Here's a new entry for the always evolving College Basketball Trivia Book ...

Q: What was the first ranked team to lose in the 2009-10 season?

A: No. 18 Mississippi State.

Yep, the Bulldogs lost their home opener Friday night to Rider.

Final score: Rider 84, MSU 74.

The key was Rider making 10-of-16 3-point attempts (62.5 percent). That's not as good as Arkansas' Rotnei Clarke, obviously. But it was still good enough to push the Broncs to a nice road win over the SEC Western Division favorite.

In a related note, Ole Miss is now the SEC Western Division favorite.

Rider pulls season's first notable upset at MSU

I'm not suprised by this win at all. When Rider is on their game, they can play with anyone. The game Siena lost last year to Rider was pretty similar. Rider lit up the three's and Siena couldn't keep up!

What I'm suprised by is some of the reactions I've read from MSU fans and players... comparing the loss to Syracuse exhibition loss to LeMoyne.

1. Mississippi State isn't exactly a basketball powerhouse
2. Rider and the MAAC have beaten BCS schools numerous times.

If this had been Siena last night, instead of Rider, they would be singing a different tune because of the past 2 NCAA's... But, as I see it, Rider has been only a half step behind Siena in the past couple of years and easily could have been the team representing the MAAC...

The bottom line is the top teams in the MAAC can compete and win against teams in the power conferences. They might not be able to knock off Kansas or UNC... but, they are easily as good as a the middle of the road SEC, ACC or Big East schools... The MSU's, Ohio States, and Vanderbilts of the world really shouldn't be suprised anymore when they're challenged or Beaten by a MAAC school. The gap between the BCS type conferences and the Mid-Majors is far more narrow than they would like to admit!

Yes, what's the story on the Augustus kid? He might only play 14 minutes next game if I happened to be his coach.

GARY - real score was 88-74.  And how do you NOT mention Augustus calling out Stansbury after the game by saying they were outcoached.  do your homework, son.

Rider pulls season's first notable upset at MSU

While yes this is an upset it is not one of catastrophic proportions.

Rider is a pretty decent team.  Any preseason polls that go out to 100 have these guys in there, and for good reason.  They are a solid NIT caliber team, maybe even NCAA's if they can hang with Siena and Niagara.  Wins like this certainly add credence to that possibility.

For Miss St. this isn't going to hurt that bad in the long run.  They are still miles ahead of anyone else in the SEC west.

Rider pulls season's first notable upset at MSU

This is a great win for the MAAC Conference as a whole.  They have three really good teams at the top in Siena, Niagara and Rider.  They have a good shot at getting two bids this year if every team plays to there potential.  Of course the Niagara loss to Rider is not a great start, but these three teams should all put together solid seasons that could make way for two MAAC teams to make the big dance and definately make for one exciting MAAC Conferencea Tournament, big win for the MAAC as a whole.

Whoa, what happened to Oregon St. tonight?  They didn't really lose to Texas A&M Corpus Christi 67-43, did they?  That's got to be wrong.

Rider pulls season's first notable upset at MSU

Dana O'Neil, your colleague, hinted that this might happen.  She's been touting Rider since the pre-season.
The only thing close to this tonight was Seton Hall who needed a buzzer beater to get past St. Peter's.... St. Peters!  Keon Lawrence's departure will be felt.
