Josh Pastner added a fourth top 35 prospect Monday when Tarik Black committed to Memphis.

MaxPreps.com ranks Black No. 35 in the Class of 2010.

The 6-7 forward joins Will Barton (ranked No. 3 at MaxPreps.com), Joe Jackson (ranked No. 11 at MaxPreps.com) and Jelan Kendrick (ranked No. 16 at MaxPreps.com) as high school stars who have pledged their allegiance to Memphis. Combined with fellow signees Chris Crawford, Antonio Barton and Hippolyte Tsafack, they comprise what is almost certainly now the nation's No. 1 recruiting class and perhaps the best recruiting class for a first-year coach in the history college basketball.

Pastner is in his first year at Memphis.

He's 1-0 heading into Tuesday night's game against Kansas.

Worth noting is that Jackson, Kendrick, Black and Crawford played together with the Memphis Magic this summer. They won the prestigious Adidas Super 64 tournament in Las Vegas. The other notable player from that team is Adonis Thomas, a top 10 prospect in the Class of 2011 who plays at Melrose High in Memphis. He's also considering Memphis (along with Florida, Ohio State, North Carolina and a host of other schools).

Pastner adds fourth top 35 prospect at Memphis

If you don't know Pastner, you should be ashamed of your comment.
He is a freak of nature and is squeeky clean.
He has signed 6 top 75 recruits because he is straightfoward with the kids, doesn't cuss them and is the most positive reinforcement these kids have ever seen.  Stay tuned-he will be the most sought sfter coach in America in three years.

Pastner adds fourth top 35 prospect at Memphis

Well, today I'm here in praise of Josh Pastner and also to toot my own horn just a bit.  Quickly the toot: I was promoting J.P. for the position from the opening bell.   I can verify that with previous postings here and by confirmation of emails sent to Gary Parrish's close associate Geoff Calkins.

With respect to Coach Pastner, I sent G. Calkins a message this morning stating that I observed three things that already tell me that J.P. is certifably a big time winner.

1.  The super WOW recruiting class that Coach P. has assembled on short notice under the most difficult circumstances speaks for itself.

2.  A photo appearing in last Fridays edition of the Memphis Commercial Appeal showing J.P. in sweats running a practice session.  In that photo Josh Pastner displays that air of supreme confidence that winners possess.

3. The blowout victory over "cupcake" opponent Jackson State in Coach Pastner's first official game.  That is the way that well coached and well prepared teams handle lesser opponents.

Let me conclude by seconding the sentiment previously posted in this string.

IT'S GREAT TO BE A MEMPHIS TIGER!!!!   WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!

No, there was info about Pastner, that reporter just did not care to research it...Pastner has literally been coaching since his teens.....His Dad was a highly respected AAU Hoops Coach in Texas and gave the reins to his son upon retiring...Pastner won the national title with his team @ approx 21 yrs old & has HUGE recruiting ties as a result of earlier years...Not to mention he worked under Coach Olson for close to 10 years and look @ the players that he not only helped find, but mentored, coached and befriended.... THe Arrizona Wildcats have pumped more players to the NBA since 1989 then virtually ALL College programs...Memphis has a future STAR in Pastner...I'm rooting for him to do well @ Memphis...

Gary, what are the odds that Memphis ever gets invited to join the Big East?  I know the concerns about distance and an excessive number of teams on the basketball side, but are those really big deals?  What's the status?  I've read more about it lately regarding the football program, but it seems nothing ever happens.

Pastner was only on the Squid's staff for a year.  I don't think that qualifies as "a very long time."  I like the rest of your post, though.

michaeledmunds, the bit I wrote about Dana Kirk and Keith Lee is not a false charge.  I lived in Memphis at the time this became public. Gary Parrish could confirm it.  For that matter, here's an article on it:

WOW!!! Has any first-year, first-time head coach done a better job of recruiting than this? I can't think of any! Hopefully his coaching ability matches up. Kansas and all of the other big guys will get us this year, but look out after that!

when you put together these two elements 1) the best local talent from one the national hotbeds for high school basketball and2) the best nationally, is the making for a national championship.
