Calipari takes Cousins to UK

DeMarcus Cousins will follow John Calipari to Kentucky.

"I just committed tonight,” Cousins told's Evan Daniels late Tuesday. “I’m going to UK.”

Cousins had spent the past month committed to Memphis, where Calipari coached until he left for Kentucky last week. At the time of Calipari's departure, Cousins did not officially decommit. But it was clear the McDonald's All-American probably wouldn't sign with Memphis regardless of the next coach, and that became public knowledge late Tuesday when Cousins -- who is rated as the sixth-best prospect in the Class of 2009 -- committed to Kentucky.

Now to the questions ...

1. What does this mean for Daniel Orton?

There has been speculation that Orton -- the 12th-best prospect in the Class of 2009 who signed with UK under Billy Gillispie -- would ask for a release if Cousins committed to Kentucky because Orton and Cousins are both big men, and if Patrick Patterson were to remain in school UK would have a crowded frontcourt. However, sources close to the Kentucky program told that Calipari is working to keep Orton on board, and the ideal scenario would be Orton and Cousins enrolling together.

2. What about Xavier Henry and John Wall?

At least one media outlet reported that new Memphis coach Josh Pastner would hire Henry's father, Carl, in an attempt to keep the McDonald's All-American committed to Memphis, but industry sources told that's simply not going to happen. Thus, Henry will re-open his recruitment and probably choose between Kansas and Kentucky. As for Wall, the nation's top point guard prospect remains uncommitted. But Kentucky is very much involved, meaning there is a chance that Cousins, Orton, Henry and Wall could play together for Calipari at Kentucky, although it's unclar whether that's a likely scenario or merely a possibility.

Wall is the No. 2 prospect in the Class of 2009.

Henry is the No. 4 prospect in the Class of 2009.

Calipari takes Cousins to UK

THE reason he wants both Ortan and Cousins is becuase he knows Patterson is a for sure top 15 pick and will likely go to the nba. Meeks says he will "test" the waters but he will be back ! Patterson on the other hand will not only test the waters he will drink from it as well!!!! look for Ortan and Cousins inside with Meeks and Liggens at guard. You might ask wahy would a Louisville fan care? Becuase this is my own opinion and it will make our rivalry very strong!

From what I have heard is that Liggins has poor grades and will be likely to transfer thus freeing a scholarship for Wall possibly.

There are 3 scholarships open for next year:

1)  Jarred Carter graduates

2)  Michael Porter is not returning next year, he graduated in 3 years and is moving on

3)  Donald Williams, originally a walk-on, was given a one-year scholarship this year because it was available.  It is freed up for next year.

They are taken now by Orton, Cousins, and Hood

There is a concern with at least one current player about academics.

As of today, there's one scholarship available due to the graduation of Carter.  Vilirano asked out of and received a release from his LOI.  Currently, Orton is still committed to UK as well as Hood.  If both come, that leaves the team one over the scholarship limit.  With Cousins now comitting, that puts them 2 over the limit.  If Wall commits, that's 3 over.  If Henry commits (but doubtful), that's 4 over.  Therefore, 4 people would have to leave or transfer.  Potentially Meeks and/or Patterson could leave and go pro.  Hopefully, they both stay.  That means four scholarships would need to be "freed" up.  It should clear up in the next couple weeks when everyone decides if they're staying or leaving.

I actually wish the best for UK, but the recruits from this year are why Cali was hired just like IU hired Sampson to land Gordon!  I hope it works better for UK because I would not wish this on anyone!

C'mon over to the 'Ville, Orton...

Louisville could use a center to back up Terrence Jennings next year, since Pitino plans on using Samardo Samuels as a power forward (at least that's what I hear) next year.

Calipari takes Cousins to UK

From what i've read and heard he's had a few practices with the team and said he would meet with them individually and be honest with them as far as whether or not they would fit into his offense and discuss where they wanted to transfer too.

Senior, Michael Porter decided not to return next season stating that he's soon to be a father and has other priorities. And two recruits have requested to be released from their NLI.

Jodie Meeks declared for the draft but hasn't hired an agent yet so he has until June 15th to withdraw and retain his last year of eligibility. But I'm sure more will transfer or leave because of academic problems that have been suggested, or "just aren't a good fit" which seems to be their mission statement these days.

So how do the scholarship numbers work out at UK? Weren't there already more players coming in than leaving, and now Cal has added more? Is he going to boot out somebody already on scholarship or signed?

Seriously Gary do you have to stir the pot like that man? You know the natives are already restless in Memphis and you keep that up and it won't be safe for even you to drive through. Btw, I think Cal is working on a deal to have the Peabody Hotel moved to Lexington as well, so if you decide to cross on over to the dark side with Cali man I think he could get you on at WLEX 18. Word is they're looking for a guy that can take over the sports reporting. How fast are ya? You have to be able to run faster than Cutler but I think you can handle it. And they even sell booze past 2 am, no casino's yet but maybe Cal and Wes can get together and can fix that too. We even have a few five star restaurants that aren't named Steak & Shake (unlike Gainesville) so forget Detroit man! And for the Kansas fans it's pronounced za-veeee-ah and (h)n. Wink
