there is no comaparison in the college game, especially between the two teams left.  Aside from the overall depth, speed, and yes...defense of the back court, there is Lawson...and with him healthy, any defense will cripple.  Hey, it's been a great run for the green and white and I think it's been a remarkable story for Detroit, but the fairytale will end tomorrow.  Too much talent, too much offense means one the thumb!

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

college basketball is like no other sport when it comess to winning a title. Emotion and heart in one night is all u need. i have witnessed some heavy under dogs win the national title NC State over Houston in 83 NOBODY gave State a chance that night; 2 years later nova shocked G'town. G'Town smacked Nova around twice that season and were playing in there 3rd straight title game. and just ask UNLV about that final four date with Duke in the early 90's and just a year earlier with the same team Duke lost the title by 30 to them. U can't game plan for heart, passion and sometimes fate. Just don't be to quick to plan the victory parade in chapel hill or u might find the tar heels on the other end of history
