UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Posted on: April 5, 2009 1:20 am

DETROIT -- Perhaps a rematch between Barack Obama and John McCain can serve as the undercard.

Or how about Ivan Drago-Apollo Creed II?

Because those are the only things I can think of that were as lopsided as the first game between North Carolina and Michigan State, that 98-63 debacle here at Ford Field that had Tom Izzo wondering whether he was dumb for scheduling the made-for-TV event. When the horn sounded, the Spartans were 4-2 with an 18-point loss to Maryland and 35-point loss to North Carolina, and though many spent that December night suggesting the Tar Heels would return to Ford Field during the first weekend in April, how many of you really thought Michigan State would be the school playing them for the national title?

Rest assured, I didn't.

Hell, as recently as Saturday at noon I didn't think Michigan State would be playing them for the national title. But here I am, late Saturday (early Sunday, technically), writing about Monday's title game between UNC and MSU, and I couldn't be more excited despite that December blowout, because I don't think this game will be anything like that game.

Because Goran Suton is playing.

(He was hurt last time.)

And because 70,000-plus will be cheering for the Spartans.

(Only 25,267 attended that December game.)

And because this Michigan State team is better than that Michigan State team.

(It just is.)

Similar to Billy Donovan's first national championship team, Izzo has his Spartans playing well at the right time, playing their best down this stretch, and sometimes that's the key to this stuff. Of course, North Carolina is playing well right now, too. Awfully well, in fact. So it's possible Michigan State might just be out-manned Monday night, and Tyler Hansbrough will get the send-off most have long expected.

Or maybe not. Honestly, who knows? But either way, what I do know is that this city will be jumping for the next 48 hours, covered in green from Canada to Greektown, and the build-up to Monday night should be splendid.

With any luck, the actual game will be, too.

With Izzo on one sideline, I'd say it's more likely than not.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

I laugh at all of the Big 10 haters claiming MSU will get crushed again by UNC. Are you using any sort of logic when you make these proclamations or just speaking out of your bum? My guess is the latter. You are all using the EXACT same reasons for why UNC will beat MSU that you and people similar to you used to justify their reasoning that UConn and Louisville would crush MSU. Guess what? MSU handled both of those teams with some ease. This team isn't remotely close to the MSU team that UNC whooped earlier in the season. Yea UNC had a couple of reserves out in that game, but give me a break, they are not key players. MSU had one of their best players out in Suton, and the Big 10 player of the year was playing injured in that game as well. Walton is a lockdown defender, and will shut down whoever he is put on. Hansbrough has proven he is not that big of a force inside when matched up with someone who can push him around. He will not have a good game. UNC may very well win, but it will be an extremely close game, and if you think otherwise you are a homer and a hater. That is the truth. Book this post. UNC will not win by more than 10, and that's IF they win.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Well written.  I must also add that the Freshman class of MSU has matured greatly since that first meeting.  It hurt to be beaten SO BIG in that first battle.  But it will be so sweet to win the war!

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

May I dreaw your attention to the fact that  only 2 teams above a 4-seed advanced to the sweet 16...........Purdue @ a 5, and AZ @ a 12.

There were NO nobodies left at that point, much less after only 1,2, and 3 seeds advanced to the great 8.,

Nova was definitely out manned vs Pitt....but they overcame those deficiencies with more intensity and grace under pressure.

Saying that NC didn't play a top 25 team in the tournament is about as absurd as Michael Vick's airport bong water incident.

I AM BY NO STRETCH OF THE IMAINATION anything close to a NC fan. In fact, I like to entertain myself with the notion that

"NC blue is just past tense for NC blows"   BUT...........

NC WILL deliver another spanking to MICH ST , maybe not as severe as the one delivered earlier in the season........but oh so much more PAINFUL. *note: the MORE the refs "let them play" is directly proportional to the extremity of said SSS WHIPPING

Ironically, delivered by the NCAA's Career record holder for scar tissue accrued!

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Silly and hypocrital post.  Isn't that the same thing Big East and Big 12 teams said about the ACC and Big Ten?  What you are saying is that Mich. ST didn't play anyone during the regular season, thus, Carolina will destroy Mich. St. because Carolina did play good teams, in additon to destroying Mich. ST earlier this year by 35.  Now, does that make sense?

As for MSU being hurt and scheduling problems, wasn't UNC hurt as well?  Hanbrough just came back 2 games before from injury.  Ginyard and Zellar were both out, so UNC wasn't even at full strength.  And didn't UNC just get back from California and Hawaii trip?

I mean, c'mon, think before you post.  Your comments sound silly.  You don't get to the championship games without playing good teams.  Maybe UNC is just playing that well, just like MSU.  Have you ever thought about that?

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Uh, again, a silly post.  "lawson aint gonna do squat against whalton..if u dont know who walton is you will after monday night my friend..hahahahah"

Apparently, Lawson did do squat against Walton and Lucas on Dec. 3rd of this season, and we know what happened then.  Apparently, you must not know Walton did against Lawson because Lawson's team won by 35, and Walton's team were embarrassed.

Silly posts after silly posts.  SMH

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Usually, I don't respond to posts because like many of us, we are all fans of whatever school.  We think our favorite team will win because of several factors, and that's good.  Brings out the excitement and school spirit.  However, when people post silly and hypocrital comments, then I have to respond.

First, let's start off with the statement that UNC didn't play anyone on the road to Detroit.  Who cares who they played?  The only thing that matters is they won, and won by double digits each game.  Except for LSU, the games were never in doubt.  This type of statement is EXACTLY what was said by the Big East and Big 12 fans where they said the ACC and Big Ten doesn't play anyone, thus, won't do well in the tourney.  Well, guess what, what teams are playing in the Final?  A Big Ten and ACC school.  So, again, what does who do you play have to do with anything?  Just a ridiculous statment and you was probably the same person who defended Mich.ST when they said they didn't play anyone during the Big Ten season.

Second, let's take the first game UNC and Mich. St played.  Despite Mich. ST. schedule and players hurt, but wasn't Tyler Zellar, Marcus Ginyard, and Hansbrough hurt as well?  Even though TH played the game, wasn't it only his 2nd or 3rd game back?  Now tell me, what happened?  Yea, UNC destroyed Mich.ST in the same venue they are playing Monday night.  Izzo, not Williams or other critics, stated "Even at 100%, we still would have lost by 20".  Now, that is an eyebrow raiser for your own coach to say that.  Now, Mich. St is a different and better team, however, so is Carolina.  Dec. 3rd game has no bearing whatsoever, but it amazes me how people think Mich. St. will "smack" Carolina, when Carolina is really not playing on all cylinders and destroying teams.

Third, Mich St. better watch out.  I give them credit for beating USC, but USC was inconsistent all year.  I give them credit for beat U of L, but Louisville was so caught up with posing for the cameras after big play that they forgot it takes 40 minutes to win a game.  UConn, well, the scouting report with them was to run them, and Mich St. did just that.  However, with Lucious errant 3 pointers and Mich St. playing erracticly, trust me, if they try to run with UNC, they will get blown out the gym.  Unlike UConn, UNC would make Mich St pay for not capitalizing on mistakes made.  And, if Mich St. plays that half court offense, then UNC's defense with their big men, will contain Mich ST.  Michigan St boasts depth, but not as much as UNC.  So,  Mich ST. is doomed no matter what offense they play.

Now, anything can happen, but that's the beauty of March Madness.  ANY team can win.  But to say a team didn't beat no one on their road to the championship is both hypocritical and silly because you have to beat someone to get there.  From both fans perspective, let's just say that both teams have a chance to win and let's see what happens on Monday.  I believe Carolina will win because just like they did in '05, with Illinois talking about their advantage playing close to home and stating they were a team of destiny, they got beat.  All that hype and home advantage and blah didn't matter.  UNC was the winner because UNC, on that day, was better.

Go Heels but good luck to both teams.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

I'm not too sure about that.  I think both Mi State and UConn looked better than NC last night.  That should have been the championship game.  We will see Monday night.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Uh, like he choked in '05?  Then Izzo is the ultimate choke because he too has been to multiple Final 4's with only 1 title.  I guess Ben Howland is a choker because he went to three Final 4's in 3 years and didn't win.  I guess Bill Self is a choker with numerous talented teams and only winning 1 title.  Same goes for Lute Olson, Rick Pitino, and countless of others.

I mean, c'mon now.  That's a silly statement to make.
