Eric Bledsoe plans to announce at a Wednesday press conference that he is signing with Kentucky instead of Memphis, sources involved in the recruitment told CBSSports.com on Tuesday.

Attempts to reach Bledsoe for confirmation were unsuccessful.

His press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.

Bledsoe is a five-star prospect from Alabama many believe is the best point guard in the Class of 2009 not named John Wall. There are some questions about whether Bledsoe will become eligible to compete as a freshman because of academics. But under the assumption that he is ultimately cleared, this development ensures John Calipari will open his first season at UK with at least one competent point guard to play beside DeMarcus Cousins, Darnell Dodson and perhaps Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson (both of whom could withdraw from the NBA Draft).

Of course, Bledsoe could also quickly turn into a back-up.

The reason is because Kentucky is considered the leader to land Wall -- the projected No. 1 pick of the 2010 NBA Draft whose presence would allow Calipari to operate with a one-and-done lottery pick at point guard for the third consecutive year. There is still no timetable on an announcement from Wall, and his recruitment could drag well into May. But if Calipari gets him -- and again, almost everybody believes he will -- then UK could have a best-case-scenario line-up that looks like this:

G: John Wall
G: Jodie Meeks
G: Darnell Dodson
F: Patrick Patterson
F: DeMarcus Cousins

Key reserves: Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton, DeAndre Liggins, Darius Miller, Jon Hood, Perry Stevenson

Simply put, that roster would be favored to win the SEC.

It would likely have Kentucky in the top five of most preseason polls.

Nobody can get players better than Coach Cal.
Bledsoe said Coach Cal told him he can't start next... that is true until John Wall signs with UK.Wink
It is looking like UK spent their money well getting Cal!

BUT ENOUGH ABOUT BLEDSOE AND UK...

Anybody been checking out what's happening in Bowling Green KY? Nope, the Tops aren't winning the Champeeeenship next year, but at least 30 wins and another Sweet 16 is a real possibility. Coaches McDonald and Harper are bringing in some terrific talent--unusually good, actually, for a mid-major. Looking very forward to sitting in E.A. Diddle Arena next season.

Answer to Founck.

No doubt in my mind--KANSAS is the favorite to win the title in '10. The experience and the talent and Bill Self. Lethal combo. I think if John Wall goes anywhere, that coach will have his hands full dealing with a gargantuan ego. And that's a chemistry killer. I still think it's an unbelievable roster if Wall shows up at Kentucky, but I can also see Cal sitting this guy when he decides he wants to do his own thing on the floor.

How do you go from NIT to Final Four in one season...has that ever happened before?

I think wall would still sign at U.K.  knowing he would get the majority of the playing time.  Consensus has him 1 and done no matter where he plays.  Bledsoe seems to be a 3 or maybe even a 4 year player so he knows that he will have his time to shine for years to come. Wall would come to U.K. because of coach CAL!!  He knows the reputation he has for getting these young guns ready for the NBA.
So don't be surprised if he signs here.

No better than Sweet 16?  Even considering their difficulties last year, that a rather low estimation.  Trust me, last year was more indicative of the coach than the players and the talent.....I'm not saying they're a Final Four contender, but I wouldn't dismiss them so quickly.  Especially if PP and Meeks return, along with the incoming talent....

Assuming best case scenarios for both Kentucky and Kansas, who is the preseason favorite to win the national championship next year?  I can't wait to see Self vs Calipari part 2.Kansas without a doubt is BY FAR the favorite.  Do you realize how hard it is for a freshman PG to win the NCAA championship regardless how good he is?  Tyreke Evans couldn't do it... Derrick Rose couldn't do it.... What makes anyone think it will turn out differently with Wall or Bledsoe?  Rose was better than John Wall and Bledsoe is a 4 star (according to Scout.com) and the 6th best PG in this year's class.  If UK doesn't sign Wall they are no better than a sweet 16 team, with Wall they may be good enough to get to the Final Four.

All I know is that I am glad we are finally back to the point where coaches ARE trying to steal our recruits, instead of wiping their brows and going "whew, thank God they didn't come here"......aside from a few notable exceptions over the past four-five years, that has ben the case.  I would rather try to keep them than try to get them.
