Harrison Barnes committed to North Carolina on Friday, choosing the Tar Heels over Duke, Iowa State and three other schools. The 6-foot-6 wing from Ames, Iowa is widely considered the top prospect in the Class of 2010 because of his physical gifts and the impressive way he handles himself both on and off the court.

Barnes informed UNC coach Roy Williams and the current Tar Heels via Skype.

“I just wanted to let you know I’ll be joining you guys next year on the squad," Barnes said. "I can’t wait.”

Barnes' commitment ensures North Carolina will have another monster class; MaxPreps.com already had it ranked eighth nationally, even before Barnes signed. Meantime, the development is a tough blow to Iowa State, which had hoped to land the hometown product. Barnes' mother, Shirley Barnes, actually works at ISU. But the local connection wasn't enough to keep Barnes from signing with North Carolina.

"HB is a great kid," Iowa State coach Greg McDermott Tweeted shortly after the announcement. "I wish him well. I am disappointed just like our fans. Time to focus on a group of guys that love Iowa State! "

Woot! Ol' Roy pulls out another one!

So Gary, seriously, what's this other reason you changed your prediction to UNC?

Chapel Hill is a beautiful campus!  And the basketball tradition is up there with the best in the nation.  Add that to 2 National Titles in the last 5 years and it is pretty easy to see why.  And it is NOT cold in NC.  Of course, that is coming from someone who lives in Vermont!

Question for UNC fans... How did it become the USC of college basketball (as far as recruiting goes)? I understand why kids go to USC in football (always warm, its California, beach, LA and all the hot coeds you can handle), but NC seems cold. I'm sure there are some nice coeds, but they couldn't compare with USC or a UF (got to be shameless here). Even with the cold weather, you guys sure do seem to get the cream of the crop from everywhere. Congrats on the latest stud signing.

Why did Gary pick UNC as the place for Barnes?  Everyone else was doing it and he didn't want to be left out.  He said Duke all along, but then when it became clearer and clearer UNC was the choice, changed his pick and took some credit for doing so.

This isn't the only pick he will be changing before the basketball season concludes.Wink

With Collins, Aldrich, likely Henry, and perhaps Taylor all heading from the Jayhawks to the NBA next year, we'd have loved him in Kansas.  Seems like a great kid and obviously a wonderful talent.  Congrats to the Heels.

I saw both versions, and the only difference is that Gary restructured the piece to include the tweet from the ISU coach.  I'm still awaiting why Gary thought UNC would be the pick.

UNC just got one hell of a player. Wish him nothing but luck with them. Seems like a great kid.

Now Gary... you gonna share with us why you changed your prediction to UNC? Obviously, you were right....
