The Poll Attacks

Purdue slipped from fourth to sixth in the latest rankings.

But don't worry, Boilermaker fans, I've got your back.

(Seriously, I've got your back on this.)

Let's Poll Attack!

AP poll: I learned my lesson about constantly picking on one voter when I focused three weeks of Poll Attacks on Roger Clarkson's decision to rank Pitt. As you know, Pitt has since proved to be awesome. Which made me look stupid (even though I was right at the time I was filing the Poll Attacks , but I digress). Anyway, I subsequently decided to spread the Poll Attacks around, be an equal opportunity basher of AP voters. And I'm telling you that because I know this is going to look like I'm targeting Gary Horowitz from Oregon again, but that really wasn't my intent.

Honest to God, all I did was look at the AP poll.

I saw somebody ranked Florida.

And I said, "Who the %$&# ranked Florida?"

Naturally, I looked.

And when I saw it was Gary Horowitz, I just shook my head.

Yes, the same guy who ranked Oregon last week ranked Florida this week, and this one might actually make less sense. Florida is 11-4 with two good wins (Michigan State on a neutral and Florida State at home), one reasonable loss (Syracuse on a neutral), one somewhat reasonable loss (at Vanderbilt), and two terrible losses (Richmond on a neutral and South Alabama at home). Beyond that, the Gators needed a 75-foot shot to beat N.C. State, and the loss to Vanderbilt just happened. So I'm not sure how that body of work is worthy of a Top 25 vote.

Is Florida terrible?

Absolutely not.

But there are plenty of teams not on Horowitz's ballot that should be considered before Florida.

Like Vanderbilt, for starters.

That said, I won't be surprised if Florida beats Kentucky Tuesday night.

Please, make note of that.

But that's Tuesday night, and this is Monday.

And it's difficult to justify ranking Florida on this Monday with that body of work.

(UPDATE: The worst part of this, I just noticed, is that Horowitz didn't rank Florida last week. So when the Gators were 11-3, he had them unranked. But when they dropped to 11-4 with a loss at Vanderbilt, he decided to rank them 24th. Again, Florida entered his ballot after a loss at Vanderbilt, and nothing else. Yes, that really happened. Yes, this is why I do the Poll Attacks .)

Coaches poll: I might never know how I got so crossed with Purdue fans, and I'm not sure they're ever going to understand me any more than I understand them on the subject of whether Purdue has the roster necessary to win a national title. At this point, I'm fine with agreeing to disagree because, honestly, I'm just tired.

But before I take a nap please allow me to -- ready for this? -- defend Purdue.

(Come back to me, Boilermaker fans!)

No way should Purdue have dropped from fourth to sixth in the Coaches poll for losing at Wisconsin.

Almost everybody loses at Wisconsin.

So why should the Boilermakers be punished for not winning at a place nearly everybody loses, particularly when you look at their entire body of work? To date, Purdue has wins over No. 9 West Virginia, No. 10 Tennessee, Wake Forest (receiving votes) and Minnesota (receiving votes). You know how many wins over Top 10 teams Villanova has? Zero. You know how many wins over Top 10 teams Syracuse has? Zero. And Villanova's one loss (at Temple) is clearly worse than Purdue's one loss (at Wisconsin), just like Syracuse's one lloss (at home to Pittsburgh) is clearly worse than Purdue's one loss (at Wisconsin).

And yet Villanova and Syracuse are ranked ahead of Purdue.

Makes no sense.

In all seriousness, you could make the case that, based on body of work, Purdue should actually be ranked ahead of Kansas, too. But I'm not about to start that debate. Like I said, I'm tired.

No top 10s for 'Cuse?

Syracuse beat UNC when they were ranked 4/6, Cal when they were 12/13, and Florida when they were 11/10.  Thats 2 top 10 W's and 3 top 15 W's.  Not their fault those teams fell apart and not their fault that the voters don't know how to vote.

Gary- the one thing I do agree on is Kentucky is #1. They are growing & learning & improving every game( now I know someone will write about the close call with Georgia & even maybe not putting Florida away after a 15 pt lead- but just read on)  Uk improvement from week to week is consistently the most dramatic- coming from a team in the top10- the sky is the limit- these fresman are so skilled & talented it is almost unbelieveable- but even our freshman have let downs during games- But WOW what a desire to WIN! Add that with All-American Patrick Patterson & it = National Championship! For you Coach Cal haters(I love you Bobby Knight- slap somebody else in the head) it is only going to get worse- by the way Knight(from Miami) will be a Wildcat next year- it will only continue. Will we run the table?- that will be extremely difficult- but with the talent, leadership & heart from top to bottom it is VERY possible!( Bobby's eyebrows just grew a few more inches) As far as the best team that has not always been  in the polls that is starting to come together- check out Vanderbilt- they have some awesome skilled players- but there coach(Stallons) is THE BIGGEST CRYBABY in coaching- might be a tremendous person- just watch him during a game- he even complains when the call goes his way! Gary sat there an imagine how COMPLETE this UK team will be by tournament time- it will be FUN & REWARDING!! How GREAT would this team be if they stayed in college for 3 or 4 years??  God Bless GO CATS!!!!

So, Gary, what do you think now?  Purdue blows a double digit lead at home to UNRANKED Ohio State...You still feel that they are better then both one loss Syracuse and Villanova.  Why dont you just crawl into a hole and keep your mouth shut until there is a National Champion crowned, then open your arrogant, dumbfounded mouth.  And then people will still be talking about you, because I'm sure whatever you say then will still make absolutely no sense...

The Poll Attacks

Whatever man, if your argument is that Purdue was a 4 seed last year then I am done with this argument.  I am not harping on last years bids- new year, new players, new teams, new coaches, new votes.  Sit down you homer- In my eyes MSU is the best team in the Big 10 with Leuer out for Wisco and I don't even think MSU is as good as they were last year.  I'm really not impressed with the games I have watched in the Big 10... seriously.  It's boring, sloppy basketball.  Please listen to me and go watch some other teams play: Kansas, Kentucky, Gonzaga, KSU, Temple, Texas, Cinci, L'ville, Cuse, Oregon, and even Cornell for christs sake.  Just because your favorite team is in the Big 10 doesn't mean that you should put it up as this almighty conference.  I'm done with you because all you seem to talk about is Purdue basketball and it is putting me to sleep.

The Poll Attacks

Wasn't talking about Nova until someone brought up the fact they had a weak schedule thus far.  Also not saying Nova won't lose- as I stated, and you agreed, the Big East is much deeper.  I was simply speaking to all you Purdue fans who drink the kool aid and think your Boilermakers are one of the elite teams in college bball right now.  As someone who watches a lot of games, I can name a handful of squads that would probably wipe the floor with your purdue squad- at the end of the day it doesn't mean jack because we won't find out until march.  It's fine that you are supportive of your team, but it seems like all you Big 10 fans do is look to your own conference and not the big picture.  I work with a Purdue grad and the other day he made the statement "Purdue is the best team in the country." I couldn't even argue with the kid because I was laughing so hard.  There isn't one kid on that squad that if I were an NBA Gm i'd think about drafting in the first two rounds.  And as for your comment about how there is no way they won't be anything lower than a number 3 seed barring a large collapse, I again differ in opinion.  I say at the most they get a 6 seed.  Please, please, please- go watch some games my friend.  Turner is a great player- but at the end of the day you can't lose conference games on your home court.  STOP DRINKING THE KOOL AID

Purdue was a 4 seed last year and this team is better with higher quality wins already. Point, Set, Match you set yourself up and I just knocked you out of the park with your own stupiditiy.

Peace out and watch out for those sharp objects!!

The Poll Attacks

Wow, even after you blow a 13 point lead at home, your still talking... I think this may prove that the boilermakers aren't a top 5 team- yes, losses happen, but you need to represent on your own court.  And with out Hummel's amazing shooting spree in the first half the game wouldn't have been close- you can't rely on a kid shooting 80% from three point range the entire night.  And guess what buddy- watched the whole game and am still watching Kentucky Florida- tryin to you know, brush up on my basketball.  Please go back to your buddies posting about how he's just happy to be ranked in the top 5 once in the season- some true fans you are.  Rankings don't mean a thing until conference tourny time and ncaa tourney time; and for that you should be happy because Purdue should drop down outa the top 10 after losing on their own court.  Who's standing and holding the bag now?  Only thing I was sayin is that you are biased to think the boilermakers are a top 5 team and they proved it tonight.  Thanks for lettin your boys prove my case- and now i "wash my hands" of you- PEACE

oh, and gary? you look like a fool now too.

Due, are you serious??? I have made like four post on here and you haven't read a single one of them. I'm biased sure, but I'm sure you are a little biased about your own Villinova team... aren't you??? Oh wait your a perfect fan and would never fall victim to this.

Who's holding the bag? What the heck are you even talking about now? Are you throwing up and one of your buddies is there holding for you?

P.S. If you would like to continue this match of wits just let me know and maybe we can create a seperate thread and I can give you directions on were to go!!!
