MSU's Varnado to be a walk-on

Interesting bit of information from Kyle Veazey at The Clarion-Ledger .

Apparently, Jarvis Varnado -- the nation's top shot-blocker -- has agreed to be a walk-on this season to ensure Mississippi State gets down to the requisite 13 scholarships. The move will allow newcomers John Riek and Renardo Sidney to be on scholarship, and allow Rick Stansbury to essentially operate with 14 scholarship players (assuming Riek and Sidney are cleared, which is no guarantee).

Varnado's father, Winston Varnado, told Veazey that the family will take out a student loan.

My suggestion: Just borrow the money from the Sidney family.

If they could afford a rent of $4,000-to-$5,000 , surely they could help with a teammate's tuition, couldn't they?

Gary, are there any rules about how the student loan is paid off with regards to his eligibility?

If not, I was wondering why more teams don't have a player take out a student loan then once they leave, conveniently have a booster give the family an amount matching that loan after the player leaves.

Although in this case, I guess Varnado is pretty confident he'll at least get a big enough NBA contract to be able to pay off a year's tuition without too much hardship.

What is Miss State Up To?

This is just another sign that MSU is willing to play very fast and loose with NCAA rules.  There is something going on in their sports program that has created a "we must win now" approach to men's basketball.  I don't know what it is yet, but between the decision to bring in Renardo "Snyder" Sidney and now this, there must be more to the story.  Get some popcorn and stay tuned...this will be interesting to watch unfold.

Where's the Memphis recruit story, Gary? I am sure you have some top notch one liners and metaphors.  So, blog it, post it, do it.  Come on, man.

Really?  I don't see how Varnado surrendering his scholly is playing "fast and loose". What this idiot Gary Parrish fails to mention is Varnado had already told the coaches he was going to surrender his scholly when he threw his name into the NBA draft so the team could actively look for a replacement in the event he went to the NBA.  This had nothing to do with Sidney.  This isn't a John Calipari coached team we are talking about.  Tiger High fans might want to look inside their own program, which is still involved with an NCAA investigation, before throwing stones.  How many times has Rick Stansbury been put on probation or had his teams found guilty of anything?  None.  JV and his family did what was right by the university and it is sad that a some douchebag like Parrish would twist it.

Exactly, Gary, your obsession with Renardo has become a joke. Are you capable of writing about something else. And for the tiger fan with the "fast and loose" comment, if you are a Memphis Tiger, are you f'in serious? Memphis would be able to teach the entire country a thing or 2 about fast and loose.

This had been decided upon over a month ago. Jarvis and his dad are first class people as is Rick Stansbury. Give the kid a break and while you are at it,Renardo Sidney has done nothing wrong and if the NCAA keeps him ineligible, then every signee of every school should have to have their parents checking accounts examined. Now, it the NCAA gets that power, look out because the real crooks like Calipari and Vitale's fair headed coaches in the ACC  and Big East will have to forfeit all their games.

You have not laid all of the facts out on the table.  The Sidney family was not solely responsible for the 4 - 5 k monthly rent payments for the house they were renting.  There were also 3 - 4 other players living in the house and their families were helping pay rent according to reports from Sidney's attorney.  Also, Sidney's grandparents, who are not poor, were also helping the family while he was in California.  Sidney is not some kid from the projects.  Your insinuation in your article is that this family is some poor old family from Mississippi which could not possibly afford to live in California which reeks of racial stereotyping.  There may have been some improprieties and if so, then Sidney should not become eligible to play.  However, to grossly misrepresent and skew the facts makes it seem as though you have a predisposed biased or agenda against Sidney and his family.
