Calipari takes Cousins to UK

DeMarcus Cousins will follow John Calipari to Kentucky.

"I just committed tonight,” Cousins told's Evan Daniels late Tuesday. “I’m going to UK.”

Cousins had spent the past month committed to Memphis, where Calipari coached until he left for Kentucky last week. At the time of Calipari's departure, Cousins did not officially decommit. But it was clear the McDonald's All-American probably wouldn't sign with Memphis regardless of the next coach, and that became public knowledge late Tuesday when Cousins -- who is rated as the sixth-best prospect in the Class of 2009 -- committed to Kentucky.

Now to the questions ...

1. What does this mean for Daniel Orton?

There has been speculation that Orton -- the 12th-best prospect in the Class of 2009 who signed with UK under Billy Gillispie -- would ask for a release if Cousins committed to Kentucky because Orton and Cousins are both big men, and if Patrick Patterson were to remain in school UK would have a crowded frontcourt. However, sources close to the Kentucky program told that Calipari is working to keep Orton on board, and the ideal scenario would be Orton and Cousins enrolling together.

2. What about Xavier Henry and John Wall?

At least one media outlet reported that new Memphis coach Josh Pastner would hire Henry's father, Carl, in an attempt to keep the McDonald's All-American committed to Memphis, but industry sources told that's simply not going to happen. Thus, Henry will re-open his recruitment and probably choose between Kansas and Kentucky. As for Wall, the nation's top point guard prospect remains uncommitted. But Kentucky is very much involved, meaning there is a chance that Cousins, Orton, Henry and Wall could play together for Calipari at Kentucky, although it's unclar whether that's a likely scenario or merely a possibility.

Wall is the No. 2 prospect in the Class of 2009.

Henry is the No. 4 prospect in the Class of 2009.

1 recruit down, 4 more to go, ey John! Way to be a man of your word and say that you weren't going after any recruits that signed with Memphis. Could Cal actually be the greasy used car salesman when always heard about Tiger fans?!?!

UK fans, I sure hope you get the title next year. Your boosters and university paid a lot of money to get Cal, his staff and #1 recruiting class. How long do you fans think they'll keep Cal when he gets outcoached with all these NBA players on his roster? It's happened the last two years in the tournament, and Bruce Pearl has his number, so I wanted to get your input on Cal's coaching ability.

Well it seems like UK is going to become great again. As more high school players see better players go to UK then of course they want to also so that they can win. Everyone one likes winning. I don't see the why all these players want to go to kentucky now that Calipari is there. Memphis is still a good program. I didn't think that Calipari would turn UK around and have a chance of going to the final four this next year but right now it looks like he will have a great chance of doing it.

Cousins still has to become academically eligible.  That is not a sure thing...not even at Kentucky.

First let's establish this fact: Memphis was not attempting to buy a coach, they were trying to keep our program intact.  The AD, boosters and fans knew if he left; he was taking everyone (assistants, staff) with him.  This was not the first time he had flirted with leaving since he came to Memphis.  We knew what the fallout would be.

Second, every coach that leaves a program has contacts with the recruits they were bringing in.  Why would they not?  They have been in constant contact with them for almost 1, maybe even 2 years.  In the 3 hours Cal was sitting in his house before he made the decision "official" he was calling recruits and talking to current players (Witherspoon) trying to convince them to GO TO KENTUCKY.  And if it wasn't Cal "officially" talking to them; then World Wide Wes was.  If you think he wan't on a conference or three way call with the recruits and Wes; you have a lot to learn about Wes.  Get used to seeing him around Lexington.  That is how college basketball works now.  If you believe he (Cal) wasn't working the recruits; then you are sorely mistaken.

Third, there were plenty of bad things to be said around here before he left about Cal.  Cal blowing the championship game, his recruiting tactics.  There were plenty of people around here that didn't like either.  Cal still had a reputation as "a slick used car salesman who speaks in half truths."  Just go back and think about when Kentucky hired BCG.  Cal wanted the job, once his name was mentioned around Lexington it was not only no, but a resounding "HELL NO!"  Kentucky called Cal classless a few years back, and now all of a sudden; he is your program's savior. HA!  I'm glad he's gone.  Maybe our athletic program as a whole can get better.  He will hold your athletic department hostage- mark my words.  Barnhart, after the first disagreement with Cal; will be gone.  Your other sports will suffer with him there.  I'm not preaching against the University of Kentucky.  I'm just telling you what is going to happen.  I don't wish Kentucky bad.  I am just informing your fans about what has, is and will happen.

Let's not forget this either, CAL IS NOT A GREAT COACH.  HE IS A GREAT RECRUITER.  Players got him to a national championship game, HE LOST IT.  Your new "great" coach will admit- he lost that title game.

Good luck to your Wildcats, not that you all will need it.

Unless you are up by 9 with 2 minutes left in the title game.

Sour grapes??? Sounds like some people are just annoyed about the fact that their coach and recruits are now ours. Well no $#!t we bought your coach, but the recruits? That was all them, it was Cousin's decision to come play at UK, and whoever else chooses to come play at UK. I didn't hear any of you Memphis fans complaining about Calipari being a cheater while he was there.

Just to fair about Roy leaving Kansas, he left the team on probation for something really stupid, buying gifts for players whose eligibility had run out.  We're not even talking about high-value stuff, it was stuff like suits to help the kids get a good start in life post-college.  And he did take a recruit with him to UNC, just not immediately.  Tyler Hansbrough would have been a Jayhawk had Roy stayed at Kansas.  I apologize if it sounds like I'm bitter about Roy leaving because I'm not, I just wanted to point out what the situation at KU was after Roy left and the impact it still has on the program today.

Well that coach and those recruits you say we purchased, I believe Memphis was trying to purchase them back.  Yes, more money couldn't keep Coach Cal in Memphis.  I'm sure last year you were living it up and didn't have one bad thing to say about Coach Cal.  Some of those recruits he is not even allowed to contact, so there is no direct persuasion from him, it's the players and the families.  I'm sorry you lost a great coach but best of luck to the Memphis Tigers next year, and be sure to follow Coach Cal's Classy Cats next season on all the big name networks.Laughing
