Dear Gary (on Pitt)

Here's Monday's Dear Gary ...

Dear Gary: Your hatred for Pittsburgh is obvious. You are a joke!

-- Jason

Why would I hate Pitt?

Does that make any sense?

Jamie Dixon is one of the best guys in this business, his assistant Tom Herrion is fabulous, and the SID, Greg Hotchkiss, has always been terrific to me. There are lots of bad people in this sport, plenty of people to hate. But the guys at Pitt don't fall into that group. So I don't hate Pitt, and I don't know anybody who hates Pitt. I just thought it was crazy to rank Pitt back when that AP voter was ranking Pitt, because, you know, it was. And I used him to make the Poll Attacks interesting. And it worked. But you'd be wise to never confuse my opinions with my personal feelings, because they're rarely interchangeable.

As for ranking Pitt now, you can do it if you want.

I didn't.

But it could be done and I wouldn't argue.

Me?

I remain skeptical because, let's be honest, the Panthers still only have one good win. Of course, there are other ranked teams with only one good win, so that point can be easily countered. But either way, I think by late tonight we'll all agree on Pitt, one way or another. The Panthers play at Cincinnati tonight, and if they win everybody will have them ranked next week. If not, we'll see how things unfold. But I have no problem acknowledging that Pitt is better than I assumed and on the verge of any respectable ballot. I'm just not completely sold, but I'm interested to watch the Panthers going forward, and if I'm ultimately proved wrong, I'll gladly admit it.

Sounds like the scouting report on Aaron Gray to me.

The big and bad question mark on this Pitt team is McGhee. He is not quick, can't shoot from the floor, can't shoot free throws, and more often than not gets outrebounded by more aggressive players. Tayor better get better quick.

Dear Gary (on Pitt)

At the yearly Christmas Eve dinner, we sat around and predicted the number of wins Pitt would have in the Big East and it ranged from 10 to 4.  I'm one of the biggest Pitt fans out there and I was on the low end with 4 wins but with wins over Cincy and the Cuse, I am cautiosly optimistic that this team can make the big dance.  It's a long season, and the inside game has grown from terrible (Indiana game) to below average but if Taylor continues to improve to go with the outside play, this team could be a legitimate 20 win team.

Jamie Dixon deserves some major credit for this retooling project.

Dear Gary (on Pitt)

Nice!

I have, of course, always seen Jamie Dixon as one of the best guys in the business.  But that was as a Pitt fan and as a Pitt student for the beginning of Dixon's head coaching career.

So, it is nice to hear that said from someone who is NOT a Pitt fan or student, and who, you know, makes a living TALKING to people in the business.  It's one thing for a guy to talk up his favorite team's coach as classy.  It's another for a professional who knows what he's talking about to say so.

So thanks for making this Pitt fan feel pretty darn good about his program.
