The Memphis class continues to fall apart

First Xavier Henry asked for a release from his national letter of intent with Memphis.

Then DeMarcus Cousins decommitted from Memphis and committed to Kentucky

Now Nolan Dennis wants a release from Memphis, too.

"We just want people to know that we are not going to attend Memphis because we were going to attend Memphis because of (John) Calipari," Carol Dennis, the mother of Nolan Dennis, told Scout.com's Evan Daniels on Wednesday. “We are going to wait and see what we are going to do from here.

"I think Nolan wants to go to Kentucky; I’m not for sure," she added. "But I know he’s not going to go to Memphis."

Just last week, Memphis had a five-player class some considered the best in the county, but Calipari's departure has killed any chance of it materializing. Junior college standouts Will Coleman and Darnell Dodson are the only Memphis recruits who haven't publicly decommitted.

Meantime, Josh Pastner isn't sleeping.

Literally.

The new Memphis coach has not slept in days.

"I haven't slept since I got the job (on Monday)," Pastner told me this afternoon. "I've been up 48 hours straight."

Yikes.

Pastner said he plans to be in bed by 10 on Wednesday night, get a solid six or seven hours of sleep and be ready to hit the road recruiting Thursday. He'll start in the Memphis area, where Class of 2010 star Joe Jackson (of White Station High) is a clear priority.

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

Great post NC4Bush. Not really, but seriously.  I've never heard these complaints about CUSA before. But you know you're right.  Memphis deserves a better conference.  Why dont' you send a note to the Dook president asking him to sponsor Memphis for membership in the ACC. We'd love to join.

I wish you all the luck in the world because I'm maybe one of the biggest TIGER fans in this world!!!! But at the same time I am absolutely sure that you should have gone after the biggest PERSONALITY you could find!!!!! ie--Bobby Knight or Larry Brown (in other words, take a really BIG chance for really BIG results!!!!!! You realize ,I'm sure, that in CUSA you must keep winning every conference game and the championship just to even get into the NCAA Tournament. So you have only 2 choices---either get in a REAL coference,or hire a high profile coach that can keep recruiting the BEST talent!!!!!!!--Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

Interesting that Henry just got his release this week, but talked to Cal after the move to KY.  I thought coaches at other schools were prohibited from talking to signed players.

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

You're exactly right.  Just check out kentucky.com and you'll see lots of posts by KY fans talking about "cleaning house" and pulling scholarships from CURRENT players to make room for Memphis' recruits.  I guess your membership in Big Blue Nation gets revoked when you don't make teh tourney.  Cal's just the guy for this program.  Dont' worry, he'll chase off all the dead weight to make room for those McD All americans.

The Lexington newspaper reported a total of 20 players at KY's practices this week, so obviously some of those guys will be shown the door to make room.

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

And what about the recruits who already signed a letter of intent at Kentucky? If they want to stay, but Cal doesn't want them, will we hear all these Ky fans crying about the poor athlete who just wanted to play for a coach? Are they going to be forced to choose another school? What about the players who have already played for KY? What about them? I get the feeling some of the KY fans will say it is wrong, but not a lot of them. It is my understanding, and I may be wrong here so don't jump down my throat because I am asking for information, that they currently have 20 total players committed to KY. Is that a correct number and if not, can some knowledgeable KY fan please tell me what the current makeup of the team is?

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

Funny how all these KY (as in the slimy jelly) fans keep spouting off about the poor recruit who should be allowed to follow the coach.  I'm not arguing that the recruits should be forced to attend Memphis, but why not make them put a little skin in the game and have a rule that says they can't follow the coach.  After all, if Cal really wanted to coach them, he would have stayed and done it.  Those recruits who signed letters are no different from the rest of the players who Cal abandoned.  The only difference is he knew the University would release the recruits (after all, he put it in the Letters of Intent for just such an occasion) and he'd be able to have instant success with players who should be playing at Memphis.

If the committed players don't want to come to Memphis, you should be glad they’re not. Remember Memphis fans if was every kids dreams to play for Memphis. Cal did not want the local talent. He wanted a national program. Memphis is now suffering for this recruiting style. Josh Partner needs to reach out to the local coaches and players and build the program Memphis and then outside of the area. Like Pastner said, there are good players out there he just has to find them.

Joe Jackson in Memphis needs to be his top priority recruit!

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

" ROY WILLIAMS refused to let any players follow him from Kansas to North Carolina because, its the ETHICAL AND CLASSY  thing to do."

Not true, Roy would have gladly taken any of the recruits he had going to Kansas to UNC.  Problem was, they weren't the best class and it is Kansas that they would be leaving.  None of them were top 10 recruits like what Memphis is losing.  Roy even referred to some of them being "stuck out there."  Bill Self was hired quickly and those recruits felt comfortable playing for him.

It sucks that players leave after a coach leaves, but it happens.  I would be really pissed off if I was a Memphis fan, not necessarily at Calipari, but at the fact that we were losing all that talent.  However, players commit to a coach just as much as to the school, unfortunately.
