This is how it's forever going to be, UK fans

Bob Knight spoke at a fundraiser Thursday night.

Predictably, he managed to make national headlines.

"We've gotten into this situation where integrity is really lacking and that's why I'm glad I'm not coaching," Knight said. "You see we've got a coach at Kentucky who put two schools on probation and he's still coaching. I really don't understand that."

This is the place where Kentucky fans would like me to tell you that John Calipari has never been directly implicated in anything, and the place where fans of every other school, particularly Memphis fans, would like me to tell you that Knight speaks the truth, and God bless him. But I'm not interested in sparking that debate because the Calipari debate has been going on for months, if not years, and it never reaches a conclusion.

If he coaches your school, you love him.

If not, you think he's a lying cheater.

There's almost no in-between.

And this is how it's going to be forever, UK fans, and why it was clear -- even before Knight said what he said -- that any success Calipari has going forward will be tainted regardless of whether it's really tainted. Until the day he retires, the majority of observers will believe, fair or not, that every recruit Calipari gets is a product of his relationship with William Wesley even if Worldwide Wes has never met the recruit. All SATs will be assumed fake even if they're legit, all future pros will supposedly have agents even if they do not.

There's no sense in fighting that perception.

There's certainly no way of changing that perception.

On Thursday night, it was Bob Knight taking a shot at Calipari.

In March during the NCAA tournament, it'll be every columnist in America.

That's what the $30 million Kentucky spent on Calipari has brought the school -- a coach who will lure lots of great recruits, win countless big games, and hang banners while people ask whether Kentucky really expects those banners to remain after an inevitable NCAA investigation. Then Kentucky fans will yell about how Calipari wasn't tied to anything. Then everybody will roll their eyes and laugh. And around and around we go.

I'm a Memphis fan.
I am very disappointed watching the entire Memphis recruiting class play for KY besides Will Coleman.  The only player that didn't follow him went to Kansas and they are the only team Memphis has lost too.
I don't dislike Coach Cal. How can the Memphis fans who loved Coach Cal when he was at Memphis now carrier on about how bad he is now.  I'd say you have sour grapes.   I think he has gotten a bad rap at both UMass and Memphis.  He rebuilt Memphis which was terrible when he arrived.  He didn't leave much standing but we have enough baring injures to win weak CUSA and make it to March Madness.

I believe I can speak for KENTUCKY fan's everywhere when I say:

"WE'RE GOOD!"  We're happy with Cal...we're happy with Wall,
Patterson, Cousins, Bledsoe, and the rest of our UNDEFEATED
team, at this point.

At least, we're not playing a TOTAL list of patsies like Kansas.

Cal wanted to coach at Kentucky...WE ARE ALL HAPPY TO HAVE HIM
there/here.  If he screws up down the road, then Kentucky fans will
just have to deal with it, much like Indiana did when Knight started
choking his players and throwing chairs on national TV.

All of that about KNIGHT....STUCK....nothing anyone has ever said about
Calipari has ever STUCK.  Maybe everyone is just a bit more jealous,
than they'll honestly admit...and Maybe it just don't matter!

We love Cal!!  GO BIG BLUE!!

Didn't Western Kentucky have a Final Four vacated - I think they finished 3rd (there was a consolation game back then) - when they had Jim McDanile?  Probably late '60's or early '70's?

I support all Kentucky schools. And as someone who always hopes they all do well, including UK, I just wanna say that your comment is hysterically funny! No sarcasm. Love it. I mean, is Jim Harrick the out and out sleaziest guy who ever coached? Anyway, I hope none of this enmity toward Cal--and I fault no one for feeling that way--trickles down onto the players. They're just talented guys who wanna play ball. And they're good kids.

lol.. parrish is a joke.. says hes not going to get in the middle of this. lol sounds like your against calipari. sounds like to me that your scared of bob knight. you know damn well hes a jack ass, bob knight doesn't think before he talks. His last years at indiana and years at texas tech were jokes. i never did like bob knight. hes always been a know it al loud mouth. everytime i hear him or dick vitale doing a game on espn i get heated. they both don't shut the f*ck up. i have to mute the damn tv. seems like all KNIGHT talks about is duke this and that. his favorite thing to do is pull up the play board and draw it up and show how duke runs it so good. anyone that watchs as much basketball as i do know its!  Bob knight is a racist loud mouth. his last years were crappy cause his own players couldn't stand to play for him cause all he did was yell at them and put them down and tell them how they couldn't get it done!

It shouldn't be all on Calipari. (I posted this earlier)

Knight is a joke.....why is he allowed to talk after the insane things he's done.....(he did go Latrell Spreewell on one of his players didn't he?)

...According to Knight..... Coach K - Shouldn't coach either (Maggette just like Camby) - Bill Self shouldn't coach (Darrell Arthur just like Rose) Roy Williams shouldn't have a whistle  (puts Kansas on probation with "Gifts") ....and John Wooden has no integrity (Sam Gilbert)

Calipari is no boy scout....but he has zero violations against him....and the theory that yeah but UMASS and Memphis lost their banners under his watch......true but .....Kansas, UCLA, and Duke  should have banners taken down as well....and it would be be under Self, Coach K and Wooden's watch.

REPORTERS should bring up these facts when referring to Calipari.......and mention that these type of things go on at all major schools and this is the enviroment that all coaches are in.

Question: Are Cal's UMASS and Memphis teams the only 2 to have Final 4 trips vacated, in the past 20 years? ever?

There very well might be others, but Michigan with the Fab Five and Minnesota when Bobby Jackson was there come to mind.  Both head coaches got the boot, but the infractions were a lot more serious.  Michigan actually had 2 or 3 seasons wiped off the books.  Actually, now that I think about it, the Fab Five years never happened.  Cool

You do realize that Pitino is doing a lot of the same things right? Hey, Pitino is no one trick pony.  He can do it all.  He even periodically purchases health care insurance for women.

I think eventually someone will slip up somewhere and we'll see strong evidence (i.e., like the USC/Reggie Bush story) that Worldwide Wes has been paying elite players' families and things will come crashing down Yeah, just like it all came crashing down on USC because that "strong evidence" (and I do agree with your assessment of it, btw)prompted such a quick, and firm, response by the NCAA.
