It's official: Nobody wants Lance Stephenson

Posted on: June 16, 2009 2:00 am

Just hours after Greivis Vasquez announced he is returning to Maryland for his senior season, the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Barker reported that the Terrapins are no longer pursuing Class of 2009 standout Lance Stephenson.

This is worth noting because last month Stephenson's father said it was down to Arizona and Maryland.

But Arizona's Sean Miller hasn't been interested in weeks.

And now Maryland is out of the equation, too.

Which means Stephenson almost certainly holds the McDonald's All-American record for public shuns. Honest to God, I'm not sure there's ever been such a radioactive talent in the history of college basketball recruiting. On one hand, it's hilarious. But on the other hand, it's just sad and shameful that the Stephenson family allowed things to get to a point where countless colleges are so worried about a possible NCAA investigation that they don't believe it's worth it to take a consensus top 10 prospect.

Seriously, how silly does BornReady.TV look now?

Born ready for what, exactly?

A year overseas?

Junior college?

Man, I tell you, some irresponsible adults have sure messed up this kid's immediate future.

Like I said, sad and shameful.

The NBAD league is affiliated with the NBA, its like the minor leagues, so the age limit is still the same. So the NBAD league is not an option.

I am really surprised coach Cal didn't jump on Lance, he is coach Cal's kinda guy, as long as the kid can play he will take them. Cal is a used car salesman and Lance is a thug, they were meant for each other.

Thank you, Canuck!  As a Memphis fan in KY I took shots for the past several years from UK fans.  They called Cal a "used car saleman" and said he had "the best team money could buy."  Now that he is at UK, he's the greatest coach since Rupp.   The truth is that Cal quit recruiting Lance early in the fall of last year.  He didn't like Lance's connections.  He snubbed Lance, Lance did not snub Cal.  If Lance stays and plays in the U.S. many teams may be sorry they didn't stay on his recruiting trail.

Isaiah Thomas should take him

But my bet is the overseas. Not Junior College. I am curious to the NBDL comment another poster left. That would be a good move.

You mean Huggins and his band of thugs haven't offered yet? WVU needs some kind of print. How could this hurt Huggins? I would have thought he'd have been at the front of the line with Calipari and Calhoun.

Hey Gansta, every player Huggy has recruited to WVU has been a class act student athlete.  Can I say that about his time at Cincy, well no, but that is not the case at his alma mater.  Enjoy the beatdowns this coming year, like the one you got in the BE Tourney.  We have no interest in Stephenson, we landed the best JC SG in the Country in Mr. Mitchell.  Good luck Dante Jones handling Devin Ebanks, Kevin Jones, Kelici, Jennings, and Smith.

It's Amazing how a kid could be ruined by all of these adults.

I see a young man who has been hearing that he is the 'Next Big Thing' for a long time. But he has too many people around him giving him the wrong information. BornReadyTV is the worst thing ever for a young player. He has too many PLAYERS in his life. I just pray that this kid is able to live out his Hoops Dreams not his family's dreams.

Hopefully he will be able to get in a college, any college!!!

Kentucky and Coach Calipari would pay those who paid the Stephenson's to make the "Born Ready TV" show to say that they did not pay him, just to get him on the roster.  He really wants Kentucky to start up the season on Perrish's number one ranking.  Calipari another sleaze-ball who is going to get caught by the NCAA soon enough, just like his counterpart on the west coast, Tim Floyd!

It's a shame that this kid has been put in this position by people he's supposed to be able to trust with almost anything.  The person that created is shamelessly whoring this kid's talent like it's something that is unique and some college "has to get it" before somebody else jumps in.

Quotes from his father stating Stephenson is about to pick his college would be somewhat interesting if the school showed any interest in him.  Sadly, it appears that every NCAA institution with even the smallest dose of common sense is avoiding this kid as if the NCAA has already told them, "go ahead, take him, our lawyers are going to be at your front door the day you sign him."

However, I am going to disagree with a large part of the membership posting here when I say I don't blame the NBA for the situation.  Let's step back for a moment and look at the situation.  Has Lance Stephenson showed the skills in HS that would have led to being a pick in the NBA without playing a day of college?  I pay fairly close attention to NCAA basketball and I haven't seen a poll or recruiting list that had Stephenson consistently in the top five that would lead me to believe he could make the jump.  If his numbers are accurate (6'5" 200lbs), it's not like he's wowing the scouts with size and can learn the game once he gets to the pros.  One of the sites I was looking at didn't have him in the top five shooters, scorers, defenders, or overall players at his position.  The change of rules in the NBA since LeBron's arrival have nothing to do with this kid's immediate future.
