Pastner to add second Top 10 recruit tonight

Josh Pastner is about to land another elite recruit.

This time it's a local product.

"I am committing TONIGHT at the Larry Finch Center at 6:30 pm," likely McDonald's All-American Joe Jackson posted on his Facebook page early Friday. "Come support me and one of the biggest decisions [of] my life. ... Kansas, TN, Memphis. What [is it going to] be?"

For those unfamiliar, the Larry Finch Center -- technically the Larry O. Finch Center -- is the practice facility on the University of Memphis campus. So it should come as no surprise that multiple sources have told CBSSports.com that Jackson will verbally commit to Memphis tonight (over Kansas and Tennessee) and provide what should be a wild scene in his hometown.

"Joe loves the city and he wants to be a Tiger," one source told CBSSports.com. "He was always going to be a Tiger."

Thus, this is hardly a shock. Things have been headed this way for months, honestly, and Jackson spent much of the past week dropping hints on Facebook . Even so, it's still huge news in the recruiting world if only because it means Pastner will now have commitments from two top 10 prospects from the Class of 2010 despite the fact that the 31-year-old former Arizona player is still yet to coach his first game.

Serious question: Has something like this ever happened?

"The closest thing would be John Calipari [getting] John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins [this past offseason before ever coaching a game at Kentucky], but obviously Cal has coached [games] before," said longtime recruiting analyst Justin Young, who runs the National Hoops Report. "But other than that, no sir."

Memphis will now become the nation's only school with commitments from two Top 10 prospects.

One of those commitments is Will Barton, a 6-foot-5 guard from Baltimore.

The National Hoops Report ranks him sixth in the Class of 2010.

The other is obviously Joe Jackson, a 5-11 point guard from Memphis.

The National Hoops Report ranks him ninth in the Class of 2010.

Pastner to add second Top 10 recruit tonight

Joe Jackson will be the straw that stirs the drink for the Memphis basketball program. It’s an exciting time in Tiger town. This Pastner guy can recruit some studs that’s for sure. I was at the Memphis Ole Miss game and Jelan Kendrick and two other big recruits were at that game smiling and having a blast with the Tigers fans that knew who they were. I think Kendrick, Coleman, Barton and Jackson sound like one hell of a team. If I left a player or  two out just fill in the blanks for me.

HEY ...JDZ033,

YOU entered TIGER land and ran you mouth off and got shredded to bits by the Tiger fans. Didn't your parents teach you to speak the truth and to not enter a TIGER din?

Now back to the Tigers....

5 star:  Will Barton---a TIGER
5 star:  Joe Jackson--a TIGER
2 star:  Antonio Barton--a TIGER5 star:  Jelan Kendrick--very possible TIGER

Coach Pastner is on a roll.

And you haters are right about one thing, a great recruiting class doesn't automatically mean a National title, but it sure as hell mean the TIGERS will have a talented team that could make a run at the title. One thing is certain, the TIGERS will be a force with these additions to go a long with BIG  Coleman, Spoon, Sallie, DJ, Garcia, D. Barham, E Williams, and any others that the recruit master PAS brings in....

GO TIGERS GO!!!

What you 'think' is unimportant, as clearly you know nothing about the Tiger program. Pastner did not recruit Rose and was not even on our staff while he was at Memphis. Nor did he learn to recruit from Cal. You are an idiot and should stay out of big-boy conversations until you have the facts.

Joe is a smart cookie. He recognized right away how good of a recruiter Josh is and didn't want to mess around and force Josh to recruit a replacement for him just in case he didn't sign. Well done, Joe. Playing around with folks is all well and good, but you don't want to miss out on being THE starting point guard in the #1 recruiting class in the country for your home town school -- and you won't.

But what's up with all these Calipari posts? And where are all the intelligent UK fans hiding? What's so hard about understanding that all the sleazeball perceptions (and mortgage brokers) that are affixed to Calipari followed him to UK? Even Irish Cubs fans understand that! (Just kidding.)

Who did Pastner learn how to recruit from?  I believe his name is Calipari.  I love how everyone hates on Cal when he leaves.  He left a legacy at Memphis and his disciple(Pastner) has taken the reins and taken off with it.  Everyone says Cal left Memphis as soon as there was a sight of trouble in the horizon.  Let's not forget who the lead man was in the recruitment of Derrick Rose,  I believe his name is Josh Pastner.  Pastner learned a thing or to from Cal so don't think that Memphis will be innocent of recruiting/hiring players in the future.

There is so much wrong with this statement, it's ridiculous. Pastner was only at Memphis this past season, so he didn't help bring Rose to Memphis while he was an asst at Arizona! You’re thinking of sports agency owner, Worldwide Wes that brought Rose to Memphis. Pastner was brought in to Memphis last year b/c he was known as one of the top asst recruiters in the country. Worldwide Wes went with Cal to UK, so the hiring of players followed Cal & did not remain in Memphis.

Pastner did not come to Memphis until after Rose left, you moron.  If you want to comment on something, try to understand it first.

And how many Final Fours did Pastner go to with the players he helped recruit to Arizona!  I believe you can put the old goose egg up there. The problem with this argument is that Pastner wasn't the head coach.  I'm not saying anything against Lute but he wasn't.  How can you say he recruits well but can't coach when you, me or anyone else dosen't know how well he can coach.  There is another old Memphis coach who could recruit like heck but wasn't a good xs and os coach.  His name was Calipari and he took Memphis to the Championship game.  If Pastner keeps recruiting like this and still is a bad game coach we can still go to the final four just like we did with Cal.  So Kentucky fans don't be....."jealous" bec
ause we have a better recruiting class than you do...so far.

A. He is too small to be a one and done.

B. Your entire team consists of one and dones, so how the f are you going to mock us about that. We will get more just like Cal will. I don't see any top ten recruits for you yet, probably because Cal hasn't set up the proper funding in KY yet, God knows no one would get
dog-cussed every day without getting paid. Hope you don't run into a game that required more than pure skill. We all know how great an x's and o's coach he is.

And how many Final Fours did Pastner go to with the players he helped recruit to Arizona!  I believe you can put the old goose egg up there.  Don't get me wrong I think Pastner is going to do a good job, but can we PLEASE not forget that he has never coached a college game, ever.  If Lute Olsen(much better coach than Cal) couldn't take Pastner's recruiting class to the next level then what can a 1st year coach do with them. Granted Arizona had it's own string of problems(coaching changes) that are very under reported which is an entirely different subject, maybe not the fairest of comparisons but I think the  Sweet 16 is as far as they will go for years to come.
