The Poll Attacks

Purdue slipped from fourth to sixth in the latest rankings.

But don't worry, Boilermaker fans, I've got your back.

(Seriously, I've got your back on this.)

Let's Poll Attack!

AP poll: I learned my lesson about constantly picking on one voter when I focused three weeks of Poll Attacks on Roger Clarkson's decision to rank Pitt. As you know, Pitt has since proved to be awesome. Which made me look stupid (even though I was right at the time I was filing the Poll Attacks , but I digress). Anyway, I subsequently decided to spread the Poll Attacks around, be an equal opportunity basher of AP voters. And I'm telling you that because I know this is going to look like I'm targeting Gary Horowitz from Oregon again, but that really wasn't my intent.

Honest to God, all I did was look at the AP poll.

I saw somebody ranked Florida.

And I said, "Who the %$&# ranked Florida?"

Naturally, I looked.

And when I saw it was Gary Horowitz, I just shook my head.

Yes, the same guy who ranked Oregon last week ranked Florida this week, and this one might actually make less sense. Florida is 11-4 with two good wins (Michigan State on a neutral and Florida State at home), one reasonable loss (Syracuse on a neutral), one somewhat reasonable loss (at Vanderbilt), and two terrible losses (Richmond on a neutral and South Alabama at home). Beyond that, the Gators needed a 75-foot shot to beat N.C. State, and the loss to Vanderbilt just happened. So I'm not sure how that body of work is worthy of a Top 25 vote.

Is Florida terrible?

Absolutely not.

But there are plenty of teams not on Horowitz's ballot that should be considered before Florida.

Like Vanderbilt, for starters.

That said, I won't be surprised if Florida beats Kentucky Tuesday night.

Please, make note of that.

But that's Tuesday night, and this is Monday.

And it's difficult to justify ranking Florida on this Monday with that body of work.

(UPDATE: The worst part of this, I just noticed, is that Horowitz didn't rank Florida last week. So when the Gators were 11-3, he had them unranked. But when they dropped to 11-4 with a loss at Vanderbilt, he decided to rank them 24th. Again, Florida entered his ballot after a loss at Vanderbilt, and nothing else. Yes, that really happened. Yes, this is why I do the Poll Attacks .)

Coaches poll: I might never know how I got so crossed with Purdue fans, and I'm not sure they're ever going to understand me any more than I understand them on the subject of whether Purdue has the roster necessary to win a national title. At this point, I'm fine with agreeing to disagree because, honestly, I'm just tired.

But before I take a nap please allow me to -- ready for this? -- defend Purdue.

(Come back to me, Boilermaker fans!)

No way should Purdue have dropped from fourth to sixth in the Coaches poll for losing at Wisconsin.

Almost everybody loses at Wisconsin.

So why should the Boilermakers be punished for not winning at a place nearly everybody loses, particularly when you look at their entire body of work? To date, Purdue has wins over No. 9 West Virginia, No. 10 Tennessee, Wake Forest (receiving votes) and Minnesota (receiving votes). You know how many wins over Top 10 teams Villanova has? Zero. You know how many wins over Top 10 teams Syracuse has? Zero. And Villanova's one loss (at Temple) is clearly worse than Purdue's one loss (at Wisconsin), just like Syracuse's one lloss (at home to Pittsburgh) is clearly worse than Purdue's one loss (at Wisconsin).

And yet Villanova and Syracuse are ranked ahead of Purdue.

Makes no sense.

In all seriousness, you could make the case that, based on body of work, Purdue should actually be ranked ahead of Kansas, too. But I'm not about to start that debate. Like I said, I'm tired.

The Poll Attacks

Wow, even after you blow a 13 point lead at home, your still talking... I think this may prove that the boilermakers aren't a top 5 team- yes, losses happen, but you need to represent on your own court.  And with out Hummel's amazing shooting spree in the first half the game wouldn't have been close- you can't rely on a kid shooting 80% from three point range the entire night.  And guess what buddy- watched the whole game and am still watching Kentucky Florida- tryin to you know, brush up on my basketball.  Please go back to your buddies posting about how he's just happy to be ranked in the top 5 once in the season- some true fans you are.  Rankings don't mean a thing until conference tourny time and ncaa tourney time; and for that you should be happy because Purdue should drop down outa the top 10 after losing on their own court.  Who's standing and holding the bag now?  Only thing I was sayin is that you are biased to think the boilermakers are a top 5 team and they proved it tonight.  Thanks for lettin your boys prove my case- and now i "wash my hands" of you- PEACE

oh, and gary? you look like a fool now too.

The Poll Attacks

Grizz,

Most definitely be proud of your team, that is what true fans are. While this loss is wierd, I looked at one of the guys I work with and said watch out for Ohio State in the second half.  Purdue looked like they were standing around waiting for Hummel and no one else had any rhythm.  All is all Purdue is still top 3 in the Big Ten and still is a contender to win the Big Ten title.  On the flip side, I'm now not looking forward to Wisconsin traveling to Ohio State at the end of the month with Leuer out and Turner healthy.  Major problems now.

Purdue=Elite 8 team but it does depend on the draw in the sweet 16.  I like the hard working nose to the grind stone team that they are.

I agree with everything you said. Turner is clearly back and OSU is certainly a top 20 team with him. The Big10 will be rough and tough every game, and each lose others will point out how weak we truly are, but what's the saying "In one ear and out the utter" hahaha.

And yes Purdue was stagnant on offense besides Hummel. I guess they were enjoying the show, but they looked horrible. The bench players especially Barlow hurt us tonight. Not to mention Turner only went off because Kramer was in foul trouble from the word go. I would love to see Kramer play the entire game on him and see if he puts up 30+. He might be able to do it with his talent, but I think not.

The draw is definitly important as well as seeding, and let's not forget upsets in early rounds. I personnaly can' wait. I don't care what Purdue's seed is as long as they are there. I honestly can't see it being worse then a 3 unless they collapse during the entire second half of the season.

Grizz, good luck from here on out.

Purdue live it up right now because you are going to be dropped further and lose your arguement a little bit now that you blew a 13 point lead at home and lose to Ohio State.  Still one of the best 4 or 5 teams in the big ten, but you gotta win that game at home if you are #4 in the nation.  You might have just lost your right to complain.

Hey Davfreitag,

It was a horrible lose tonight, I am still stunned, but give props to OSU. We just couldn't finish them off. Besides it being a bad lose at home this is still agaisnt a team who was ranked at full strength and only fell out of it because Turner was hurt. Clearly Turner is healthy. If Purdue only loses to teams named WIS, MSU, and OSU whether on the road or at home I will still be extremely proud of my team. Come tourny time every lose will mean experience and hopefully maturity for a deep run. Last year this same basic team made it to the Sweet 16, and we are better this year. Elite 8 or even the final 4 is an easy reach for us, and if this is not the year it's not the end. All of our main guys would be back excluding Kramer for the next season.

It will be a great rest of the season regardless of what happens.

Phlsfynst; could he possibly be the next Ejack???

Yet your main argument was that I don't watch any games... Do you really think Purdue is one of the top 5 teams in the country right now? honestly... and my point was that these rankings don't mean jack.  I have seen Purdue play and yes, I think they are a top 20 team but I am sick of you Boilmaker fans strutting your stuff when at the end of the day your boys prob will finish at the bottom of the top 20.  I was also stating that it's easier to have a great in-conference schedule when you play in the Big 10.  And your argument was that I don't watch basketball- well maybe you need to start watching some games outside your prestigious Big 10.  Go ahead, wash your hands- but your Boilermakers are bush-league and won't even make it to the sweet 16 this year- who are you pontious pilot or some 'ish?

Man you are more wishy washy then my washing machine. Guess what you keep changing your mind everytime you post something. First it has to do with Villinova, and then it's about how someone said the Big10 was as deep as the Big east which was never stated especially by me, and then you come back after I have matched your wits with blatant stupidity and desperation pucnhes.

Guess what Purdue just lost to Ohio State!!!! I know it, I watched, and yes I think Purdue is a top 5 team. Loses happens. I don't care if Purdue loses ten games this year since only the Tourny matters to me.

AND YOU ARE SICK OF BOILER FANS BEING PROUD OF OUR TEAM?!?!?!? Really you are tired of that? THis is the first year in a couple decades we have a reason to be proud, and yet every year BigEast fans march around the nation pounding their chest screaming "We are the best, we have 3 #1 seeds in the Tourny, Villinova wasn't a number 1 seed but could would win any league they play in besides the Big East. Guess what I just don't think you like the fact other fans are allowed to be proud of their teams. You are one of those who loves it when his team is given props and will complain when they are put down. But God forbid if the similar passioned fanbase does the same for their team. I mean it must be a crime. Well I promise you I will only say nice things about Villinova and never comment on any other team besides the Big East since they clearly are not deserving.

Grizz

P.S. Congrats Ohio State fans, you guys to a shot to the mouth from Hummel and fought back great for what will be a resume win on the raod come tourny time. I look forward to getting some revenge, and good luck.

The Poll Attacks

The polls are basically a popularity contest, that is all it is.  Of course a final four team last year should be higher than a team with little worse body of work so far this year.  Like last year equals success this year.  If that is the case why isn't North Carolina ranked #1 still.  I mean they won the title last year.  Ok a little over the top, but still.  I feel that when you play Wisconsin at home and lose it doesn't mean you are a bad team or anything.  It means you lost to a team that has only lost 10 times at home in 8 1/2 years.

The Poll Attacks

I'm one of the Purdue fans who ripped on Parrish after the "And Then There Were Three" article. If you're reading Gary, I'm over it. As was stated previously, I really think the timing of the article when no other articles had been written about Purdue was the fuel on our fires. I actually respect that you put yourself out here for everyone to agree or disagree with.

Where is his apology to the entire Tennessee team... A few weeks ago he was dogging them saying that they dont even deserve to be ranked. Of course his idiotic self is too self centered to mention that.
