Memphis' Garcia to miss season with torn ACL

An MRI performed Friday showed that Memphis forward Angel Garcia has a torn ACL that will force him to miss the entire 2009-10 season, Tiger coach Josh Pastner confirmed to CBSSports.com.

Garcia tore the ACL in a Thursday workout.

"It was just one of those weird things," Pastner said. "There was no contact. He didn't jump. His knee just gave out on him, and I just feel sick for the young man."

Garcia is a highly rated recruit from the Class of 2008 who was forced to sit out last season because of academics. The 6-foot-11 forward was expected to play a major role this season given the lack of big men on the Memphis roster. Junior college transfer Will Coleman and senior Pierre Henderson-Niles are the only conventional post players currently in the program.

"We've got a good nucleus," Pastner said. "But we don't have any depth."

Memphis' Garcia to miss season with torn ACL

Artutigerfan and Jamamy. I’m speaking for myself and not all Memphis fans and I’m surely not sucking up to anyone. What is the point in the endless dibble? I know Memphis is back and I feel sick for Memphis fans because we were really counting on Garcia this up and coming season. The kid seems cursed and he seems to be a pretty good dude at that. He struck around and did what he had to do and this happens. You just feel for the kid.  The Good news is we still have a top 25 team to start the season.

I like jamammy and he carries the Memphis Torch. If you say anything bad about the Tigers, well all I can say is you got it coming to you boa.

KVSKullball- you rearranged my quote, never said the word garbage. If you’re going to quote me please use my excat words.  I don’t think you are dumping on the Memphis Tiger but your wording seems a little condensing to us. I guess what I’m say never start a post with a disclaimer when it comes to talking about Memphis.

See you in November

Memphis' Garcia to miss season with torn ACL

KatinTexas,

LOL (I guess I musta touched a nerve with that reminder of the 150-95 spank-down we gave UK when Pitino wouldn't pull his first team out after Roy had sent his subs in) I guess that game is one of the things that make you think that KU is as you say...

..........all of your boorish comments are typical KU hogwash........but then again, we are talking about a state that has a collective basketball IQ of about 35......face it Bubba, you are but a pimple on Kentucky's fanny.....a footnote......an insignificant little spec on the college basketball scene........I'm just sad we don't get a chance to thump you in that cracker box of a gym you play in this year......we've got guys on our bench that would start for your little crap team........

Kansas basketball.......small time.......

Kansas basketball fans.......smaller time.......

Thanks for the usual nonsense blather that I have come to expect from those UK fans that are worse than rabid dogs, not all are by a long way, but you definitely live down to that comparison.

Let me school you a little. See if your IQ (which appears to be less than .35) is greater than that pimple you were trying to pop while making as little sense as possible in your post above, while you spurted clouds without clues and no substance or fact....

Who invented the game of basketball, and where did he coach college ball at KU or UK????

Where did UK's best coach play college ball at, and learn how to coach (although he learned the cheating part on his own)???

Where was your current coach a graduate assistant???

Which team, UK or KU has had more major NCAA violations????

Is it KU's coach or UK's coach that has had not one but two final fours vacated????

What comes first alphabetically? KU or UK????

Do you want to keep playing this game??? Do you really believe you're winning?

Which team, UK or KU has won the more recent NCAA title??? Was that the footnote you were referring to, or maybe it was one of our insignificant accomplishments? What does that make the fact that your team hasn't won one in this millennium???

While UK does have more all-time wins than KU, KU is third on the list and not so very far behind. I wouldn't call that insignificant or small time. If your current coach is consistent and leaves UK in a couple of years just in front of NCAA sanctions, and you have to lose a full year of wins, then your team will be in third place, or further back! Are you sweating the details yet???

The dog that barks at night, or howls at the moon and wakes up the 'old man' often gets the owners' boot up his posterior orifice.

Your post makes you sound like an immature 5 year old who knows that his favorite toy is about to be taken away. Let's face it, if you were being serious with your post, you are just an intellectually vacant idiot that doesn't rate the name of moron.

Both programs have plenty to be proud of.

You are not one of the things that UK can be proud of! The UK fans that are like you are what make many other college basketball fans wish the plagues of the Bible upon the UK program, so that you might learn to act with at least a teaspoon, or even just a thimble full of humility. I'm sure you remember that is why God sent the plagues??? To bend Pharoah's stiff neck????? You are at least able to write, even if it is devoid of meaning, so I assume you can read??????? Maybe I'm just wasting time, because you can't understand the written word???

I hope that our teams do meet on the court this year. While it is at least theoretically possible that someone on UK's bench could start on KU's team, I will take our players over yours. And whatever happens this year, probably 4 or 5 of your best players will be gone (if they all qualify) and next year you'll have to almost start from scratch again. Enjoy the OAD merrygo round ride that Coach Cal has brought to UK.

You brought an empty bucket, and a blank gun to this hoe-down. Come back when you can do better.

So you have players on your bench that would start for the #1 team in the country? That's funny! What's even funnier is that you have all that talent and you still can't beat KU. To people that understand basketball, it is clear...it means you lack someone who can coach all that talent.

Just hope you have more than a 9 point lead with 2 minutes to go vs. KU if you meet them in the tourney. We've seen Cal choke under those conditions before and I know UK didn't fork out all the money to acquire the Memphis basketball program just to see Cal get outcoached AGAIN!!!

Please do not think he speaks for all Memphis fans.  It is going to be a long year, but we all knew that was going to happen.  The way I see it is that I would like all of this bad luck happen in one year then it happen year after year.  If anything, it should make our guys become more determined to prove everybody wrong.  Trust me, I would rather lose to kansas because at least most of your fans are gracious about it.

White....

Thanks...

Jamammy is just being Jamammy either you love him or hate him but he is consisted. That is what I like about Jamammy, plus he does all my trash talking for me! I've read several of the Jam man's posts, and I agree, he's consistent. He likes his Tigers, like I like my Hawks. I like the last part of your comment...That he does your garbage for you. When junk is being sprayed around, Point is the most dangerous job, good to let someone else lead the way, or is it 'catch the lead?'.

Jam gives liberally, so I kind of figured that he could also take it back. I'm a little surprised he didn't have another go at me!!! All in good fun!

Good luck to your Memphis Tigers, except of course against my Hawks! To Angel Garcia, I wish him the best, two injuries in two years is terrible luck. I hope he has a full recovery and can get his career back on track. I hope this isn't something that ends his career.

You guys slugged a homerun with Pastner. He did a great job recruiting for Lute at Arizona, and he's off to a hot start at Memphis. Looks like he'll be able to keep it interesting! Life goes on without Calimari, looks like Memphis is in good hands!

Now, when is that first game???? What, still two months away??? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I'm liable to flip my lid before then! Wink

Onetiger,

I enjoy the discussion. I think maybe you read too much into the small stuff....

I really do think that at least a little bit that Pastner really does wish this game would be played when his team is at full strength. I don't see that comment as being disrespectful. And at the same time, as another Memphis fan commented, on the other hand, with all the negatives that have happened around the Memphis program, Pastner is probably really glad to have this marquee game this year.

This might give KU a chance to play some 'small ball' and show off those 9 guards and tweeners they have. I don't think Self is too worried about playing BIG or SMALL! "
You changed my quote to make parts of it bold, I did not. You are the one giving it the negative emphasis. I was commenting about my team playing a different style, to match what Memphis may need to play, with the players they now have available. I really don't think that Self is going to worry about which style KU has to play, we have the bodies to do it. A comment about fact, you supplied your interpretation and inuendo.

"I guess I wouldn't be looking forward to it quite as much if I weren't a Jayhawk fan. (chuckle) Cool"My chuckle is at the end of a comment about my Jayhawks and how good I think they will be. I think that deserves a chuckle. I didn't chuckle about the injured player. You imply that I did.

Sometimes, people laugh at funerals. When they do, I give them the benefit of the doubt and think that they aren't being rude, or have bad taste. They probably have thought of a fond memory of the departed person, and are sharing that positive rememberance. Garcia didn't die, and I'm not making light of his injury. But you are making a mountain out of a molehill. The article about Garcia's injury gave me an opportunity to talk about something I really like, KU basketball, to others that seem to share a passion for bball.

While his injury is regrettable, all of the inferences of taste, bad, good or indifferent are in your mind. If I had made fun of the player's injury, and directly tied my chuckle to his injury, then that would have been in poor taste. But to discuss, even celebrate the success that I think KU will have this season, even with some jesting, even under an article about an injured player, isn't the monstrous bad taste you seem to think. You are looking at it from your perspective, which I find to be too sensitive, while you think I'm not being sensitive enough. I can live with that.

Memphis' Garcia to miss season with torn ACL

While, I hate to hear this as a Memphis fan, I know that the person who hates it the most is Angel himself. Having to sit out two season in a row? That has got to be tough on him. It makes you wonder about his future. Good luck to him and the tigers.
