Williams gets release from Duke

Mexwayne Williams told CBSSports.com last month that his son, Elliot, planned to play his sophomore season at Duke despite multiple sources claiming that the former McDonald's All-American was on the verge of transferring closer to his Memphis home due to circumstances that could allow him to change schools without penalty.
Apparently, that plan has now changed.
Williams has been granted a release from Duke.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Elliot and his family,” said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. “We fully support him in his efforts to be closer to them during this trying time. He is a good young man with an opportunity to become an outstanding player. We wish him well as he determines his future. He will always be a part of our program and we will always be in his corner."
According to multiple sources, the "family medical reason" that led to Williams' release has to do with his mother. Those same sources said the University of Memphis is the most likely destination for the 6-foot-4 guard, although Ole Miss and Vanderbilt might also be considered "close enough to home" to allow Williams to play next season as opposed to having to sit out a year per normal NCAA transfer rules.
Williams started at Duke toward the end of his freshman season.
He chose Duke out of high school over Memphis, Tennessee and Virginia.

Williams gets release from DukeI would love to have him at Ole Miss...but that would be a crowded backcourt...however, with Warren, Williams, and White, there may not be a better combo of 3 guards in the cuntry

Williams gets release from DukeIf you have a "Hardship" due to serious family illness the NCAA will grant a waiver that allows a kid to play immediately. Elliot Williams fits these criteria. So who's retarded?

Williams gets release from DukeI feel sorry for Elliot and hope his mother makes a full recover but I'm a little excited thinking about how the pieces keep falling into place for Memphis. We need guards for next year. Williams fits the bill plus he can play point. If we get Derrick and Elliot Williams for next year you got to put us in your top 26 Gary. Unless I read something about the release wrong, your retarded, and I'm not kidding, you have to wait a year when you transfer.

Williams gets release from Duke5-6 hours is not 15 minutes. with an illness in the family the knoxville campus doesnt make sense. besides, coach pastner is becoming a players coach. his youth is a big factor and will continue to help him maintain a top 20 program. watch his class for 2010! if he adds joe jackson and tarik black to go with will barton, elliot williams and latavious williams, he will start 5 - 5 star players!!!!!!!!!!

Williams gets release from DukeOne thing you folks need to think about is that this young man is "Tranferring" from Duke, he's not reopening his recruitment. The decision as to where he will be going to school has already been made, so all you UTK and KY homers need to take a break from it. Everyone will know in the next 24-48 hrs where he will go and as Gary said, barring some huge surprise it will more than likely be Memphis. The reason is that his Mom lives in Memphis and she's sick, he want's to be close to his Mom and I don't blame him. My payers and best wishes go out to him and his family regardless of where he goes to school.
