Oregon State needs a government bailout

I told you before the season that the Pac-10 would stink, and I've reminded you -- because it's consistently reminded us -- pretty much every week since. Wednesday's games did nothing to alter my opinion. The preseason favorite, California, lost at home to a UCLA team with a losing record just four days after the Pac-10's only ranked school, Washington, lost at home to an Oregon team that 64 of the 65 AP voters omitted from their most recent ballots.

Again, it's just terrible.

Wednesday provided a new low point.

And it wasn't Cal's loss to UCLA.

It was Oregon State's 99-48 loss to Seattle.

That's Seattle as in the Seattle Redhawks, who entered with a 6-9 record featuring double-digit losses to Oklahoma State, Portland, Cal Poly, UC-Davis, Loyola-Marymount, and Harvard. Understand, it would be difficult to lose by 51 to Kansas or Texas or Kentucky, and maybe even the Celtics. So how the Beavers lost to a Seattle team without a conference -- seriously, Seattle isn't even in a conference -- is the latest sign that the second year of the Craig Robinson era isn't going well.

Oregon State is now 6-8 overall, 0-2 in the Pac-10.

If there's a cash-for-clunkers program in college hoops, President Obama's brother-in-law could sure use it.

Oregon State needs a government bailout

You can say all you want about Oregon State winning the CBI championship, but they got in with a 13-17 record, and you have to wonder if that was in large part because of who their coach is.

And for everyone who's too young to remember (or too stupid in Parrish's case), Oregon State has a very rich history of winning in basketball. They've been ranked #1 a fair few times over the years, although admittedly not recently, and they have the 15th most wins in college basketball all-time.

Oregon State needs a government bailout

I am a Washington State Fan, (Parish has given us a lot of love in recent years)  But what i can figure for the life of me is that with as many "Powerhouse programs" In the pac 10 struggling Gary decided to focus on Oregon State? I am fairly young and cant remember when OSU Has been good at basketball.. Gary Payton days?? Gary why dont you deceide to pick on the UCLA's and the Washington's instead of the Beavers who you knew were not gonna be any good anyways!!

Oregon State needs a government bailout

Okay, I'll admit I'm an Oregon State fan, but I really need to inject some reality into this conversation.

The loss to Seattle...completely unbelievable. Just flabbergasting. We lost to #17 Washington by 4 points just a week prior. No explanation.

But the point is this: Oregon State is not a terrible team. We won a postseason tournament (The CBI Championship) last year on a squad that had absolutely no talent and was pure heart--for example our biggest scorer was a "point-center" who's 6-11 but only like 190 pounds. This year, Robinson pulled in the 24th best recruiting class in the nation (4 four-star players, including two in the ESPN 150). We lost a grand total of one player (a non-starter) from last years squad.

But this team is struggling mightily to find it's identity. Robinson's facing a dilemna that is rare: If you have a team that fought extremely hard and was successful last season returning almost entirely intact, and four freshman, all of which have more talent that the rest combined, who starts? They have not really jelled. Although in fairness they did play down to the buzzer against Washington, and beat good Fresno State and Cal-State Bakersfield teams.

In addition, Robinson's wife was in a very high-risk labor in the four days preceding the game, and death was a distinct possibility. You can bet he was a little distracted by that, and the gameplan obviously suffered.

Oregon State needs a government bailout

This is a nice little blog.  HOWEVER, the "so and so team/player/coach/organization needs a government bailout" titles got old a LONG time ago.  These headlines were funny once or twice, but this is like the 5th month people have been using these titles.  Please think of something original.

Oregon State needs a government bailout

In 1982 Pac Ten champ Oregon State beat Big Sky champ Idaho in the West Region semifinals. Georgetown then beat the Beavers to advance to the final four. Maybe not in your lifetime but in mine the Pac Ten and the Big Sky dueled it out in the tourney.

It's because the Beavers just lost by 51 to Seattle . Oregon State would have trouble competing in the Big Sky, and when that's true of a Pac-10 team, that's embarrassing.
