Please don't pay attention to scholarship numbers

I've received a few emails about -- and there are various message boards addressing the topic of -- Kentucky's scholarship situation, which is to say, how John Calipari has over-signed this stellar recruiting class that many are calling one of the best in history. All I can tell you is that somehow, someway, it'll end up being a non-issue, and I know this from past experiences.

I was a beat writer who covered Calipari for four seasons before I moved to CBS.

Every year, it seemed like he over-signed.

Every year, it seemed like I had to ask him about it.

Every year, he explained how he doesn't worry about the numbers.

Every year, it was a complete non-issue by the time August approached.

So yeah, the NCAA's scholarship limit for men's basketball is 13. And yeah, the signing of John Wall means Kentucky has 16 scholarship players set to enroll. And yeah, that number will rise to 17 if Jodie Meeks withdraws from the NBA Draft. Make no mistake, those things are all true. But remember, Calipari has been doing this a long time, and there's no doubt he already knows how this will play out.

Eric Bledsoe might never qualify.

Meeks might remain in the NBA Draft.

Two, three or even four current Wildcats might transfer.

If you want a prediction, it'll probably be a combination of those things, plus something else unexpected. But rest assured, it won't matter in the long-term, and that's why I'd advise all fans to stop worrying about it in the short-term.

Please don't pay attention to scholarship numbers

I think this link confirms Parrish was right.  Cal took care of business and freed up the necessary scholarships.

Bye bye guys, leave your membership papers in Big Blue Nation at the door as you exit!

Please don't pay attention to scholarship numbers

The problem I see in the Calipari situation is that he may be pulling a scholarship from someone who is actually working on earning his degree and has spent the past couple of years working on it, for someone who will most likely be a "one and done" and has no intentions of staying in school to graduate.  Besides, the one and dones will be more than able to pay for their education after getting the big NBA contract whereas this may the only chance for the booted out player to earn his degree. I thought they pulled scholarships and would not let athletes play for not making the academics, not the other way around.

13_Galloway He is the best athlete we have or have coming back maybe, this guy is ridiculous.  Cal loves him 6'7"  when he slows the game down in his head he could make somebody sit.

Until the NCAA allows athletes to transfer without having to sit for a year then the university should honor a the athlete's committment for 4 years.  Plain and simple.

Incidentally, Halo27, can you please cry a little louder?  Can you please attack Calipari one more time?  Can you please tell me how you can type so well while laying on the floor kicking and screaming?  Seriously, keep it up man.  Your man crush upon Calipari has turned into a "fatal attraction" and it is funny to watch you implode.

CAL and KY have consistently been a topic of conversation. This is a message board where people converse. I merely contribute the facts. Tongue out

The responses to this article have brought up one question............

In this era of college basketball, why should a school be forced to honor a four year committment to the student-athlete when said athlete can leave at anytime during the four years?  Would it not be fair to put the same responsibilities and restrictions on both parties to the contract?

Actually, this topic is just to stir the pot.  Everyone is hypothesising how Coach Calipari will get to the magical number.  He hasn't done anything yet.  So why don't we wait and see what transpires before we launch an attack upon Calipari's character.

Calipari = scum..........   His true colors have arisen and it's just a matter of time before UK has a scandal.  I'm willing to bet that Cal doesn't last at UK for more than 3 years before trouble starts brewing.

Yeah, Cal is about to do a few guys dirty. Just get rid of them. That's his immoral nature.

exactly....

This is just another very good example as to how Calipari is willing to ignore any moral compass in order to enhance his own self benefit.  Its not about the players, the school, tradition, or anything else. Its about himself.

There used to be a NCAA rule that prevented coaches from over recruiting players like this. It was called the 5 and 8 rule. You couldnt sign more than 5 players a year and no more than 8 in a span of 2 yrs. This rule was done away with back in 2004. The rule had flaws but it did help in maintaining some dignity within the student athlete - university relationship. It was intended to keep coaches from doing exactly what Calipari is doing at Kentucky.

Ginyard's scholarship still counts. But Ty's and Wayne's won't since they are going pro.
