Tang to remain at Baylor

Baylor assistant Jerome Tang has decided to remain on Scott Drew's staff and not move to Memphis, a source told on Thursday. Consequently, new Memphis coach Josh Pastner will continue to operate as a one-man show because he currently has no assistants ... or even a secretary.

"I'm doing it all," Pastner said by phone late Thursday.

Yes, John Calipari even took his office manager (Lunetha Pryor) to Kentucky with him, along with assistants John Robic, Orlando Antigua and Rod Strickland. In other words, the basketball office at Memphis is pretty much empty as the April recruiting period gets underway, and it'll stay that way, at least for the time being, thanks to Tang's decision to remain at Baylor one day after interviewing at Memphis .

To put this into perspective, understand that most schools have three coaches on the road right now recruiting.

Meantime, Memphis has one coach ... period.

Tang to remain at Baylor

Forget Tang what kind of name is that anyway.

I say go for one of the local coaches, maybe the coach from Christian Brothers. He had a great season this year. I went to the games they played U of M and they were a fundementally good team.

I for one am sickened by what's been done to Memphis by not only Calipari but UK too.  The University should've had the class to refuse to accept ANY recruits who had committed, verbally or by LOI to Memphis, whether they're released by Memphis or not and whether Calipari wants them or not.

All this time I thought Kentucky hated Eddie Sutton because he sent a paper bag full of money that tore open in the mail to a California recruit, but after their ravaging of the Memphis program it looks like they hated him for not using a canvas bag.

To Josh Pastner,

Hi, I would like to extend my expertise to you on how to pick up some recruits and get a good coaching staff assembled, or at least an idea.  High School head coaches.  What do you have to lose?  If you can go get a few three star recruits and bring their coaches with them you're killing two birds with one stone.  Those coaches have scouting and recruiting ties at least locally.  You pick up four established coaches from four different regions its a start at least.  What high school head coach is going to say no to a college assistant job??  It's better then looking for coaches while he's supposed to be looking for players.

I'd love to have AA back as an assistant. He's a born winner, competitive, mature, and could be a great influence on the younger guys.  Plus the hot shots would get knocked down a peg trying to score against Coach AA!

I'm sure he's got NBA dreams and he may make a club, but i bet he ends up playing overseas before too long.

Hey coach Cali is a snake He wants Memphis to do bad, it only adds to his legacy See some who cared about a program would have left something behind to stabilize tthe program No he wants the recruits and the staff and probably the stapler See coach roy williams did his move from kansas to north carolina with class. told the recruits don't leave because i'm leaving and left things in place that allowed the program to breathe without him Coach cali is raping Memphis. Why is xavier henry father saying coach cali wants the brother at Kentucky see Coach Cali has no class move on coach cali . but Memphis is Penny Hardaway and Keith Lee, David Vaughn. I should add that they may HAVE offered him, but do we even know for a fact that Tang was in Memphis interviewing?

Yeah, shame on RC Johnson for not being able to foresee Calipari as unwilling to simply walk away and start over elsewhere, instead taking a wrecking ball to everthing he'd built here---with a little help from the university, some very dedicated boosters and a lot of very loyal fans.

Shame on RC Johnson for not being able to persuade coaches from tier one conferences that they could step right in and keep the Tiger train rolling, in some cases at a higher pay scale than Calipari's NEW one--see challenge outlined in paragraph one.

Shame on RC Johnson for the Big East not wanting our program five years ago, because at that time it made no sense for their league (or for us).  I mean, if a league doesn't WANT your program, what do you propose be done?  Take the departing schools to court?  Please provide examples of where that's been done previously, successful or not.    Oh, I see, you fire the AD; someone must be made to pay for our school's shortcomings!

What I find ironic is how Kentrucky looks down its noses at most other programs, including ours, but when it came time to try to get theirs back on track, they did a Tiger replication in Lex Vegas.  I doubt any of them will view it that way, but what ELSE are you supposed to call it when one school hires another's coach and staff plus welcomes the recruits he had lined up and opens its arms to his players from the coach's previous employ should they want to join up, too?  Calipari's departure from Memphis will NEVER be confused with Roy's departure from KU.

To blame all this on RC is shortsighted.

Additionally, there is no credible evidence that Memphis ever offered Tang the job.  When Gary types, "A source said", it could be someone who writes for a blog, someone who hangs out AT a blog or even someone who TALKED to someone who works for a blog, but I'd be surprised if it were Pastner or RC or anyone else.

Well if Joe Jackson is pro Memphis community, he certainly doesn't want to go to Tennessee.  People in Knoxville hate the City of Memphis.  I can't tell you how many disparaging remarks people made to me about Memphis when I lived in Knoxville.  It's ridiculous really.  When I lived in Memphis, I never gave Knoxville a second thought, but folks there are obsessed with Memphis for some reason.  I guess because it is a big city with universities as opposed to a university with a small city built around it.

I wasn't exactly sure why Pastner was trying to go so heavily in having the state of Texas covered, but he must have had his reasons.

As an FYI, both Josh Pastner and Bruce Pearl were at White Station High School yesterday afternoon --  Joe Jackson in their sights.  Joe is very pro local community, so the Tigers have a good chance of getting him next year, so it is good to see Josh keeping that relationship going even though he needs players for this year.
