This is how it's forever going to be, UK fans

Bob Knight spoke at a fundraiser Thursday night.

Predictably, he managed to make national headlines.

"We've gotten into this situation where integrity is really lacking and that's why I'm glad I'm not coaching," Knight said. "You see we've got a coach at Kentucky who put two schools on probation and he's still coaching. I really don't understand that."

This is the place where Kentucky fans would like me to tell you that John Calipari has never been directly implicated in anything, and the place where fans of every other school, particularly Memphis fans, would like me to tell you that Knight speaks the truth, and God bless him. But I'm not interested in sparking that debate because the Calipari debate has been going on for months, if not years, and it never reaches a conclusion.

If he coaches your school, you love him.

If not, you think he's a lying cheater.

There's almost no in-between.

And this is how it's going to be forever, UK fans, and why it was clear -- even before Knight said what he said -- that any success Calipari has going forward will be tainted regardless of whether it's really tainted. Until the day he retires, the majority of observers will believe, fair or not, that every recruit Calipari gets is a product of his relationship with William Wesley even if Worldwide Wes has never met the recruit. All SATs will be assumed fake even if they're legit, all future pros will supposedly have agents even if they do not.

There's no sense in fighting that perception.

There's certainly no way of changing that perception.

On Thursday night, it was Bob Knight taking a shot at Calipari.

In March during the NCAA tournament, it'll be every columnist in America.

That's what the $30 million Kentucky spent on Calipari has brought the school -- a coach who will lure lots of great recruits, win countless big games, and hang banners while people ask whether Kentucky really expects those banners to remain after an inevitable NCAA investigation. Then Kentucky fans will yell about how Calipari wasn't tied to anything. Then everybody will roll their eyes and laugh. And around and around we go.

Memphis didn't have Wall,

Get your facts straight.

Kentucky was on Wall's list before calipari came.

Is there a bias against UK??? You bet there is. UK is always portrayed as the big evil in the media. UK fans are used to it, while all the other schools and coaches who transgress are forgiven, UK never is. No matter who UK would have signed as a coach to succeed Gillispie the haters would have questioned their integrity too. You Kentucky fans really need to get over yourselves. When Cal was at Memphis last year, and the year before, and the year before that, we had to put up with the same stuff you guys are hearing now. It doesn't have a thing to do with it "being Kentucky".

I don't recall UK being portrayed as the big evil when Tubby was there. Now that Cal is there and you guys are getting the same grief that ALL of college basketball and media gave Memphis for the last few years you say it's because your UK and everyone is just jealous. Think again....it's because it's Cal....he has been villified for years. If When he leaves all this will follow him.

As for recruits lining up to come to UK because it's UK, where were they last year and the year before when Memphis was getting all the recruits? Don't fool yourselves, you'll get recruits because it's Cal, not because it's UK. That's what you got this year. They were all coming to Memphis to play for Cal, then followed him to UK. The UK name may have lured Cal away but it had absolutely nothing to do with the recruits you have this year....they were going to go to Memphis....or wherever Cal was. If Cal had went to almost any school most of them would have followed.

Actually, Western Kentucky had it's semi final loss in 1971 vacated because Jim McDaniels had contact with an agent.

As far as the argument Cal gets all the good recruits.. well hell, isn't that the goal of any of the top coaches? K, Roy, you name 'em, they all look to get the best they can.
I'm not truly sold on Cal's recruiting methods, but I can tell you it is a heckuva lot easier to recruit for UK than it was for Memphis or Umass. The guy has won a lot of games, and not always on talent alone. He's also lost BIG games when seemingly having a lock on talent.

I agree with Gary completely.  I was a huge Calipari fan until he screwed UMass.  He was definitely the one tht built UMass into one of the premiere programs in the early-mid nineties and they havent been the same since.  Calipari definitely gets most of the credit, but because of him they also went on probation.  Now it is going to happen to Memphis again.  Calipari and Kentucky deserve each other.  Both are cheaters with past histories.

SECcatFAN,

You just transitioned into an argument I was going to make here.

Does anyone else find it amusing when people are coming on here saying how Tubby Smith was awesome?

Tubby and UK fans were razzed and ridiculed during his entire tenure, why? Tubby cant win a National Championship with his own players, Tubbys players cant shoot, Tubby will win 20 games a year but doesent win the important ones.......

That crap was spewed by opposing fans and by "top" analysts such as Dickie V. You have to ask yourself why did everyone want Tubby to be at UK when all they did was bash them when he coached there? Because noone wants to see us succeed in the media.

The only time fans of other teams or Sports media types are happy is when Kentucky isnt in the National limelight.

Face it haters, UK is the New York Yankees of College Basketball. People either love or hate them because they win more often than anyone else (can you say 1,998 wins) and most people just don't like winners. People love to cheer on the underdog, I get it.

However to all the UNC posters who hate Calipari for "cheating", take a look at your own coach who left Kansas amid a scandal where 2 boosters were giving graduation gifts to players with Williams having full knowledge. KU lost scholarships in 2006 from sanctions handed down from the NCAA and for the most part, there was no firestorm of controversy for Roy Williams. Why??? Does UNC receive preferential treatment from the media?

Is there a bias against UK??? You bet there is. UK is always portrayed as the big evil in the media. No matter who UK would have signed as a coach to succeed Gillispie the haters would have questioned their integrity too.

Boosters are hard to control, especially boosters with money, just ask Roy Williams. Oh that's right, he had already left KU, so you'd better ask Bill Self who had to deal with the loss of scholarships.

Go Coach Cal and UK.

i do not see how anyone can disagree with bobby knight's comments they are true ..2 times coach cal has left a program on probation that was foreced to vacate wins and money and titles ..there is no way anyone can supoort him including himself..he is what he is a coach that knows how to circumvent the rules win and then lose the same games he wins 2 years later that takes talent...lol..how anyone can possibly say other wise is crazy ..we all know in 2-3 years kentucky will get to final 4 or maybe 2 ..they will not win cause coach cal's game management is not as good as his tricky ways ..then he will suddenly have another "dream" job and kentucky will be stripped of the wins ..but u know coach cal will keep the money..lol
