Mason out at least four weeks at St. John's

I recorded a video with CBSSports.com's Jason Horowitz this morning in which I explained how the key to Norm Roberts keeping his job at St. John's might be the return of Anthony Mason Jr. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Mason is out four-to-six weeks with a hamstring injury, and don't you just feel sick for Norm Roberts?

"We're disappointed for Anthony because we know he wants to be out there," Roberts said. "We have to give him time to recover so when he joins us on the court, he'll be 100 percent."

Mason, you might remember, averaged 14.0 points per game as a junior in the 2007-08 season, but played only three games last season before an MRI revealed that he suffered a torn peroneal tendon in his right foot against Boston College. The 6-foot-7 forward missed the rest of the season, and received a medical hardship from the NCAA to play this season. But he injured his hamstring early last month and reaggravated it this past weekend.

Now the school is taking a cautious approach.

St. John's will start the season without its best player.

"We'll obviously be very happy and excited to get Anthony back," Roberts said. "He is such a versatile scorer, and his ability to be our main scorer on any given night makes our team that much deeper."

they run the same plays in a 4th grade program as they do in college....flex, pick and rolls, traps, presses...but ur to used to the mj's and kobe's of this era..who would want the ny kids?...mostly hot doggers or toublemakers---u def dont win w those...1 yr and done guys....duff get real maybe he sat the kid for not moving the ball and launching 3's---thats called discipline...but if u knew the game and coached you would know that!
yankee1----u want calipari---hmmm i got a name and 3 letters for u---derrick rose...S.A.T.----leaves another program w penalties! so caliapri"s resume includes marcus camby's and lou roe's academic problems at umass, he kept the nets in disarray and we just went over the memphis problems...and we didnt even mention all the controversial  hirings of friends and family members of recruits into those programs..u can have that cheater...know ur facts before u speak son!
and then heres norm roberts trying to build a new ship instead of just patching the hole in the hull left by fraschilla and jarvis...

Come on, do you really believe what you are saying?
Norm CANNOT coach. It doesn't matter how saintly he is if the X's and O's are CYO level. There are plenty of guys who don't cheat that can coach very large circles around this clown.
He has talent this year, but will singlehandedly lose games with his moronic substitution patterns. "And Hardy is really heating up. That's his third straight three ... and Norm is signaling him to the bench."

I agree with godzilla, no way should Norm Roberts be fired.  I like the attitude of a typical "Yankee" whether or not he is truly a yankee that thinks you can "Buy" anything and everything.  Norm Roberts is doing the right way and is "Slowly" turning around the St. Johns program.  You may not like the "Pace" in which it is being done, but Norm Roberts is trying to turn around a basketball program that has no support of an athletic department that is receiving funds and money from a football program.  There are more intangibles involved in just winning and losing when you coach at a school like St. Johns.  Depaul and Seton Hall are also schools in the same boat.  Until the Athletic Department and the Chancellors pony up and take responsibility for the "Sole Revenue" generating sport to single handily carry those departments, they never succeed.  They need to update their facilities and pour money into the program to help attract those New York recruits that are leaving for Kansas, Zona, and other schools.  Don't blame Norm Roberts because that is the easy path and a complete "Cop-Out".  I would like to see the National Media focus on these Athletic departments rather than making the coach a "Scapegoat" on everything.

Roberts should be fired. he has not recruited any blue chip NYC players, the players are constantly going to other programs. St.Jonwas an elite program at on point of time. i wish they would have went after calipari before he went to memphis. its definitely time for Norm to go!!!!!

no way should roberts be fired...its taken some time but the program is cleaned up and he wil eventually get it turned around...it will never be the days of berry,  mullin, jackson, sealy etc but id rather see a program like this succeed than the programs of big mouths like gonzo, pitino, calapari and huggins...but i guess being a good guy doesnt make $$$$---NY used to be the best for hoops!
