The Poll Attacks

Keep ranking Louisiana Tech, keeping getting Poll Attacked.

Fine with me.

My will is strong.

Let's do this!

AP poll: Remember last week when Nick Jezierny of The Idaho Statesmen ranked Louisiana Tech 20th and got Poll Attacked because Louisiana Tech, at the time, had a 17-2 record featuring no wins over teams good enough to earn at-large bids to the NCAA tournament and lopsided losses to New Mexico (lost by 29 points) and Arizona (lost by 16 points)? Of course, you remember. But what you might not know is that Louisiana Tech responded with an 87-76 loss to a San Jose State team that was 9-8.  After that, the Bulldogs edged Hawaii 65-60. So now Louisiana Tech is 18-3 with no wins over teams good enough to earn at-large bids to the NCAA tournament and lopsNCAA tournament teams and three embarrassing losses, and would you believe Nick ranked the Bulldogs again?

Swear to God, he ranked them again.

Nick was (and for good reason) the only AP voter ranking Louisiana Tech before the loss to San Jose State. That should've told him something, and I don't think he's stupid. So I'm chalking up Nick's continued support of f Louisiana Tech as an act of defiance, and I don't respond well to acts of defiance.

Drives me crazy.

To put how silly this is into perspective, let me tell you what Nick did with Baylor. Last week, he had Louisiana Tech and Baylor both ranked. Then Louisiana Tech lost by double-digits to San Jose State and beat Hawaii by five points while Baylor nearly upset Kansas at Kansas and smashed UMass 71-45.  So. naturally, Nick kept Louisiana Tech ranked and dropped Baylor off his ballot -- presumably because watching Baylor push Kansas and smash UMass proved the Bears were no longer worthy of being ranked on his ballot while Louisiana Tech's loss at San Jose State and win over Hawaii showed Nick ... honestly ... I have no idea.

Just so we're clear, there's nothing wrong with not ranking Baylor; I don't have the Bears ranked, either. But if I had them ranked last week, I sure as hell would have them ranked this week. And I don't care what week it is, I'd absolutely have them ranked above Louisiana Tech.

Coaches poll: Florida State is 15-4 with two wins over Georgia Tech while Georgia Tech is 14-5 with two losses to Florida State. So you'd think most would take that information and conclude that Florida State needs to be ahead of Georgia Tech, right? Well, not the coaches who vote in the Coaches poll, because they have Georgia Tech 22nd and Florida State unranked.

And Louisiana Tech got three points in the Coaches poll.

So, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go run my head into a wall.

So Nick, what was your reasoning then for ranking La. Tech ahead of Baylor? You have the "Boise State" mentality in that cupcake wins should count just as much as wins over quality teams.

The Poll Attacks

Who are you? I've never heard of "Poll Attacked" before this e-mail. By the way, I have no problem ranking an 18-3 Louisiana Tech team. I also considered every team you listed in the email you sent me, as well as Siena, Mississippi State and a few others. By the way, my paper's name is Idaho Statesman (with an a).

The Poll Attacks

Yes they have won every game, and it's not their fault UNC and Uconn have turned out to be weaker this year....however, they are yet to beat a team in your Top 25 (and one), do they really deserve #1.

Kansas is 1-1 against your top 26
Villanova is 2-1
Syracuse is 2-1
Texas is 2-1

now clearly Texas has one more loss outside of your top 26...but as much as Kentucky has Talent...they don't have the body of work yet, and it takes until Feb. 2 for them to meet a team in your top 26.
OK, I'll be the first one to agree that UKs schedule hasnt turned out to be as tough as it looked on paper this year. BUT, when UK played UConn they were ranked a top 10 team, when they played UNC they were a top 10 team and when they played Louisville they were just barely outside the top 25. Since those games UConn, UNC and UL have struggled. Is that UKs fault??

I'll agree "body of work" is important but RPI takes all things into account including who you've played and their records, and UKs RPI #7. So while their schedule is not that good, they are the ONLY undefeated team in the country. So until they lose, Im sorry to tell you they are the UNDISPUTED #1 team in the country. WHEN (not if) they lose then you can place them among the 1 loss, then 2 loss teams, and rank them accordingly.

As far as having to wait until Feb 2 to play a top 26 team, what if UK beats Vandy, Ole Miss, and Tennessee?? That would likely move Vandy from just outside the top25, and Ole Miss may drop out as well. And what if Tennessee then losses another game or two before the year is up?? will that again prove to you that UKs schedule and body of work are undeserving??

The SEC is the #4 ranked conference according to RPI, just above the afor mentioned, "tough" Big Ten (#5). So although the SEC only has 4 ranked teams (same as Big 10 and Big 12), the rest of the league is as competitive as all the others (with exception of Big East), as proven by the conference RPI.

So if Kansas sweeps the Big 12, meaning beating Texas and Kansas St (twice) then if you want to put them over UK... OK, WHO CARES??

The top 4 teams get a #1 seed in the tourny, and until Kansas, or Syracuse, or Texas, or anybody else knocks UK off in the Big Dance, then exactly what does "body of work" mean. The Big East is the toughest conference, meaning the winner of the conference likely has the best "body of work", but when is the last time a Big East team won it all?? (2003 and 2004, and neither were the favorite to win it), but that trully was before the Big East was the be all end all conference. In the last 5 years (when the Big east flexed its conference muscle) weve had UNC twice, Florida twice and Kansas.

So while "body of work" may settle things in your mind, it actually means nothing when these teams play each other. When start talkng "body of work", you must be a fan of the BCS bowl system.

show me your evidence of stop blabbing your big mouth.  only one team wins every year, and Coach Cal put his teams in a position to win it each time.  However, to call him cheater and chocker is really going out of line.   How can you have a reputation of 10 and IQ of 0??
