The Memphis class continues to fall apart

First Xavier Henry asked for a release from his national letter of intent with Memphis.

Then DeMarcus Cousins decommitted from Memphis and committed to Kentucky

Now Nolan Dennis wants a release from Memphis, too.

"We just want people to know that we are not going to attend Memphis because we were going to attend Memphis because of (John) Calipari," Carol Dennis, the mother of Nolan Dennis, told's Evan Daniels on Wednesday. “We are going to wait and see what we are going to do from here.

"I think Nolan wants to go to Kentucky; I’m not for sure," she added. "But I know he’s not going to go to Memphis."

Just last week, Memphis had a five-player class some considered the best in the county, but Calipari's departure has killed any chance of it materializing. Junior college standouts Will Coleman and Darnell Dodson are the only Memphis recruits who haven't publicly decommitted.

Meantime, Josh Pastner isn't sleeping.

The new Memphis coach has not slept in days.

"I haven't slept since I got the job (on Monday)," Pastner told me this afternoon. "I've been up 48 hours straight."

Pastner said he plans to be in bed by 10 on Wednesday night, get a solid six or seven hours of sleep and be ready to hit the road recruiting Thursday. He'll start in the Memphis area, where Class of 2010 star Joe Jackson (of White Station High) is a clear priority.

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

You can say he's classless all you want, but John Calipari is the man that turned Memphis into an elite program. Memphis did not make Calipari; Calipari made Memphis. If these players only wanted to play at Memphis because John Calipari was the head coach, why should they have to stay? Forcing them to stay is the classless thing to do.

All Memphis needs is Conference USA.....

Conference USA will net Memphis some Tv games, many easy wins, good records, and high seeds in the tournament....Memphis will still be able to attract solid recruits with Pastner....Calipari wont be as successful in Kentucky as some may think...Tougher conference , more pressure...We all seen how he does under pressure...Choke choke..

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

I hope Coach Cal falls flat on his face.  I like guys like Mark Few who builds a program and then sticks with it even though he could leave for more storied programs.  Says something about a person when they show loyality.   I'm not saying you have to stay at the same job forever, but guys like Pitino and Calapari think they're too cool.  I love it they both fell flat on their faces in the NBA

LOL.  Well said.  Love it.  Karma's a bitch and will come back to bite him in the ass.

Ky persona is to win at all costs, Cal should fit right in.  Lookout when he finds himself not making the tournament.  TV brought the smaller schools better talent because players no longer feel it is great to just sit the bench on a national power house.  Tv gives them exposure now at the smaller colleges so they go their to play and hopefully get noticed and drafted.  Cal will get his own.  The boosters are ruthless in KY putting for sale signs in Tubby Smiths lawn when he would lose games.  Pitino wouldn't go back to KY even with the stupid money they are throwing around due to the boosters.

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

Yes he will but he won't get the caliber of players that were committed or going to commit. He will have to build completely from scratch as if Memphis didn't even make the tourney this year.

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

Memphis will be ok as long as no players transfer which right now it doesnt look like they will. Pastner will get players to come to memphis, not as good as before(obviously!) but good players. We have Kemp,Mack,Witherspoon,Niles and Sallie coming back right now. Taggert might be back and we have Angel Garcia,a top 50 player in 2008, that had too sit out last year  said he is staying at memphis. Then there is always the long shots such as Tyreke Evans staying(doubtful but his brother said if he is not a top 10 he might come back) and if C.J. Henry can not transfer Xavier might still come. Hopefully Pastner can recruit as well for himself as for Calipari and Olsen. Plus being in CUSA has one benefit because with the team we have coming back we are probably still the #1 team in the confernce. Finally all these people talking trash about memphis being dirty need to look at there own teams! Go Tigers

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

Wow.  Memphis got the shaft here.  It's so unfair that all the recruiting that Memphis paid for over the last year is undone in a week.  I don't blame these kids for wanting to go elsewhere. Their dream is to play in the NBA, so obviously they should go to the school that will give them the best chance to get exposure on a national level.  (Let's be realistic, the vast majority of these players don't have much of a future academically, so this is their one chance to make it big).

Sure, Calipari can do the honorable thing and tell these recruits that they shouldn't follow him.  However, there's no rule forcing him to do so.  He's only going to do what's best for himself.  Now we see his true colors.  Oh well, life isn't fair.  Memphis might not be very good the upcoming years... but I will always root for them.  And I will wish ill upon Calipari and any other team he coaches for the remainder of his life.

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

I'm not dwelling on the situation Roadie and I'll stop arguing about this eventually but, the garbage Calipari pulled just gets swept under the rug and is accepted as "thats just the way things are" instead of "wow thats low down".  If this would have happened to  BCS program there would be people in the national media GOING NUTS over this. However, since its memphis its ok.

and dont get the wrong idea....I think the future of memphis basketball is very bright with Josh Pastner.....I"m very excited.....if you go look on the Memphis boards you will see that I pushed for him to get the job the day after CALIPARI left....THE DAY AFTER.....its dated so I got proof.

However, this is a message board and its purpose is to discuss things and I am merely pointing out a major flaw in the system that Calipari took advantage of. He is the master of taking advantage of situations  and he is even a bigger master at making you think that everything he does is ok.

Forget Cal !! He took his "dream" job

this is whats funny about CAL...he goes over there and tells them that KY is his dream Job. Yeah, Arizona would have been his dream job too if the KY job wasnt open.....he was looking to leave here from the day he got here.....he was just waiting for the right time.....while he was here he milked it for everything he could and when the right time came.....he jumped ship..... and effed us in the azz on the way out.........i'm merely pointing out the fact that he is a slime ball...thats all.....which I allready knew but, I didnt know he would be this low....heehhehee......its all good though....i have a feeling that Karma is gonna have something to say about this....

The Memphis class continues to fall apart

I am not a ky or memphis fan.  I don't fault cal for trying to better himself.  Only time will tell if it was a good move for him. Billie G thought it was a good move for him and was he surprised.  The programs get hurt on both fronts.  I live in Ky, and no I am not a Louisville fan, and find the boosters of Ky the main villians here.  They want wins at whatever the costs it brings on fans, programs, and athletes.  This time they finally got smart.  They didn't send a recruit an envelope full of money(sutton era) and get blasted by the NCAA again, they just bought a recruiting class by hiring cal to make thier smiles bigger due to the wins.  Thier winning is at all costs.  You can have your own opinion, but college sports is the biggest loser.
