This is how it's forever going to be, UK fans

Bob Knight spoke at a fundraiser Thursday night.

Predictably, he managed to make national headlines.

"We've gotten into this situation where integrity is really lacking and that's why I'm glad I'm not coaching," Knight said. "You see we've got a coach at Kentucky who put two schools on probation and he's still coaching. I really don't understand that."

This is the place where Kentucky fans would like me to tell you that John Calipari has never been directly implicated in anything, and the place where fans of every other school, particularly Memphis fans, would like me to tell you that Knight speaks the truth, and God bless him. But I'm not interested in sparking that debate because the Calipari debate has been going on for months, if not years, and it never reaches a conclusion.

If he coaches your school, you love him.

If not, you think he's a lying cheater.

There's almost no in-between.

And this is how it's going to be forever, UK fans, and why it was clear -- even before Knight said what he said -- that any success Calipari has going forward will be tainted regardless of whether it's really tainted. Until the day he retires, the majority of observers will believe, fair or not, that every recruit Calipari gets is a product of his relationship with William Wesley even if Worldwide Wes has never met the recruit. All SATs will be assumed fake even if they're legit, all future pros will supposedly have agents even if they do not.

There's no sense in fighting that perception.

There's certainly no way of changing that perception.

On Thursday night, it was Bob Knight taking a shot at Calipari.

In March during the NCAA tournament, it'll be every columnist in America.

That's what the $30 million Kentucky spent on Calipari has brought the school -- a coach who will lure lots of great recruits, win countless big games, and hang banners while people ask whether Kentucky really expects those banners to remain after an inevitable NCAA investigation. Then Kentucky fans will yell about how Calipari wasn't tied to anything. Then everybody will roll their eyes and laugh. And around and around we go.

I bleed Blue and have followed UK since the Rupp days. I didn’t like Pitino but respected his ability. Ditto with coach Krzyzewski (Knight’s twin) only K is probably the most fundamental BB coach in America and he does it with mostly white boys. Coach Cal came to national attention at Umass and vice versa.  Other coaches just couldn't handle this young arrogant coach who won games and knew what he was talking about when he spoke. Other coaches couldn't stand him stealing their thunder. John Chaney couldn't hold back a black stereotype when he threatened to kill Cal at a news conference. Such is the type of emotions Cal has evoked as a coach.

I had no opinion of Cal because we didn't have -up to second- analysis then. Later I just assumed the hype about Cal was true since he was constantly painted as a cheater-- BUT, if he was guilty, then why didn ---Parrish's article is exactly right --- I still don't have an opinion of cal because he has won no NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.  I am and was on the bandwagon to rid U.K. of Billy G. and am acceptable of Cal as our coach.

The main theme to emerge from this is that just as Knight was rehabilitating his public persona he blows it again. Couldn't he find a young boy (maybe a grandson) to choke, kick, or verbally abuse. Unlike Charles Barkley he was a role model and a sorry one at that.  Just when I was beginning to be able to listen to his BB analyzing, I will again change the channel when he is on.
This isn’t about Cal. It’s about Knight, Jealousy and “Gospel according to ME”!  (Knight the almighty).    I give this round to Coach Cal.

Until Cal wins a NC might want to lay off Knight, the man's record speaks for itself and his integrity, and his graduation of his players. I am no Hoosier fan, but those are the facts. If and when Cal wins a NC, then we can finish this converstion.

Knight has 0 class

Is Bobby Knight really lobbing integrity grenades at people??? Ha! That's good comedy.

Not that he ever had any class, but NCAA coaches publicly making accusations is childish and unprofessional.

I would say that is true regardless of who BOBBY KNIGHT??? is criticizing.  What a joke.

Gee, while we're on the subject of "pricelss payments", let's talk about YOUR coach and the abortion payments he made and all the hotel bills during his affair and the bribes to keep his mistress quiet.  oh, we're talking about UK and not UL?  huh, that's too bad.

First of all Calipari was never implicated in any of the violations. Second of all most of the shady characters in sports are not the coaches it is the Boosters and Agents and Schools who make millions and millions off of winning big time programs where a player gets a 150,000 dollar education. The schools make huge money off these big athletic programs. All you UK haters out thier are just jealous because Cal is not coaching your team. I guarantee if he stayed at Memphis we would not have seen any of this. Memphis made up this story to discredit him as well as Umass because they were pissed he left. If he was a cheater he would have been caught by now. The fact is any big time coach at any school will be called a cheat if he is having outstanding success.

"If he coaches your school, you love him. If not, you think he's a lying cheater."

Should actually read, "If he coaches your school, you love him...until he leaves you on probation and you KNOW he's a lying cheater."

UK Fans: We're hated, that's ok

Not many people hate Northwestern St. or Alcorn St or Southeast Delaware Tech College of Pharmacy. So why are we hated? Because we have a great program, success leads to hate.  Instead of being bothered by people trying to break down every UK fan we should just enjoy the fact that we're Kentucky.  No one outside the Big Blue Nation understands that its not just about the actual game but that UK basketball is about all of us, our family's and our pride for Blue and White.  We should feel lucky that we have such a great program to be behind.  With that greatness, people will always try to hate us.

No doubt.

I love Bob Knight and he had his time.  Hell, he even gave UK the game/game series (though of course he thought they'd be gimmie's) when the Cat's were on suspension during the Sutton debacle. His time is gone and his military view is not necessary in our advanced society (if you want to call it advanced given the likes of Palin and thinking of Tea bagging politicos).

As long as he keeps UK clean and brings the championships - his past won't mean anything at UK.

I want to go on record now and say, "No. We won't. There will NEVER be any major infractions by UK under Coach John Calipari."

You can quote me on that.

How do I know that?

Well, there's a $35 million contact that garuntees it. We've suffered it before under Eddie Sutton and Kentucky will never put itself in that position EVER again. Hence the early reporting of minor infractions by John Wall by the UK aministration. Remember, it resulted in Wall having to sit out an exhibition and a season game.

We're all over that. Don't sweat it. You'll have to find something else to hate one ... or else you're going to be saying this same crap year and after year. And 10 National Titles down the road you'll still be saying ... "one day they're going to get dirty ole coach cal".
