UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Posted on: April 5, 2009 1:20 am

DETROIT -- Perhaps a rematch between Barack Obama and John McCain can serve as the undercard.

Or how about Ivan Drago-Apollo Creed II?

Because those are the only things I can think of that were as lopsided as the first game between North Carolina and Michigan State, that 98-63 debacle here at Ford Field that had Tom Izzo wondering whether he was dumb for scheduling the made-for-TV event. When the horn sounded, the Spartans were 4-2 with an 18-point loss to Maryland and 35-point loss to North Carolina, and though many spent that December night suggesting the Tar Heels would return to Ford Field during the first weekend in April, how many of you really thought Michigan State would be the school playing them for the national title?

Rest assured, I didn't.

Hell, as recently as Saturday at noon I didn't think Michigan State would be playing them for the national title. But here I am, late Saturday (early Sunday, technically), writing about Monday's title game between UNC and MSU, and I couldn't be more excited despite that December blowout, because I don't think this game will be anything like that game.

Because Goran Suton is playing.

(He was hurt last time.)

And because 70,000-plus will be cheering for the Spartans.

(Only 25,267 attended that December game.)

And because this Michigan State team is better than that Michigan State team.

(It just is.)

Similar to Billy Donovan's first national championship team, Izzo has his Spartans playing well at the right time, playing their best down this stretch, and sometimes that's the key to this stuff. Of course, North Carolina is playing well right now, too. Awfully well, in fact. So it's possible Michigan State might just be out-manned Monday night, and Tyler Hansbrough will get the send-off most have long expected.

Or maybe not. Honestly, who knows? But either way, what I do know is that this city will be jumping for the next 48 hours, covered in green from Canada to Greektown, and the build-up to Monday night should be splendid.

With any luck, the actual game will be, too.

With Izzo on one sideline, I'd say it's more likely than not.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

You are an idiot. Carolina beat a really good Nova team  that was playing as well as any in the country so come off your high horse. Carolina is playing as well as anybody else. if MSU had beaten Oklahoma you would be saying how great Oklahoma was. State gets thier butt kicked again by UNC. Both Louisville and UConn underestimated MSU but UNC will not.

UNC vs. MSU again? Excuses already?

I keep hearing..."if the refs let them play" on this board...mainly from the MSU supporters but a little from UNC, too.

All that is neccessary is an evenly called game...whether the refs call it tight or "let them play" is irrelevant as long as it is evenly called.

But now the Spartans seem like they are already expecting to get shafted on the calls...and priming the pumps for an excuse after the game is over.

And someone else mentioned that the ACC = Big East and that the Big 10 owns the ACC (and big east) an ACC team you beat this year...oh wait, Purdue beat Boston College.

I think it is going to be a good game...that MSU is capabable of wining...but I don't think it is a given that MSU wins "if the refs let them play".

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

That's All I have heard from Louisville and Uconn fans.  "Good Luck stopping all these "future NBA players""  Well guess what, all those players from Louisville and Uconn are @ home now.  Yes earlier this season Carolina won big, but Goran Suton was not playing and State wasn't coming off of 2 huge wins against 2 number 1 seeds.  Any idea the confidence that 2 wins like that give a team?  Everyone has picked against MSU the last 3 tournament games and that did not affect the outcome.  Go ahead, pick Carolina.  You are just going to be thinking the same thing Louisville and Uconn were thinking after they got beat......."what the hell just happened?" It's called Big Ten Defense, that's what the hell just happened.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

98-63, goof.  12/3/08.

And it wasn't even that close.  Carolina would have won by 50+ if they wanted to but when you are playing the "walk-ons" with 10 minutes to play in the 2nd half, its hard to maintain a 40 point lead against players on actual scholarship.

And if you think Suton makes a 35 point difference, you must have been one wild and crazy guy on the short bus.

Heels will win their 6th game in a row in the tourney by double digits Monday night- book it.  And will do it in front of 70,000 Spartoonies screaming their poor little overmatched hearts out.

UNC vs. MSU again? Seriously?

Good to see the first moron has entered the message board.  Let me clarify your lack of knowledge of the brackets, indicated UNC hasn't played a Top 25 team on their march of utter destruction to the title.  Well, pardon me for correcting you but if open your eyes and revisit the brackets, UNC was the only, I repeat ONLY, team of the Top 8 seeds guaranteed to play a ranked team in the 2nd Round.  They were playing the winner of #20 ranked LSU vs. #23 ranked Butler.  Not a single one of the other Top 8 seeds had that.  Not one- go ahead and look and tell me I'm wrong becuase I'm not.  And remember (since you are probably a little slow on the uptake), I said "guaranteed to play a ranked team in the 2nd Round".

Now, let's move on to the 3rd Round.  UNC played #10 ranked Gonzaga (what- 10th best in the country doesn't count in your book)?!?!?

Then, they play #7 Oklohama (I guess since you're not counting playing the #10 team in the country, you probably aren't counting the 7th ranked Sooners.

And not only have they won, they have beat every RANKED team (all 4 that they have played in the Tourney) by double digits.

Game.  Set.  Match.  Go lay down and rest your feeble mind.

They will beat MSU as bad as they feel like Monday night.  Not sure what the record is for margin of victory in the Championship game but it may well be set tomorrow night.

Um actually LSU was 20th as an 8th seed, Gonzaga was ranked 10th as a 4 seed, Oklahoma was ranked 8th as a 2 seed, and villanova is 11th but playing much better than that going in. And what did all these teams have in common? They got embarassed by the Tar Heels (with the exception of LSU who gave us a good game for 35 minutes)...Goran Suton won't even be able to blink before the tar heels are back down the other side of the court, he'll be as ineffective as he was against uconn, the only difference is UNC will actually come to play.
