Here's Tuesday's Dear Gary ...

Dear Gary: I'll give you a chance to redeem yourself. Where would you rank Pitt today?

Top 15?

I obviously can't run from the Panthers' any longer, and I've got a column about them coming later today. They're now 13-2 with only one bad loss (to Indiana at Madison Square Garden), and that one bad loss came while Gilbert Brown was ineligible and in Jermaine Dixon's first game back from foot surgery. Since then, Pitt has recorded wins at Syracuse and Cincinnati, meaning Jamie Dixon's team has two great wins -- the win over Wichita State looks OK, too, by the way -- and no losses with their full compliment of players.

That looks like a body of work worthy of a Top 15 ranking.

Just know that I can't update the Top 25 (and one) soon enough.

I'm liking this site more and more every time I come here.  A sports journalist that can admt when he's wrong.  You've gained much respect with me.  If this was ESPN they would come out with 50 articles to defend their position.  ;)

Gary don't worry, even I, a diehard Panther fan, was already preparing myself for an NIT postseason.  Pitt looked so bad in a couple of games this year including a 15-7 halftime score in one of their home non-conference games.  Dixon knows how to build a competitive Big East team year in and year out and we can no longer question his methods.

Good Man

I think you should be applauded that you admit a mistake.  I don't know that Pitt is a top 15 team yet but I couldn't understand why you thought that they were not a borderline top 25 team.  Your points were clear enough but the fact that they only had 1 bad loss at the time of your berating.

Hey Gary,

It's your buddy Navin. I know you've missed me. I don't know if you remember, but I'm a Panther faithful and I have to say that you are changing your tune much too quickly. I've watched every game this season (with the exception of the one or two that had absolutely no TV coverage at all) and I agreed with your Poll Attacks that assaulted that poor guy who had Pitt in the top 25 before the wins against Syracuse and Cincinnati. I agree that they should be ranked now, but I don't think we can confidently put them in the top 15 of any national poll.

The problem is that this team is too young and is going to suffer some seemingly-inexplicable defeats. It'll happen when this team runs into another team with solid defensive guards, because Pitt just cannot dominate anyone inside. McGhee is a very basic role player (and even less so lately), and while Taylor is gifted, he too is young and prone to defensive mistakes and foul trouble. Fortunately, our D has improved as the season has gone on and the addition of Dixon and Brown has made a significant difference on both the D and offensive sides. Can I point out that I'm shocked that we beat a veteran team like Wichita St. without those two? Sure, Gibbs can keep us in and winning games while he's shooting lights out - and Gil Brown can too if he plays like he did against Cinci - but without an inside preference we are going to be at our limits against certain teams that otherwise might seem like teams we should beat.

Nevertheless, I appreciate the pub my Panthers are getting, and as usual, keep up the mostly good work. Oh, and I like that there is an explanation about your tan up on your bio page at sportsline. Was that because of me? More importantly, is there ever going to be an explanation about your hair? Something like the following:

"Gary lost a bet with an 18-year-old Hollister model and so that is gelled straight up and appears to have blonde tips."

Way to go Gary. I knew you would come around one of these days. Go Pitt!  Schedule is brutal, but team is really jelling.
