WVU collapsed, then showed Final Four is possible

West Virginia blew a 10-point lead with less than a minute remaining.

Then Devin Ebanks missed a desperation shot at the buzzer.

Then the game went to overtime.

And it was clear, at that point, that Seton Hall would win Saturday's Big East opener because that's just the way these things work. When a team storms back to force overtime, that team has momentum. Add to that the homecourt advantage, and the smart money had the Pirates finishing West Virginia in the extra five minutes just like Kansas stormed back, forced overtime and finished Memphis in the extra five minutes of the 2008 national title game.

Again, that's just the way these things work.

But a funny thing happened on the way to that Seton Hall upset.

West Virginia remained calm, quickly jumped to a five-point lead in OT and won 90-84.

It was a non-verbal version of "We got this."

National Player of the Year candidate Da'Sean Butler and Ebanks (his more-talented-but-less-reliable teammate) combined to score 10 of West Virginia's 13 points in overtime, meaning those two alone outscored Seton Hall in the extra period; Butler assisted on the other bucket, a 3-pointer by Kevin Jones. But the most impressive thing was how the Mountaineers stayed poised despite the fact that they'd just blown a seemingly insurmountable lead, despite the fact that they were on CBS, despite the fact that they were in a road game with a crowd cheering against them.

That's the toughness people talk about when people talk about West Virginia.

So, yes, the collapse was troubling; no way around that. But how West Virginia responded confirmed what a lot of us have thought for a while, that these Mountaineers are solid enough to take Bob Huggins to his second Final Four.

But Sparty choked in the BIG Game -SlickL

Didn't the sparties choke against NC.  Got smoked if memory served. And wasn't that last year, as in history.  Ancient history at that.  This is a new season and the mighty sparties are very good but not playing that great right now.  Maybe they will right their ship.  Nothing does that like playing a weak Big Ten slate.  And Mr. Izzo is a genius getting them to play at the right time.

Why don't we just agree to enjoy the next two months of BBall before we smack talk anymore.  By then WVU will be measured many times over.  Don't they play about 15 games against top25 teams this year?  That should do it.  Is it March yet?

WVU collapsed, then showed Final Four is possible

Whatever Big East Fans, when is your last national Title, Syaracuse in '03.  Michigan St. rolled Louisville and UConn last year.  Both Calhoun and Pitino were outcoached by Izzo, Louisville lost to Purdue in the Wooden game, MSU last year, Illinois in the FF in '05, Indiana in '02, Minnesota last year, the list goes on.

I would hope they would win considering you left out ALL 3 top ten Big East teams.  Sounds a bit like penis envy to me, and I go to an SEC school, so I know firsthand how you do playing out of conference, at least in football.

WVU collapsed, then showed Final Four is possible

WVU has one thing going for it right now and that is that nomatter what team shows up ofensively, they WILL play defense, and they will out-rebound  nearly everyone.  They are tough mentally and physically, and had Seton Hall not gotten hot from the three line, there never would have been an overtime, which WVU dominated by the way.  Purdue will be a test, but one I am anxious to see.  It won't mean the season, but will be a good litmus test.  Also at full strength, I would stack them up with about anyone.

Well they will get their chance against Ohio State and Purdue.  But remember, last year the less heralded Mountaineers flat out embarassed the mighty Buckeyes on their home court with the same players.  What is it with the Big Ten fans thinking they are God's gift to sports?  I guess it is the 1 bowl game they won last year and the fact that they have to boost up their own egos since the rest of the country knows that the conference is a joke.  All you have to do to look at the quality of talent in a conference is the draft.  Big Ten sure proves their lack of ability there.

Purdue isn't legit, and neither is WVU...right.  You're an idiot, and the next time you write something that is based on common sense will be the first.

WVU collapsed, then showed Final Four is possible

How did this go from "WVU shows Final Four is possible" to Big Ten (11) vs. Big East?  I agree with: WVU "toughness" & "calm", excited about: assist total. clutch FT's , OT win.  Wondering though what happened on the offensive boards?  And last, dad gum it, I'd really like to see Mazulla at 100%.

"All this talk bashing the Big Ten is absolutely absurd"...............really??? Yes, I know the "Big Ten" is the first conference EVERYONE thinks of when they think "great college basketball", but absurd???? How about you comparing to the Big East LY..........yes, the Big East didn't win it all(although that's happened many, many times in the past 2 decades), but they either had 3 or maybe even all 4 #1 seeds and most anybody who writes/comments on college basketball would say it was the BEST overall conference in a given year in history. Now, that is all subjective, but many have said it and for you to act like "challenging" the Big Ten is somehow crazy, then I would say you are a MoronCool

Slick Leonard...you are a joke!  The only Big Ten teams that could compete with (not beat) WVU right now are Purdue and Michigan State.  I expect to see a post from you after the Purdue game admitting that you have no clue about College Basketball after WVU beats them on Purdues home court, but I am sure we wont hear from you on this issue again after Jan 1.
