Calipari takes Cousins to UK

DeMarcus Cousins will follow John Calipari to Kentucky.

"I just committed tonight,” Cousins told Scout.com's Evan Daniels late Tuesday. “I’m going to UK.”

Cousins had spent the past month committed to Memphis, where Calipari coached until he left for Kentucky last week. At the time of Calipari's departure, Cousins did not officially decommit. But it was clear the McDonald's All-American probably wouldn't sign with Memphis regardless of the next coach, and that became public knowledge late Tuesday when Cousins -- who is rated as the sixth-best prospect in the Class of 2009 -- committed to Kentucky.

Now to the questions ...

1. What does this mean for Daniel Orton?

There has been speculation that Orton -- the 12th-best prospect in the Class of 2009 who signed with UK under Billy Gillispie -- would ask for a release if Cousins committed to Kentucky because Orton and Cousins are both big men, and if Patrick Patterson were to remain in school UK would have a crowded frontcourt. However, sources close to the Kentucky program told CBSSports.com that Calipari is working to keep Orton on board, and the ideal scenario would be Orton and Cousins enrolling together.

2. What about Xavier Henry and John Wall?

At least one media outlet reported that new Memphis coach Josh Pastner would hire Henry's father, Carl, in an attempt to keep the McDonald's All-American committed to Memphis, but industry sources told CBSSports.com that's simply not going to happen. Thus, Henry will re-open his recruitment and probably choose between Kansas and Kentucky. As for Wall, the nation's top point guard prospect remains uncommitted. But Kentucky is very much involved, meaning there is a chance that Cousins, Orton, Henry and Wall could play together for Calipari at Kentucky, although it's unclar whether that's a likely scenario or merely a possibility.

Wall is the No. 2 prospect in the Class of 2009.

Henry is the No. 4 prospect in the Class of 2009.

Calipari takes Cousins to UK

Very well said!! It's amuzing reading all these posts, but yes, the fact is cal is moving on. The majority of Kentucky fans don't wish anything bad on Memphis. I understand Memphis fans are mad at him for leaving... we went through it with Pitino when he left for Boston. Hopefully both programs do well.

So I figure, this deal was done on Memphis's dime, just like all of the recruits this classless chump has taken. I figure he was recruiting while hiding like a petty thief in his house the day he quit. This guy could sell an ice maker to Eskimos, but you love to hate him.

Calipari takes Cousins to UK

UofMTigerFan:  I don't normally post on here, but I just had to let you know how much I loved your post -- and how you echo what I and tens of thousands of Memphis fans are feeling right now.

I've been a loyal Memphis fan from the Memphis State days, and this whole thing with Calipari was enough to almost make me give up watching college basketball.  But I've loved the Memphis Tigers far too much for far too long to stop supporting our team.

There is just something inherently wrong with a system that allows a coach to leave one program and take with him the recruits that he courted and signed on that program's dime.

Why aren't more sports writers talking about this?  Why isn't it an issue?

I saw John Calipari on an ESPN interview.  He looked into the camera and said words to the effect that he was telling recruits who signed with Memphis that they should stay at Memphis.  He should have added, "but if they don't stay at Memphis, I'll take them at UK and will sleep just fine at night."

What Calipari has done is beyond despicable.  If he wins a NC at UK, I hope he chokes on it.

I just hope we Memphis fans get to see it when the karma bug bites him in the butt.

Calipari takes Cousins to UK

Lets be clear Calipari did not recruit Henry or Cousins his Assistant Coach (the new head coasch) did, so maybe they will feel more allegiance to him as opposed to Calipari (the guy who simply left because he wanted to prove he could win outside C-USA) Calipari said himself he would have gone even if Memphis paid more than Kentucky...which I heard they were willing to match...

I am not 100% sure if the last comment is accurate.

hard to blame the recruits...what reason is there to go to Memphis if Calipari isnt there? kentucky is still kentucky no matter who the coach is....

i cant stand calipari and hope he goes down in flames, but he wont...but if the net result of his leaving is Xavier Henry ending up at Kansas, i'll be a happy man

UK Fans...please don't take offense if some of us Tiger fans want Cal to go down in flames.  It has nothing to do with Kentucky.  It wouldn't matter what other great school Cal went to...I would still want him to fail.  He won't fail, but that doesn't stop me from hoping to feel a twinge of schadenfreude over the next few years.

There is no doubt that Memphis is in a bad conference and other than basketball, there really isn't anything we do well.  We have a relatively bad AD and it is reflected in the fact that we are stuck in C-USA.  However, that doesn't mean I don't love the Tigers.  I do.  Just like I love the NY Mets.  I guess I am just a glutton for punishment.

The practice of havving a booster pay for a walk on's tuition may be common in Calipari land, but would be a huge NCAA violation.  Not that violating NCAA rules would slow down Kentucky, history shows that NCAA problems do not concern UK nearly as much as NIT invitations.

Yep, heard about that today but I remain confident that Cal can still get him to go to UK. Too many people in that position on Kansas' roster. Playing time at UK would be a given for Orton.

Gotcha... At the time I posted, I wasn't really sure if it was fact or just rumor and figured you guys would know. I know he had some other schools on his list besides Kansas but yeah, I guess he's just wanting to keep his options a little more open until Patterson decides what to do.

If he dosn't want to fight Cousins and Patterson for PT, send him down our way...It seems that Memphis is suddenly in need of a big man again!Tongue out

With Uk's fan base starved for winning and missing the tourney for the first time in years, yes I absolutely believe this could have been a package deal.  I am not saying it is but to totally dismiss the idea given the current state of UK basketball would be very naive.
