Sources: Bledsoe plans to sign with Kentucky

Eric Bledsoe plans to announce at a Wednesday press conference that he is signing with Kentucky instead of Memphis, sources involved in the recruitment told CBSSports.com on Tuesday.

Attempts to reach Bledsoe for confirmation were unsuccessful.

His press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.

Bledsoe is a five-star prospect from Alabama many believe is the best point guard in the Class of 2009 not named John Wall. There are some questions about whether Bledsoe will become eligible to compete as a freshman because of academics. But under the assumption that he is ultimately cleared, this development ensures John Calipari will open his first season at UK with at least one competent point guard to play beside DeMarcus Cousins, Darnell Dodson and perhaps Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson (both of whom could withdraw from the NBA Draft).

Of course, Bledsoe could also quickly turn into a back-up.

The reason is because Kentucky is considered the leader to land Wall -- the projected No. 1 pick of the 2010 NBA Draft whose presence would allow Calipari to operate with a one-and-done lottery pick at point guard for the third consecutive year. There is still no timetable on an announcement from Wall, and his recruitment could drag well into May. But if Calipari gets him -- and again, almost everybody believes he will -- then UK could have a best-case-scenario line-up that looks like this:

G: John Wall
G: Jodie Meeks
G: Darnell Dodson
F: Patrick Patterson
F: DeMarcus Cousins

Key reserves: Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton, DeAndre Liggins, Darius Miller, Jon Hood, Perry Stevenson

Simply put, that roster would be favored to win the SEC.

It would likely have Kentucky in the top five of most preseason polls.

Response to ATLien:

In 2002, Syracuse missed the NCAA Tournament. In 2003, they won the National Championship.

To all those people who said "John Wall is a freak of nature he'll play wherever he goes", sure he'll play, but look at it from his point of view...he already said he's a one and done...so of course he's gonna want as many minutes as possible. So i'd guess in the 37-40 range...with the signing of bledsoe that could be knocked down to 30-35 a game, which sounds small...but factor in the fact of Patrick Patterson coming back and possibly Jodie Meeks, there isnt gonna be enough shots to go around.

Not to mention, if Wall is having an off game, Cal wont hesitate to play Bledsoe over him...why would Cal care if he irratates Wall? Whats Wall gonna do, transfer to another college instead of go to the NBA to seek revenge???

There's a reason why a lot of these one and done guys dont go to the elite programs...think about it...Michael Beasley, OJ Mayo, Kevin Durant...they want to be THE MAN.

Coach K has prolly told Wall he would be THE MAN. And think about it...if Wall takes Duke back to the final four...he has the #1 pick locked up and endorsement deals lined up.

The funny thing is that many people still don't know about one other player Kentucky has and is never mentioned but has gotten great reviews is Pilgrim.  Considered by many around UK to be a future NBA player.

Calipari will not win a Championship at Kentucky!

Bledsoe will be the 7th man in UK! And Calipari still will not win a championship there! For 10 years!

On a related side note, I have said it before - and I’ll say it again - Lance to Europe - dad says it’s to get away from bad environment in the US and its poor basketball fundamentals! Nevermind Brooklyn’s environment, he’s leaving the US! He needs to get away from it all - to heck with NCAA Basketball - Normally Cruddy Athlete Academics (in) Basketball. Tax the tax-exempt NCAA!!!! We need an NCAA Tax Tea Party along the Missouri River!

I do not blame Lance if he goes to Europe - mark it down! Plus, Lance signs with UnderArmour immediately before leaving for Spain! Aren’t we tired of this already????

Bledsoe publicly stated that he does not mind playing with Wall. He already knows that when Wall comes, he will not get as many minutes at PG. John Wall will start wherever he goes.  However, they can co-exist. Miller and Dodson are both big 3's who can shooot, That allows both to play on the court together, plus you have to respect Cousins, Orton, and Patterson from 15 ft. The only reason Duke and Florida are in the mix is becuase of his AAU coach. That will not be enough to sway him there. He wants to play for Calipari, so just deal with it.

John Calipari was my first choice two years ago after Tubby Smith left for Minnesota.  Billy Donovan hinted he will talk to Kentucky and dragged out our coaching search due to NCAA Tournament.  I was very surprised why our AD thought Donovan would leave Florida after winning national championship the previous year and on the verge of winning second straight.  Hey better late than never.  I am glad we finally got a coach who knows Kentucky basketball.  I was very worried after firing Billy Gillispie that no high profile coach would want to come coach at Kentucky.  Actually there was only one right coach for this job who would leave his program for Kentucky and that was John Calipari.  He had to beef up his out of conference schedule in C-USA to get TV exposure which will not be a problem in SEC land.  We get to play on the national scene at least 15 or 16 times a season.  Kentucky will get more TV exposure not with ESPN/SEC signing a mega million dollar contract.
