Eric Bledsoe plans to announce at a Wednesday press conference that he is signing with Kentucky instead of Memphis, sources involved in the recruitment told CBSSports.com on Tuesday.

Attempts to reach Bledsoe for confirmation were unsuccessful.

His press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.

Bledsoe is a five-star prospect from Alabama many believe is the best point guard in the Class of 2009 not named John Wall. There are some questions about whether Bledsoe will become eligible to compete as a freshman because of academics. But under the assumption that he is ultimately cleared, this development ensures John Calipari will open his first season at UK with at least one competent point guard to play beside DeMarcus Cousins, Darnell Dodson and perhaps Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson (both of whom could withdraw from the NBA Draft).

Of course, Bledsoe could also quickly turn into a back-up.

The reason is because Kentucky is considered the leader to land Wall -- the projected No. 1 pick of the 2010 NBA Draft whose presence would allow Calipari to operate with a one-and-done lottery pick at point guard for the third consecutive year. There is still no timetable on an announcement from Wall, and his recruitment could drag well into May. But if Calipari gets him -- and again, almost everybody believes he will -- then UK could have a best-case-scenario line-up that looks like this:

G: John Wall
G: Jodie Meeks
G: Darnell Dodson
F: Patrick Patterson
F: DeMarcus Cousins

Key reserves: Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton, DeAndre Liggins, Darius Miller, Jon Hood, Perry Stevenson

Simply put, that roster would be favored to win the SEC.

It would likely have Kentucky in the top five of most preseason polls.

Excellent point Bones!  Remember back in the day when the Fab Five of Michigan was up and coming.  Fischer wanted to build this type of system too, but he had a hard time getting other top-notch kids to come in.  Cal needs to very careful.  If you get too many young horses in the stable, they're gonna have a problem.  Too many egos to manage, even if for one year.  It really didn't work at Michigan and I can't think of why it would work at Memphis.

If I am a SEC coach, I am selling the fact you'll see less playing time at UK.  And if I'm a kid, I don't want less playing time.  I want to come in, make an impact and do my thing.  Can't do that with this many top-flights.

Bledsoe signing with Kentucky will have no effect on John Wall signing whatsoever. Although College Football is different due to time frame you must wait before going pro. Look at USC football, they have arguably 6 tailbacks and 3 quarterbacks that would start for 95% of the D-1 schools out there. Why do they go to USC? Because as an elite recruit they believe (and Pat Carroll reminds them) that with their freakish ability noone will take away playing time from them. In addition, it would not hurt Wall to practice everyday against another elite PG. I have not seen a lot of his games, pretty much just highlights and the Jordan game, but if he is really the best PG prospect around then he does not care whose job he will take... Side note: Come to Carolina and take over for Larry Drew II Laughing

This much talent begs to "run and gun"....If I'm one of these 10 stars - I say, "h8ll yes!!" Rather play 20 uptempo minutes at top speed and have fun doing and not have to worry about "fouls" and play the game.  This line-up does remind you of the last Pitino squad that really should have been a "3-peat" except for the injury to Derek Anderson that allowed AZ to take it in OT in '97.

That's what we're talking about.  Come on Wall, let's get this done!  Bledsoe, you da man!  Patrick, Jodie, Liggins - this is a squad - go back and look at the film of UK destroying LSU - you'll get a feel for the potential of this type of squad!

,
I won't speculate on who will have their scholarship eliminated, but with all these incoming Freshman, first you have to make sure they all qualify. Plus it's no guarantee that Patterson and/or Meeks are returning. I don't think you'll see much activity until Patterson and Meeks make their decision.

The way Bledsoe handled Jon Hood in a 2 on 2 tourny, Hood may decide to opt out of his LOI b/c he won't want to ride the pine. Plus Hood isn't really the type of player Cal goes after, so don't be surprised if he opts out.

Lot's of players get these guarantees from Cal regarding PT. He consistently brings in 4 & 5 star recruits and expects them to sit the bench, so you'll see a lot of players transferring like they did at Memphis. Hit me back if you need some examples of this.

When you are as talented as Wall, you don't worry about other players and if you worry about them, then maybe you aren't as good as you think.

3 five star recruits  + 2 four star recruits = One talented team on the Floor without any returning players.  Kentucky will be force to reckon with next year.  Although I do think Kansas Jayhawks will be the favorite to win it all in 2009-2010.  SEC is going to crap in their pants when they see Kentucky's lineup on the floor.  I am so glad Billy Donovan did not take this job.  Go Cats

It would have to be KU only because of the experience of the returning players. That said it will be a banner year for both programs

It's official BBN...

I just watched the presser with Eric Bledsoe wearing a UK hat... Now the question I have is who will be leaving the team IF, and I do say IF John Wall makes the decision to attend UK as well next year? Any thoughts from anyone, Uk fan or not?

GO CATS !!!
