Meeks not returning to Kentucky

Kentucky junior Jodie Meeks will remain in the NBA Draft.

"I want to thank the fans and the city of Lexington. They have been great and I will always be a Kentucky Wildcat," Meeks said in a released statement. "I feel comfortable with my decision and I’m confident in my ability. My family and I talked over the weekend and decided this was the best decision."

Sources told that Meeks does not have a first-round guarantee, but he has decided to stay in the draft anyway, for better or worse. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 23.7 points last season while shooting 40.6 percent from the 3-point line. He will almost certainly be picked somewhere late in the first round or early in the second.

This development is an obvious blow to John Calipari's first UK team.

With Meeks back, the Wildcats would've been most people's preseason No. 1 team. Now that honor will likely go to Kansas, although Kentucky should still be a favorite to make the Final Four thanks to a roster that is expected to include Patrick Patterson, John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins.

Meeks not returning to Kentucky

Why are Loisville fans on here ranting, you guys still wont have a chance against UK, rare if you do! Pitino still has a losing record against the team he WISHED he never left. Loisville you will always be the other team in KY, figured you would be used to it by now! UK beat Loisville last year right! YEAH! Worst season in 18 years and they still beat Loiusville and TN twice! Sit back and just hope Loiusville gets the "other" side of the bracket in march! Cards fans are as ignorant as the rest of the nations! Funny, check on your own team-oh yeah nothing being posted on them! HILARIOUS!

Also Kansas (especially), UNC, and Villanova should thank Meeks, because this now gives Kansas a preseason #1 and gives UNC a glimmer of hope in December when they come to Rupp. Not sure if Kansas and UK play this year or not. And Villannova should be your #2 team now. But by midseason UK will gel and UK will eventually be your #1 team in the country and they will play Kansas in the championship-Kansas still be behind UK after all is done-just like they and everyone else is in every record there is! Go BIG BLUE! Team of the Century has returned!

Also i have to say this, i have never commneted on another team, never really gave them a look on here. So that alone shows me how concerned and scared the other fans in the nation already are. Say what you guys will, but just ranting about UK shows how much respect and attention the rest of the country shows to the greatest program of all time! Says it all!

Meeks not returning to Kentucky

Biggest mistake of his greedy life! He isnt ready, he wont go in first round and he might last a season or two then we will never here about him, he is pretty much a Jeff Sheppard scenario. He needs one more year, plus he could LEAD UK as the #1 preseason to a NCAA Championship and have his stock rise. He was triple teamed all of last year after the TN game. With this years team he will have nothing but 1-on1 matchups. So his numbers would be about the same if not better with alot more in assists because UK would score around 90-100 points a game easily! Plenty of scoring to go around. What a greedy, spur of the pants decision! FOOL! I'm a UK fan but he is just foolish, Reynolds, Teague, Harangody all stayed because they know they can only improve and these players would have gone ahead of Meeks. Sad situation for everyone, LOSE-LOSE for Meeks and the UK Big Blue Nation! WHAT A MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!! Someone send him this, this is as true as it gets!

Meeks not returning to Kentucky

Wow !!!  This is stunning news. Since Cal took the Kentucky job, it seemed like everything was falling into place for the 2010 season.

After Patterson announced he was returning, Kentucky landed Cousins, and then Wall fell into their lap after the Carolina offer he was hoping for never came.

Without Meeks, Kentucky has no shot at the national championship and would need for every bounce to go their way to even make the Final Four (which is highly unlikely).

The departure of Meeks leaves Kentucky with no three point threat, which will allow opponents to play zone against UK and jam the low post with extra defenders to keep Patterson and Cousins from hurting them.

The effectiveness of the dribble/drive offense is greatly diminished against the zone and even opponents that play man to man know they can drop off their man and stop the dribble/drive when they don't have to worry about deadly perimeter shooters.

Wall will be sensational in the transition game, but he poses no outside shooting threat whatsoever.

As a result, the elite teams (whom UK would have to beat to make a deep NCAA Tournament run) will be focused on getting multiple defenders back to prevent easy fast break baskets, which will force UK to score out of their half court offense (a very diffcult task without effective outside shooting).

With that being said. Kentucky's talent level is such that they should easily win an extremely weak SEC (2009 was pathetic!!!) and have a really good year that is likely to result in a minimum of 25 wins.

However, the loss of Meeks takes away the missing piece of the puzzle that Kentucky needed to g
et them to the promised land in 2010.

Meeks not returning to Kentucky

Why is there something unusual?  The guy is a player.  He said he wouldn't go unless he was told by GMs that he could go in the first round, and because he is staying in the draft then that must mean he believes he will be picked in the first round.  Why does there have to be something else to it?

He has never had problems with his grades, so that is just stupid of you to say.

People would know if he hired an agent, and if he has hired an agent so what, whats that matter, we all know he's staying in and would expect him to hire an agent

Your dumbest statement of all is that Calipari recruited his replacement...LMAO Meeks knows he would've started, he wasn't afraid of some freshman taking his spot

And what does exposure have to with this?  Yeah UK will get a ton of exposure next season, but hey always you think that NBA scouts find out about players by watching them on TV?  If you think exposure has to do with a player and how high or low he is drafted, then why are foregin plyers so frequently drafted top 10?  Trust me, the Pro scouts know who they want and what guys can do.

And this year's class is diminutive compared to next yer's.  Meeks saw that, and decided it would be best for him to stay in this year's draft, and he must hve been told that he will be picked first round, meaning he will have a nice big paycheck...

So, not really sure why you think there HAS to be more to a guy deciding to stay in the draft rather than coming back, anyways, i wish Jodie the best of luck in the pros.

Meeks not returning to Kentucky

First off I don't see Meeks staying increasing his value much. However staying could dramatically reduce his value. If Kentucky fails to live up to their hype or he gets injured his value does nothing but plummit.  Why risk a huge value decrese for a chance at a slight increase? That isn't smart business.

Also remember last time Kentucky had a stud recruiting class and were supposed to win it all? It was a bust and if a lot of those players would've left for the NBA before the season, their value would've been worth more. Not living up to the hype never increases player value and Kentucky's hype is almost a guaranteed let down. They'll do well but I don't think they'll live up to their hype. They haven't lived up to their hype since the last of Patino's players graduated or left for the NBA.
