Willard to join Pitino's staff at Louisville

Posted on: June 10, 2009 4:02 pm

Holy Cross head coach Ralph Willard is leaving his current job to become an assistant at Louisville.

"This is obviously one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make in my career, but after much thought and examination I think it is best for the program going forward and for me personally," Willard said in a released statement. "I'm tremendously proud of the student-athletes I have had the privilege to coach here, all they have accomplished and the way they have represented themselves and the school."

Willard will fill the opening at Louisville left by Richard Pitino.

He is now an assistant at Florida.

This development leaves Holy Cross and USC both looking for new head coaches.

Pitino stated Willard has declined his invite to be an assistant four times since his arrival at Louisville. Now with a team that is bringing in a decent recruiting class and has a solid chance to compete in the Patriot League I'm wondering what Willard found so appealing about the job this time around? The timing just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Good move for Louisville but doesn't make sense for Ralph.

This is a nice "hedge" by Louisville...They get Willard on the staff to take over in case Pitino decides to take a leave of absence for "personal reasons".

Holy Cross has a decent future with freshman guard R.J. Evans, that will be a solid job for whoever gets it.
