The WCC schedule-makers must hate Gonzaga

Posted on: January 14, 2010 1:04 pm

There's an interesting West Coast Conference showdown (late) tonight between Gonzaga and Saint Mary's.

Can't wait to watch it.

But I can't figure out why Gonzaga is playing it.

Serious question: Has a league's dominant force ever been given less respect from the league schedule-makers than Gonzaga has received from the West Coast Conference schedule-makers this season?

I mean, the Zags could've used a break during the start of their league schedule considering they closed the preconference schedule with games against Oklahoma and at Illinois. Instead, Gonzaga is opening the WCC schedule with three straight road games. The first was last weekend at Portland, the team picked second in the official WCC preseason poll. The second is tonight at Saint Mary's, the team picked third in the official WCC preseason poll. The third is this weekend at San Diego, against Few's friend and former assistant Bill Grier.

Why would the WCC make Gonzaga travel for its first three league games?

Try to find another power within another league that has to do that.

Trust me, you never will.

Gary, look at what they did to Xavier this year.  I'm not complaining, but XU, after finishing up a brutual non-conference schedule with a double OT game at Wake, they then opened up their first two games on the road to give them 3 games in a week away from home.  And don't forget their stretch in February when they play at UMASS (okay not that bad) followed by at Dayton and then at the University of Florida, all in a 10 day stretch.  I like to think XU is the power of the A-10 since they've won 3 consecutive regular season championships.

Just a guess, but I think it has to do with the Memphis game.  Portland is the travel partner for the Zags in the WCC so they play each other mid-season with a home and home in a normal year.  With the Memphis game mid-season, I think the Portland go bumped up to the beginning of the season.  Zags may have requested that the away game get bumped so they could have a home game prior to the Tigers.  Again, just a guess.

Pittsburgh never has had the monopoly in the Big East that Gonzaga has in the WCC. (That's not saying Gonzaga's better, mind you, it's just saying the Big East has more parity)
