The Poll Attacks

Keep ranking Louisiana Tech, keeping getting Poll Attacked.

Fine with me.

My will is strong.

Let's do this!

AP poll: Remember last week when Nick Jezierny of The Idaho Statesmen ranked Louisiana Tech 20th and got Poll Attacked because Louisiana Tech, at the time, had a 17-2 record featuring no wins over teams good enough to earn at-large bids to the NCAA tournament and lopsided losses to New Mexico (lost by 29 points) and Arizona (lost by 16 points)? Of course, you remember. But what you might not know is that Louisiana Tech responded with an 87-76 loss to a San Jose State team that was 9-8.  After that, the Bulldogs edged Hawaii 65-60. So now Louisiana Tech is 18-3 with no wins over teams good enough to earn at-large bids to the NCAA tournament and lopsNCAA tournament teams and three embarrassing losses, and would you believe Nick ranked the Bulldogs again?

Swear to God, he ranked them again.

Nick was (and for good reason) the only AP voter ranking Louisiana Tech before the loss to San Jose State. That should've told him something, and I don't think he's stupid. So I'm chalking up Nick's continued support of f Louisiana Tech as an act of defiance, and I don't respond well to acts of defiance.

Drives me crazy.

To put how silly this is into perspective, let me tell you what Nick did with Baylor. Last week, he had Louisiana Tech and Baylor both ranked. Then Louisiana Tech lost by double-digits to San Jose State and beat Hawaii by five points while Baylor nearly upset Kansas at Kansas and smashed UMass 71-45.  So. naturally, Nick kept Louisiana Tech ranked and dropped Baylor off his ballot -- presumably because watching Baylor push Kansas and smash UMass proved the Bears were no longer worthy of being ranked on his ballot while Louisiana Tech's loss at San Jose State and win over Hawaii showed Nick ... honestly ... I have no idea.

Just so we're clear, there's nothing wrong with not ranking Baylor; I don't have the Bears ranked, either. But if I had them ranked last week, I sure as hell would have them ranked this week. And I don't care what week it is, I'd absolutely have them ranked above Louisiana Tech.

Coaches poll: Florida State is 15-4 with two wins over Georgia Tech while Georgia Tech is 14-5 with two losses to Florida State. So you'd think most would take that information and conclude that Florida State needs to be ahead of Georgia Tech, right? Well, not the coaches who vote in the Coaches poll, because they have Georgia Tech 22nd and Florida State unranked.

Unreal.

And Louisiana Tech got three points in the Coaches poll.

So, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go run my head into a wall.

Follow up your thought on Florida State.  Md has blown out Seminoles.  Lost overtime to Wake.  Lost by less than 10 to Villanova.  Blowing out everyone by more than 15 now.  See Miami game tonight.  Where are Terps?  Better be in polls after this week!!!

You personally take compliance seriously at UK? Then you alone bear the blame for hiring a coach who is so crooked he has to screw his socks off at night.

You rank Villanova and Kansas over Syracuse even though Syracuse has a better record than both and the highest RPI ranking in the country.  They have a very good defense, a number of offensive weapons, a strong bench, a hall of fame coach and great team chemistry.  Even Kentucky has a SOS of #85 so far.  All things being even, Gary...maybe you should run your head into a wall.

So arguing over which one is the best and who has played who (among these 4), and who is "ranked too high" doesnt matter. If Syracuse was the #1 seed but had to play all its first and second round games in Nevada or Seattle, OR....they could be a #2 seed and play all their games in New Jersey, which would you rather have??? Would you want the #1 seed so bad that it actually hurt your teams chances of advancement?

Correct. Several years ago, Kansas was a #1 seed, but we had to go play #2 seed UCLA in a California regional. In 08 when we won the National Championship and were again a #1 seed, we had to play the regional in Detroit. Regardless of what people want to think or how they rationalize it (certain team's fan bases travel better, so on), some teams are forced to win on the road during the tournament more then others. Teams like North Carolina, Duke, and UCLA rarely have to leave their state until the final four. This year with North Carolina and UCLA being down (but they have to be really down and still make the tournament, not just a little down), they would have to travel IF they would make the tournament, but i bet they would still play the first two rounds in their backyard. If Duke continues winning, I expect them, as usual, to play the first four rounds in their backyard. The rest of us who are doing well, can expect to play the first two rounds in our backyard and then go on the road for regionals. It's somewhat obvious to me that certain teams consistently get the path of least resistance to the final four.

I hate to break it to you, but until tournament time Body of Work has everything to do with rankings and seedings in March.  Therefore I think Syracuse probably has the best body of work.  Should they be ranked #1...I don't know.  But body of work wise it seems so (hence being #1 in RPI). Youre not breaking anything to me, I happen to understand the entire aspect of the way this works.  It doesnt matter if Syracuse has a better "body of work", theyre ranked #4, with an RPI #1, thus likely to get a #1 seed (if the season ended today), same as UK, Kansas and Villanova.

The NCAA does look at RPI, (so once again #1 Syracuse is just fine) and they look at keeping the top 2 seeds as regional as possible (even though they may deny this). Ever wonder why Duke or UNC always seem to play thier first 2 rounds in North Carolina??

Like I said WHEN, not if, UK loses then you can argue Syracuse, Kansas and Villanova should be ranked higher, but until then PLEASE stop with the "UK is ranked to high" crap. Because until we get to conference tournaments, all of this is going to change anyway. Rankings are just something to argue over at the water fountain, all the cream will rise to the top by end of March, and THEN body of work will mean something, but as of January 24th body of work means little to seeding in March.

I agree with the White Ninja 100%  The fact that Coach Cal is once again at the top, tells me that he is doing something right!  Whatever happened at UMass and Memphis is to me irrelevant right now and maybe time to quit using that as the reason KENTUCKY is #1.  I don't think he's done anything at Kentucky that's illegal--good post!!
Please people, give credit where it's due.

"So while "body of work" may settle things in your mind, it actually means nothing when these teams play each other. When start talkng "body of work", you must be a fan of the BCS bowl system."
