WVU collapsed, then showed Final Four is possible

West Virginia blew a 10-point lead with less than a minute remaining.

Then Devin Ebanks missed a desperation shot at the buzzer.

Then the game went to overtime.

And it was clear, at that point, that Seton Hall would win Saturday's Big East opener because that's just the way these things work. When a team storms back to force overtime, that team has momentum. Add to that the homecourt advantage, and the smart money had the Pirates finishing West Virginia in the extra five minutes just like Kansas stormed back, forced overtime and finished Memphis in the extra five minutes of the 2008 national title game.

Again, that's just the way these things work.

But a funny thing happened on the way to that Seton Hall upset.

West Virginia remained calm, quickly jumped to a five-point lead in OT and won 90-84.

It was a non-verbal version of "We got this."

National Player of the Year candidate Da'Sean Butler and Ebanks (his more-talented-but-less-reliable teammate) combined to score 10 of West Virginia's 13 points in overtime, meaning those two alone outscored Seton Hall in the extra period; Butler assisted on the other bucket, a 3-pointer by Kevin Jones. But the most impressive thing was how the Mountaineers stayed poised despite the fact that they'd just blown a seemingly insurmountable lead, despite the fact that they were on CBS, despite the fact that they were in a road game with a crowd cheering against them.

That's the toughness people talk about when people talk about West Virginia.

So, yes, the collapse was troubling; no way around that. But how West Virginia responded confirmed what a lot of us have thought for a while, that these Mountaineers are solid enough to take Bob Huggins to his second Final Four.

They got toughness in spades.  Ebanks and Butler are special.  They'll have a great season maybe even win the Big East but at some point not having a real pt guard is going to catch up with them.  If they had even an average pt they would be well equipped to go all the way .  With their dynamic duo and great team defense  they'll win alot but when they play teams with good guards ie.. Syracuse and UConn  their lack of depth in the backcourt will be exsposed.  Butler and Ebanks are fun to watch they create mismatches at their positions.  They had Butler handling the point and he's a 3!!!  That's amazing.  Huggins is a grrrreat coach and if those 2 keep growing their games they can be a Final 4 team.  I would just feel alot better if they had a point.  It's still early maybe someone will step up.

Just as everyone is saying "Parrish predicting a final four team is the dumbest thing ever..., etc, etc..." You guys should be eating your own words because you fire right back saying that they are NOT a legit final four team. That is just as bold of a prediction as what Parrish is making! It's all based on what you know, and what you know is that WVU is UNDEFEATED. They have played teams from the Big 12 and SEC.. both on the road and took care of business. I'm tired of reading about how "teams would have lost IF..." --- That is the dumbest thing someone would say. You say they would lose if Seton Hall makes free throws. Well, then WVU doesn't go to the line and miss two 1 and 1's and Seton Hall doesn't shoot 6 times in less than 45 seconds to tie the game. There are a ton of factors that lead to the way a game plays out. Seton Hall put THEMSELVES in position to where they HAD to do that or they didn't have a chance. Have you ever heard of the saying "it's all about wins and losses". Well WVU has 0 losses, zero. Stop hating for how they almost lost the game but praise them for having the poise and hardiness to stay under control and regroup and dominate over time. That is a sign of a very disciplined, well coached basketball team.

WVU collapsed, then showed Final Four is possible

I guess that is why WVU has beaten Ohio State for the last several years. The Big ten is good, but not as good as the big east.

Your statement about the big Ten having all the mentioned teams in the NCAA tourney is ridiculous!  The Big East does not have a team with a losing record thus far and I suspect that if the two conferences played each other head to head team against team the Big East would win the competition hands down while embarassing the Big Ten! At the top of the Big Ten you have 2-3 quality teams that could compete in the Big East on a regular basis.....after that the Big Ten would fold up under the competition. Wake up from your dream where everybody in the Big Ten is in the Sweet sixteen....Elite Eight....and Final Four......because it's a Fairy Tale!!!!! and you need to wake up and face reality!

All this talk bashing the Big Ten is absolutely absurd. Did you guys not watch Michigan State pummel through the Big Yeast last year. The Big Yeast has 16 teams compared to 11 in our conference, you idiots. Top to bottom last year and this year there is no question that the Big Ten is the best conference. Penn State won the NIT last year and we put on a great showing in the tourny. Expect Mich St in the elite 8, purdue in final four, wisco in elite 8, ohio state in sweet 16, minnesota in 32's, illinois to be a tourny team, northwestern tourny team and possibly could throw in Penn State and Michigan as picks to be a first round upset team possibly if they get hot during league play. The Big Yeast has Syracuse, West Virginia and a bunch of mediocre to lesser teams for the next few years. I would put you guys and the ACC as the best competition for us. Besides that no other conference could match our defense and intensity for 40 minutes at a time. The Pac 10 wouldn't be able to beat any team from our conferences its pathetic.
