Memphis' Garcia to miss season with torn ACL

An MRI performed Friday showed that Memphis forward Angel Garcia has a torn ACL that will force him to miss the entire 2009-10 season, Tiger coach Josh Pastner confirmed to CBSSports.com.

Garcia tore the ACL in a Thursday workout.

"It was just one of those weird things," Pastner said. "There was no contact. He didn't jump. His knee just gave out on him, and I just feel sick for the young man."

Garcia is a highly rated recruit from the Class of 2008 who was forced to sit out last season because of academics. The 6-foot-11 forward was expected to play a major role this season given the lack of big men on the Memphis roster. Junior college transfer Will Coleman and senior Pierre Henderson-Niles are the only conventional post players currently in the program.

"We've got a good nucleus," Pastner said. "But we don't have any depth."

JV, you said:

"I bet Pastner is kinda saying to himself...(Wish we could reschedule that game with KU to next year). If Memphis really does have only two able-bodied big guys, then the second half of the game could get really ugly."

"This might give KU a chance to play some 'small ball' and show off those 9 guards and tweeners they have. I don't think Self is too worried about playing BIG or SMALL! "

"I guess I wouldn't be looking forward to it quite as much if I weren't a Jayhawk fan. (chuckle) Cool"

Like i said, the story was about memphis losing a player to an injury, and you chuckle and talk about showing off yall's depth. i didn't ask you to drape yourself in black and bury your computer...in fact, i didn't ask you to do anything. i just pointed out that your post was in bad taste and showed no class. that is the loser mentality i was referring to.

goirish...

Memphis does have good guards (I was, as I said in my last post, just trading smack with the Jam man), as Pastner said, the Tigers do lack depth. His comment was most focused on his Big Man situation, but it is true at the guard positions as well. Memphis has 3 very good guards. KU has 6, with four being very experienced.

When you say that you think that no KU guard will score in double figures, and you mention Collins specifically, I would disagree. Rose was about four inches taller than Sherron, but Sherron took him one-on-one to the rack in the first half of the championship game. It should be a good battle at the guard positions unless Memphis gets worn out.

I doubt if KU will run over the Tigers, but if the game is fast paced then I do expect the Tigers' lack of depth to widen the point spread, because KU is deep across the board. I don't mean that as smack, just as fact. KU has 14 players that could play on most, and would start for many D1 teams.

I agree with you that this game will be great exposure for Pastner's first year. He's off to a great start recruiting, and if he can continue to get big-time games, then Memphis will be able to maintain or even build on the success that Slimo brought back to the program.

I took this article as an opportunity to talk basketball. I'm a really big fan of college bball. I love talking it, and I will do that in kind, if people are respectful, I will be, and if not then I enjoy smacking it as well. I'm excited about KU's team, and I think that KU better play like they are the underdog, or we will get schooled by someone, maybe even Memphis, early on.

onetigerfan,

In my original post, I did not blather on about how we were going to beat Memphis. I said that this might be an opportunity for KU to play with smaller players to match up with the Tigers. Did I imply that I thought KU would beat the Tigers? Sure, but I think most people outside of Memphis will have the same idea this year, and they would have had, whether Garcia was injured or not.

I didn't try to be in bad taste. Then Jamammy responds with some smack talking and I gave it back in kind....

Then I told other Memphis fans that I wasn't trying to be offensive to them. Just trading it with the Jam man.

So, I think you need to look at your "logic, loser mentality."

Garcia is a good player who's had some really bad luck, and I wish him well, but that doesn't mean I'm going to get all sentimental. It is too bad that injuries happen, but they do. KU had a bunch of injuries to deal with last year. I'm not going to drape myself in black and bury my computer, and lock myself in my room.

KVS,
I agree that KU will dominate us this year, but it's not going to be your guards. We are thin in the frontcourt with or without Garcia, but if there's one thing we have, it's guards that can defend. I'd be surprised if any KU guards score in double figures (Collins especially). Doneal Mack & Willie Kemp will give him fits all game b/c they are just as quick as Collins but bigger & longer. But the difference is Aldrich & Morris--those two could easily have 30pts a piece.

In reality, most Memphis fans know it will be a great building block for the season if we only lose the game by single digits. The only way we stay in the game is if Elliot Williams & Roburt Sallie shoot lights out from 3. Back to your original statement about regretting this game--if anything we need this game just for the TV exposure & national attn. We may get blown out but at the end of the year, this game is going to help us more than beating the crap out of Houston Baptist.

KV...point is that parrish writes a piece about a player suffering a season-ending injury, so you blather on about how bad y'all are gonna pound memphis now. lots of class there, bud. maybe next you could post how you hope a few more players go down on some other teams to make the path to a championship a little easier. same logic, same loser mentality.

 virgosports,

I agree with you. I think that Pastner is and will get good recruits and have a really good team, real soon, I mean really soon. I think that a series between KU and Memphis would have great appeal to fans and to networks. St. Louis is a pretty good central location (although Missouri isn't what I would call exactly a 'neutral' location for anything Kansan), and a home and home series would be a great regional matchup. I'd much rather KU play a tough matchup like Memphis rather than some north-east-west state U.

Also, I didn't want other Memphis fans to think I'm dissing Memphis with my comments to Jamammy. He slings the muck around a little, so I was just giving him a bucketful back at him!

jamammy,

I found your comment to be quite entertaining!
...I am predicting that you can go eat one for lunch, sausage boy.
Thank you for that nice polite end to a warm and fuzzy, as usual, comment Jam man.

You might ask Pitino why he no longer wants to play KU. A 150-95 stomp-down did the trick when he wouldn't put his subs in, then Roy said, OK, you wanta play hard, we'll play hard (a little Bruce Willis movie quote for you) and put his first team back in.

KU has that kind of team again. Tell your team to bring what they got, but if they don't want to be drop-kicked over the St. Louis arch, better know how to say 'uncle'.

When our guards are done chewing your bubble-gum guards into little spit wads, with shoe-prints all over their backsides from running over them, then our big guys will swat anything that you can bring, back to your bench. LOL
We have dudes with hops and arms like 4 feet long
Arms like 4 feet long....? Tell them not to scrape their knuckles while running down the court. We've got guys that are bigger, we've got more of them, and they can run pretty well, especially as they won't have to play without much rest against guys that are bigger than them.

See, two can play that game. I got more where that came from! Bring it! ha ha! Trash talk is sooooo much fun when conversing with a trash-can! It can always take more! I'm here to give it.....

Cal At Fault

It's Cal's fault of course!...Everything else is Calipari's fault so why not go ahead blame it on him.

If you can't see the sarcasm in this, then you must be a UK fan.

Memphis' Garcia to miss season with torn ACL

As a Memphis fan, I would agree that the Kansas game will be very tough given lack of any depth that Memphis has, but it will be a good learning experience for some of the young team members.  I do hope Memphis and Kansas cosider starting a 1-1 or continue neutral site games because Memphis is expected to have a top 10 class in 2011.
